Title: California Public Hogs?
Post by: Bear Heart on January 03, 2009, 09:27:00 PM
Are there Hogs on public land in California?  I am stationed here in Washington state and want to do some hog hunting.  Thinking a drive down to California might be my cheapest bet.   How much am I looking at in fees.

Check out Fort Hunter Ligget. I know they have some hogs running around on there.

When I was stationed at 29 palms I went to an airforce base up north that was next to a federal prison, some where around San Luis Obisbo.  If I remember right it was $7 for a book of 5 tags.  They also let us camp on base for free.  It was great, we also did some quail hunting while there.

Hey there...
Lake Sonoma in Sonoma County has hogs. Season is open until mid April. It gets heavy pressure but there are hogs.

There is a campground at the lake called Liberty Glen with trailer hookups. It is run by the Army Corps of Engineers.

Fort Hunter Liggett is a good destination as well it's just a lot further South than Lake Sonoma. Fees for the lake would be minimal if you camp there; registering to hunt at the lake is free. Non res license is about $135 and a non res pig tag is about $65.

PM me if you want to try Lake Sonoma. I live about an hour down the 101 from there and I'll hunt with you if the timing works out.

I read some where that only like 3% or something of the hogs harvested in Ca. come off public land. It might been as high as 10% but it was a real low number.

Mamba is talking about Vandenberg Air Force base in Lompoc Ca.
Not sure what it costs, but service people can hunt it, and it has hogs for sure.

This is the kind of info I was looking for.  The less south the better for me as that is time and gas. ( read money)

Your right Kurt it was Lompoc.  I was there about 14 years ago so the rules and rates may have changed but it is worth looking into.  You could also look into hunting Jacks in the desert, there is nothing but BLM land and all we did was pull off the road and hunt.  No shortage of jack rabbits, and contrary to what everyone else says they tasted fine to me.

Yeah, the price has changed since then Pete. Pig tags went from 7.50 for a book of 5 to 18.65 each today. I'm sure there are still pigs though!
