Title: Dowel cutter
Post by: razorback on December 18, 2008, 03:18:00 PM
I have seen several arrow build alongs that have dowel cutters for making arrows from different woods. Does anybody know where to get one of these tools.

lee valley also sells a great unit(also veritas!!)with two high quality blades.infinitely adjustable, so you can set the dowell size to match all your other equipment and wood. costs more, but a really solid piece of equipment. if you get one i can give you some setting up tips so that you dont have to learn the hard way.
the double blade with different angles gives you a better finish , i think.
the other, cheaper tools look real hany, and i am sure the quality is good like all veritas tools.certianally very cost effective.
regards

teacher, thanks for the link. Here is another link to one more of their dowel cutters.

Teacher of the Arcane's link is to a cutter that goes with the dowel cutting unit. The cutter is about $40 and the unit is $190. Probably a wonderful machine that gives great arrows but outside my price range. I want to make arrows i can throw at squirrels, bunnies, stumps and probably hit more rocks than anything in my neck o the woods.

That cutter is NOT just part of the bigger contraption. The unit that Teacher of the Arcane shows is the exact one I use...and several of my friends use.  Build a little outfeed tube so that the shaft doesnt whip around and snap.  Works super cool for three eighths shafts and you can sand them down to spine.  My buddy has cherry and oak shafts. I am gonna spin more poplar and doug fir shafts.  i LOVE that tool.

I have one as well and after some set up work it is really a good tool. And cost well it was pricy but I plan on hunting and shooting for a lot of years yet and a board of ash or doug fir is pretty cheap. Besides I like building as much of my own equipment as I can.

When I first clicked on the link from Teacher of the Arcane, it took me to the cutter designed for arrows, that goes with the fancy system.
The link when I just clicked it went to the cutter I was looking for and posted the link for.
jack and Soopernate, thanks for setting the record straight and for the comments on the cutter. I do believe i will be cuttin arra's with one of them doohickies real soon.
How much trouble is it to tune it cut clean shafts?
