Title: Legal min draw wt NM elk
Post by: BRONZ on December 25, 2008, 02:39:00 PM
:help:    I need to know what the minimum legal draw weight is for elk hunting in New Mexico, please.  I have searched the NM dept of fish/game; and, what it reads is, "any bows and arrows..."  It does not specify a minimum as far as I can see.

I am not looking for recommendations on elk hunting draw weight, just facts.  Thanks all!

I do not now about NM .I was able to kill a bull last year here in MT 5x5 I used a 54# morrison shawnee dakota with a 4 blade 125 gr stinger head
475 gr arrow weight. was almost a complete pass through. I find that with a little less weight i draw about an inch more --29"     for next season im going to try to set myself up for about 50 or 51 pounds at 29"  the best advice that i could give you is to spend alot of time out stump shooting with a judo point that realy helped me i shot my bull at 35 yds a couple of years ago i would of not even taken a shot.

Manolito, the facts are, you should shot as heavy a bow as you can accurately, this is not fishing, where we are trying to use the lightest tackle we can.

Facts are, Elk are big and strong,IMHO

Here's the Utah info!

Your bow must have a minimum pull of 40 • pounds at the draw or the peak, whichever comes first.
Your arrowheads must have two or more • sharp-cutting edges that cannot pass through a 7/8 inch ring. If you're using expanding arrowheads, the arrowheads must have two or more sharp-cutting edges that cannot pass through a 7/8 inch ring when expanded.
Your arrows must be at least 20 inches
• long, from the tip of the arrowhead to the tip of the nock, and must weigh at least
300 grains.

Or you can call or email the NM F&G!

All I could find was "Any bow and arrows" under the legal firearm section; Elk chapter. --Same as you.

Perhaps they don't have a min draw weight? Sorry, I know you wanted facts only but if you find out let us know please. Thanks.

There is no "minimum" draw weight in NM. Any bow that's not a "crossbow".....O.L.

Thanks for the info fellas!  Looks like you all found the same info I did.

Kingwouldbe, that's a great bull!  I'd post mine, but there's a wheelie bow in the pic! (Started with recurve when I was 14.  Switched back to trad two years ago.  Don't plan on putting the training wheels back on).
