At the Trad Shop yesterday and we got to talking. Your dreams, thoughts, plans and preperation all came together. You got one on the ground. Take only a couple of photos because your in a hurry. Take a gander at your watch too I bet. Gotta break the time worp also in dressing out your critter. Why? One extra hour isn't going to spoil the meat in most situations and you aren't going to cut yourself like I do every darn time. Hurry up type faster. :biglaugh:

I heard that. After all these years I still don't take good pictures and I HATE myself afterwards.
This years Iowa buck was taken on the run at 16 yards. Nice buck, although not what you go to Iowa for, and a good shot. I'm happy with the him, but since I didn't take a few minutes to snap some pics. This is all I have of him.

I think in Weasels article he recommends taking something like 30 or 40 pics, especially if you're using digital. wish I had learned from...but of course the last deer I shot back in november I only took (my bro working the camera) 4 of 5 shots....didn't realize til I got home that there are shadows spoiling the shot....

It's easy to revert back to the daily rush of society. Free time is hard to come by, especially when our families, work, friends, and other obligations have made the sacrifice to let us go.

I usually will light a cigar for too reasons, 1. I like them and I'm celebrating, 2. they slow me down, I will light one and just sit back and look at it, I want to enjoy every second, totally immersing my self in the moment.

If you don't like cigars, I also keep a journal with me, and I will sit down and start to right as I keep glancing at the animal.
Some times I will be there for hours messing around, it's to much of my life to rush through it.

Im with King, If I kill a nice animal I usually take some pics, get the guts out, and sit back and have a nice stoggie or my pipe. Very relaxing, one of my favorite parts about the hunt (except watching the arrow go perfectly into the ribs ;) )

That a great point, one I hadn't considered before.
I'm not big on trophy photos. Probably because I'm not big on "trophy hunting". Most my hunting is done for the equal parts of 1) Being outside and 'wasting' time without actually wasting time...I think some people call that relaxing 2) Meat.
It's not happened yet but I'm a guy who would just assume shoot the 180# doe that's standing right next to the 12 point buck. (By "not happened" I mean I've yet to have both a "big" doe and a "big" buck presenting shots at the same time)
Sooo....there's some rush out of concern for the meat, which you pointed out is an unfounded reason. Don't take many pics eithers and since I hunt alone my options are either get to work or sit there and stare at the carcass. :eek: :D
I'm going to try and pace myself a little next time. I think the "meat" mentality and non-social nature of my hunting are the roots to why I'm "always in a hurry".

I'm with kingwouldbe on this one, I roll a cig after putting a pinch in the lip of my fallen quarry and enjoy the moment. Let the adrenalin burn off a little and think about photos. Then take some memory shots and finally get the gutting done.

sometime when its warm out and im feeling lucky i stick a can of beer in my pack under my hydration bag keeps it nice and cool. if iv had a hard days hunting or if i kill something ill sit down and drink it reflecting on the animal and the hunt a bit like King with his cigar when im out in the wild by myself rather than rush back to camp. sometimes i like to start a fire and cook the heart or liver if im hungry or it getting late.
the nice thing with digital cameras these days is you can have a good look at everything to make sure its good before you take to field dressing it.

That is so true. Those are great pictures guys. I always keep a tripod in the truck so I can take my own pictures. Only problem is when I start think of poses for my animal before I get it on the ground. I am going to force myself to slow down from now and enjoy the moment a little more.

I alway's try to take several photo's from different angle's. Also make sure I get as much of the scenery in the photo as possible. It's sure nice to sit back in the recliner with a hot cup of coffee after the season has passed and relive past hunts through your photo's.

I hear you. I have to make myself slow down and enjoy the moment...I also have to deal with 100 degree heat during my deer season. There is a beer in the cooler to toast the event, pictures to take, and the moment to relive.

I was just talking to one of my buds the other day about this very subject. It seems that right after a kill you go into hyperdrive or something. After all of the prep and practice you would think that the "peaceful easy feeling" would just overcome and it would be no problem to chillax for a while. When I killed the deer that is in the hilights page, I waited about five minutes after seeing him fall before I got down. There is absolutely nothing in this world that can come close to the feeling of walking up to your downed animal as most of you know. So I walk up to the biggest 8 pt. that I had ever seen, sat down beside him, looked him over and immediately started planning on pulling my stand, dragging, etc...... I know that it was because I was so excited, but as I was going to start my chores, for some reason I felt that I could not leave the deer just yet. So I had to make myself slow way, way, way down! Boy am I glad that I did that. It was almost surreal, being in the moment, not letting it pass so easily. Sat beside the deer for at least thirty minutes before finally starting my chores. I have vowed that I will drop er down a gear or two after the kill from now on.
