Title: How far do you travel?
Post by: bowless on January 01, 2009, 11:39:00 AM
Just curious how far on average everyone travels on the average outing.  I'm only going about 25 miles from home on average but that has to change.

200 plus miles round trip to the cabin, and during deer season it may be every other weekend.  Other than that there is state land within 10-20 miles that I visit when I can.

Guess I'm one of the lucky ones... I can be hunting about 100 yards from my house, or I can drive 1/4 mile to open a gate.

I live and work in NYC. But I have a second home 130 miles away in the Catskill Mountains. Once there, hunting is right out the back door.

I drive 180 miles round trip to hunt for the afternoon. Drove 275 miles round trip to hunt an area for the day Yesterday. I've one spot that is a bout 20 miles from the house, but I don't enjoy hunting there. You guys with places to hunt close to home are lucky.

I can hunt out my back door...thirty steps to the woods and onto the ridge.  I also have twenty-thousand acres of gamelands within just miles of my house.  Love rural living.

Then when i hunt close to home i just jump on my 4 wheeler an hunt on the farm that i live on. This is a basic yr in the woods for me,  the destinations change yearly

The nearest place to me for both deer and elk is about 40-50 miles round trip. For spring bear season about 6,000 miles round trip.I think the travel can become part of the adventure.Pending the airline don't lose your bow.bd

40 miles round trip to the military reservation I hunt.  Usually, get 8-9 half day hunts and 1-2 full day hunts per year.  Buddy has a lease 45 minute drive I get to go a couple times per year for hogs.
Grew-up in PA hunting the mountain 1/2 mile behind the house.  I really miss that.

Bou are 800 miles one way. We stay a week.  Sheep are about 650.  Then I fly down and in MT its about 100 miles.  We stay for a few days minimum.  SD involves about 450 to get there and then about 20 miles each way to hunt.  For MN hunt w/mom, its 900 miles each way and we stay at the shack.  She shot two within 150 yards of the shack (87 years young).

10 min. to 60 min. depends on my mood and how many deer I think I might see. After this year I think that I'm going to have to go alot farther from home to see game. Maybe set aside time for trip somewhere.

With all the developement around here the last several years and pockets full of doe tags my favorite area has been cleaned out pretty good.  Never see anything anymore.  We have lots of public land, it'll just mean more time on the road next year to get there.

Depending on the area I want to hunt for the weekend 65 miles one way to 195 miles one way.
I'm in the woods every weekend during deer season and at least 2 solid weeks every year.

Walked from the house and killed 2 deer this year on a very small tract of private land that gets pounded by my neighbors gun. Probably 100 yards at the most.10,000 acres of very good public land for deer 16 miles away,9,000 acres of public land where I kill a lots of hogs is 30 miles away. 5,000 acres of land with exceptional deer and hogs is 20 miles away and several other tracts totaling around 500,000 acres less than 60 miles. All public land and all with plenty of critters.

My four 'local' hunting spots are about 16, 17, 23 and 30 mile drives one-way.  Make that round-trips, and consider that I hunt an average of 80 times most years, that's a lot of time driving.

Roundtrip to my usual deer and turkey hunting camp here in Oklahoma is 300 miles. Roundtrip to my "usual" hunting camp in Zimbabwe, where I will be again in July, is 21,000 miles. Needless to say, I don't get to make the trip to Zimbabwe nearly as often as the trip to my hunting camp in Oklahoma. It's a long swim!    :D

I usually hunt public land 35 miles away but it is on a river system that gets flooded intentionally for ducks.  Once it floods you can't hunt deer there so I have to travel 70 miles to my next favorite public land.

There are closer public tracs but they tend to have too many people.

From the timber out back and 20 miles early season. Then around 100 miles round trip in Jan. It's the only zone open in our state.

About 100 miles to my Aunt's. I'm her favorite, so I get exclusive rights to her 50 acres. She has hay fields and it is surrounded by other agricultural fields. Deer taste just like beef.

From about 50 yards out the back door on my 84 acres to rarely 25 miles.  Many thousands of acres of public land around here but I hunt mostly at home.

I can usually get it done within 50 miles of my doorstep.  Elk, deer, antelope.  Would like to try some whitetail hunting in the midwest and hog hunting down south.  But, I've got it pretty good right here.  My only real complaint to Wyo bow hunting is that the seasons are unreasonably short compared to the rest of the country.

90 miles from my new home to my old hunting land.
I have access to land about 10 miles away, also. But that gets hunted pretty hard during gun season.

I envy you guys that have close spots, that's what I used to have in TN and miss it a lot!

Now I drive about 75-100 miles each way to hunt decent WMA's, same for the lease that I was in last year near Sheridan AR.  Not too much hunting available nearby.
