TRADED FOR A BW LONGBOW AND WANT TO REMOVE PREVIOUS OWNER'S NAME. ANYONE DO THIS AND COME OUT WITH A GOOD RESULT? WHAT KIND OF FINISH WAS USED? NEED HELP!
Fairly easy to remove names. In some cases, the name is written on last and there is no finish over it. In others, the finish is laid down, then the name written on the bow, then another coat or two or finish is applied on top of the name.
Regardless. Very light sanding with 220 or 320 sandpaper will take it off. I usually bracket it with masking tape before sanding. Do not sand hard, which can put a deep impression where the name was.
If the name was written on top of the finish, a little hand polishing with rottenstone will bring back the lustre, or paste wax.
If you had to go through a coat or two of finish to get the name off, you may need to spray the area with varnish. Helmsman spar urathane and Deft are two brands that have worked well for me. They come in gloss, semi-gloss and satin. Good luck.
THANKS ORION! WHEN YOU REMOVE TAPE DO YOU TRY TO FEATHER THE "BLOCK" INTO THE REST OF THE LIMB?.. IF SO WHAT DO YOU USE?
I wouldn't mask it off myself for just that reason. Feather it as you go.
If it's on top of the last layer of finish, try a pencil eraser. Worked more than once for me. Also, you can lightly sand the edges of the taped off rectangle with 400 grit or hand rub the edges off after you refinish if sanding is required.
Thank a lot guys! Happy Holidays, Flatshooter
