Title: Visited a local archery store.......
Post by: DngrsDan on December 31, 2008, 04:06:00 PM
It's been about 25, or more, years since I bent a bow (where HAS the time gone?)and have been looking to get back into it. My last bow was a Jenning's compound, but I've always been more drawn to a traditional bow. For whatever deep rooted reason more specifically the longbow. Have made up my mind to get the Great Plains T/D longbow as soon as I can get the $'s together for it.
Anyway....stopped into the LAS to get back into the "atmosphere" again and to see what they had.

Wasn't a recurve or longbow in sight. With all the pulleys, cams, and cables I saw I could have moved a house! A very LARGE house!

The owner let me fire one of his bows that was all set up with sights, fall away arrow rest, and a mechanical release.
When I shot the Jennings I did not use sights, releases, etc., other than it being a compound bow I shot bare bow with finger release.
I was so overwhelmed with all the distractions it was amazing I was even able to hit the target. It was hard for me to figure out where to point the arrow to make it hit where I wanted it to. To be fair I would imagine if I used that bow long enough I would get used to it, but that style of bow just doesn't feel like "archery" to me. Too many moving parts.

I just joined this site a few days ago and have been reading through different topics. It looks like I have found a site that I share the feelings for "traditional" style of archery with. Been getting a lot of good info and insights from you all.

DngrsDan, welcome to the campfire.  I know what you mean about the compound bows compared to "Traditional" gear.  I was going to join our local winter archery league and was talking with one of the guys about it.  He started talking about electronic releases and fall away arrow rest and such.  He completely lost me.  I used to shoot a compound bow, still have it, but I really enjoy the simplicity to the longbow and recurve.  Fortunately, the Traditional crowd shoots on a seperate night and thats where I'll be.  Have a safe and Happy New Year.

Welcome Dan,   :wavey:   that's my sentiments exactly.  I started out shooting trad when I was ten, upgraded (or is it downgraded) to co...commm....mechanized carbon/aluminum tube launchers for a while, and then regained my senses about eight years ago.

I got tired of all the new 'must have' doo-dads, gimmicks, and gee-gaws, plus the physical weight of the darned thing     .  I always .shot fingers because I flat refused to put a trigger on a bow.

Just a word of caution...you will read through these forums and be drawn into the urge to start building bows, arrows, knapping flint, making quivers..........it's an addiction.

Hi, I'm Dennis and I'm a trad-aholic.

Welcome to the forum.

Compounds have their place.I love them and shoot them as well as my trad gear(which is what I started on). It's pretty easy to be overwelmed by them now adays what with the drop away carbon cam and a half who ha.

Welcome to the fold. I know what you mean about the compound bow do-dads. You can invest the cost of a decent used bow (maybe a new one) in the stuff they hang from those things. The trigger deal is just plain scary if you ask me. I like to be a part of the shot. I tried out a compound and felt more like a spectator. Traditional, especially longbows, IS archery to me. Nothing against those who shoot compounds. It is just not my thing, something I share in common with the good folks on this site.

Pull up a chair and start learning. Hardly a day goes by I don't learn something from Tradgang. Some days I even do some teaching, but I enjoy the learning part the most.

Welcome to the gang!

Wow....guys you're a great group of people.
I didn't really expect the responses I've gotten.
Here I am a complete stranger and non-typical offered to loan me a bow until I get my own. That truly touched me. Thank you.

And Tom D...yes, I would be interested in the Festival.

For my fellow Missourians I'm located in West Plains.

Thanks you all for your welcomes. Glad that I have found your site.

Dan

Welcome back to yourself and your natural instincts--just feels so right, doesn't it? Your DNA has been calling you, has it not? You're really going to cherish the company of all those who have also answered the call. Man, I just know this is going to be a great year for you. May the Spirit always be with you!
