Title: Don't Forget Our New Years Eve Shot
Post by: ber643 on December 31, 2008, 04:54:00 PM
Yep, A lot of archers/bowhunters over the last  five or more years have taken to firing an arrow (into the future) to help welcome in the New Year, at midnight on New Years Eve. I think as many need to do it tonight as can, to help carry us into and through this upcoming year. Let's do everything we can to help make it better than it might be.
Do it in whatever manner you wish, in a target and retrievable, a burning one (into water hopefully), an arrow up, up, and away - LOL - involve the family if you can.

Pics would be nice (especially Full Draws -   ;)  ) but just git-r-done in any case. The very happiest, safest, healthiest, possible New Year, 2009 to each and every one of you.

Have to wait 'til tomorrow. Don't wanna put something up in this 50mph wind, and besides, I live on the highway.
:scared:

Bernie, I hope midnight abolishes all pain and worry, and the dawn brings you warmth and comfort to last all of the New Year, and beyond.

Bless you all for joining in - it really is fun - though it is windy and cold here tonight also.

Killie, thank you so much for your very special New Years wish. May you and Clark have many, many years of your own lasting happiness.

Twosheds, I think I'll avoid the gasline but I am going to experiment with some WD-40 and rags here in a bit!

Just shot thirteen braodhead tipped arrows in the last hour of light.  Plan to do 13 more at first light tommorrow.  I live in San Antonio TX and shooting one into the night might not be the best plan.

what might be neat is to tape one of those chemical light sticks to your arrow. Wish I had some of those  :(

I just wrapped 12 inches or so of cloth 2 inches wide to the shaft and tied down with twine and soaked it with WD-40. The first one didn't do so well I didn't let it burn long enough. The second attempt I let it burn for 40 seconds or so before shooting it worked perfect. It even burned on the ground out in the pasture for 10 minutes after landing! I'll be sending the next one up real high at midnight!

Hope to be home from work in time to keep the tradition. Been doing it since it was first mentioned on another forum.

I don't shoot it into the air. I shoot at my target.

One of the European archers (earlier over there) Soaked a sock in gasoline - got some great pics. Enjoyed it so he tried it a few times - said it worked well. Careful though - the high wind here and the resultig tinder box conditions could make it tricky this year - if not over water.

Regular lighter fluid does the trick or glow sticks work too

I'll shoot an arrow at midnight. Sounds like a great idea. If you don't mind, though, I'll pass on the flaming arrow thing. I'm not sure that my neighbors would understand.  :D

Great idea -- shooting a wishful dream arrow into the future.  Iam stringing the bow right now.  Best wishes to all in the coming year.

Sooooooooo glad to see (and read) so many reports of participation (with or w/o pics) and such heartfelt wishes for fellow archers and fellowman. Love the Message on your coat, 4rnr.

I will be saving FD pics and when I get them all gathered from different forums, they will appear in my Traditional Bows Drawn Pages (Page 19).

I didn't, 'til I went back and checked, Kenny. Some of the Carbons I put up, that you got recently in the fundraising effort for young archers - looking good, buddy! Adam will also make the FD new years gallery on my traditional Bows Drawn pages - we sometimes find it hard to catch kids at actual FD in the heat of the moment - LOL.

metsastaja, the video of the glow lit arrows flying was real neat - music and all. I have got to sit down and figure out how to use and post my video capabilities - soon. I have a video camera (that I used to pull stills from - but it was not easy) and a still that takes video clips, both digital. Plus my new puter has the bells and whistles that should be easier than the older ones I had.

ber643 thanks for the compliments..using video started when I switched from a compound to a recurve and longbows in March of 08. I needed a way to watch myself shoot and adjust and critic my own form. I now video short portions of my hunts, practice in the back yard etc. It is amazing what a video can catch that the human eye misses.

Here is a non traditional target practice.

HAPPY NEW YEARS to ALL

Some good shooting in that video, Les, and great visuals. I did a little videoing when I first switched over also (with my wife's help) for the same reason - in fact I think one is still in the archives.

Good pics of you and your friend, Matty, and the fire arrows, Bobby. They'll look good in my FD pages too.

Did not get a pic, but my husband and I each sent an arrow into the sky at midnight with our Kotas.
My little man wanted to stay up sooo bad.  He bit the dust at 11:15pm.  Will have to send his little arrow up today.
Can't wait to get outside and see if my arrow or my husbands made it further!

Awsome everybody!!! I wanted to do this last night but my husband had planned a bowling party. I got some nutter/bunny arrows put together today and a new D97 string on my sons bow and plan to launch a flaming arrow when my daughter gets back from hang'n with her freinds.

It was after dark when I tried out my new arrow and string combo, but it seemed to fly pretty good.

Will take pic too!

Y'all have done good. I'm beginning to transfer and post pics to my pages but i will keep checking back for more pics coming in. I'll save a few spots for them among the New years Shot spread, as I already have a few others to post following them. At this point I'll be adding about 13, plus those still coming in here.
