Title: Measuring Brace Height
Post by: Ssamac on December 19, 2008, 09:53:00 PM
Using the square, do you measure the brace from the string to the back of the bow or from the string to the middle of the shelf? Or if the shelf is crowned, do you measure to the high spot? My bows have a rather wide shelf so I always feel like I'm not being very precise. I would imagine one or the other method would produce the same effect if consistent, but in the case of my bows, it could be off by an inch or better depending on how I measure.

Thanks
sam

I always use the distance from the string to the deepest part of the grip.  That is how I learned and have taught Boy Scouts.  Try this link, it has a good explanation.

Let me add to that.  When he says the deepest part of the grip.... he is talking about the throat of the grip where the web of your hand [between thumb and forefinger] comes in contact with the grip.

Hope that helps, Gene

Just an additional note:  the deepest part of the grip should also align with the crown on a curved shelf or where you'd put the match stick on a flat shelf.  So, by measuring to the deepest part of the grip, you're also getting that dimension that you were tying to get when measuring to the crown of the curve.  I haven't looked at the link mentioned above, but if you put the short part of your t-square against the grip and measure at the string, it takes all "eyeballing" out of the measurement.

That's absolutely right Dave. Went back and tried the deepest part of the grip and it seems to match up pretty well with the top of the crowned shelf. For the flat shelves, it seems to hit about the middle. Kind of where I was trying to go but with a bit more accuracy.

thanks guys, once again, all you need to know is on the TRad Gang!!
