i know its early to start talking turkey hunting but i have been looking for public hunting land to hunt turkeys on in kansas but with no luck. really not tring to pay a big fee for an outfitter so im looking for public lands and a do it yourself turkey hunt. any help in pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. thanks trey edwards
Look into Fort Riley. It is open to the public and has a ton of turkey on it.
Get a WIHA (Walk-In-Hunting-Area) atlas from KDWP.

Numerous Corps lakes with land managed by KDWP surrounding them offer excellent turkey hunting.

Also check out Mined Lands area around Pittsburg....
Almost every lake in the state of Kansas has some hunting ground around it.
Are You looking to hunt Eastern's or Rio's?
What Dennis said, there is tons of WIHA land to be hunted thats full of long beards and big bucks. Central kansas seems not to get the fame to be a hot spot as much as other parts of the state so there should be less hunting pressure. Good luck
When are you wanting to come to Kansas? Tripper
So many turkey's around you shouldn't have any problems at all. Most public land hunting spot's around here have plenty, What part of Kansas have you been looking at :archer:

Had four turkeys within 10 yards of me this afternoon. Trouble was they were on the other side of the big Cottonwood log I was using for a blind.

k.s. trapper, thats a good question not familar with kansas and where the public lands are. im waiting righ now for a atlas their sending me.
There is never a shortage of turkey's here. I agree with the Walk-in that everyone has been talking about. I spent some time on walk-in this year chasing mulies and saw a bunch of turkeys. I never saw another hunter. Tripper
As someone said, most of the resivors in this state have public hunting on them. To narrow it down we need to know what part of Kansas you are planning on hunting. Middle to eastern Kansas you will see more Eastern turkeys. Central Kansas is full of Rio's. Kansas doesn't have very much public land but they are getting better with the walk-in programs. Glenn
I figured I would get in on this thread. My wife is from Lawrence and we just returned from Christmas vacation there. We were thinking of returning in the spring and I want to try and arrow a turkey. I have access to some land but was wondering what else might be possible around there.
going for rios. thanks for all of the information.
well i have been looking at section 1 and at some of the federal wildlife areas. anybody done any good at them?
Do you mean unit 1, I hunted mule deer out there many times but I can't say that I have seen that many turkey's. There's a lot of walk in out there also.
It's all easterns around here, I don't think there are any true Rio's anyway. They do cross breed just like the deer.
Tracy
yeah unit 1 sorry about that. seems like there would be room to roam with that many areas to choose from. is there any merriams in kansas or just rios and easterns
