Title: Can you say Bunny Hunt?
Post by: Shawn Leonard on December 13, 2008, 08:15:00 PM
We had a huge ice storm here in my part of Ny and over 250,000 without power. So what is one to do? I went bunny huntin today. The guys and gals who have been to my bunny hunt know we have lots of rabbits. Today was awesome. I left the house at 2:30 and everything was coated with ice, I mean a 1/2" of ice. I only hit two small spots and they were out and about. I hunted the two spots where Killdeer and I hunted last year and where we did the kids hunt on our first day of the Joan Leonard Memorial Bunny Hunt last year. I managed to miss 13 shots at a total of 19 0r 20 bunnies. I only hunted and hour and they were the ones I saw. I could here more going out in front of me as I skated along. It should be another banner year and I am looking forward to another great hunt with all my Tradgang friends. Shawn

That sounds like a lot of fun. We're getting snow here as well. I plan on heading out to a nearby area with my bow tomorrow morning to see if I can see some cottontails.

I was at the Bean outlet store a couple of weeks ago. I remembered that huge field of ice that we crossed to get to the thorny ravine where Dave impaled his eye on a wayward snag. I got two types of ice gripper thingies. Nothing makes me feel quite as helpless as ice. Glad you and the bunnies can show me an upside to the stuff!

Eat the raspberry-blue snow!

Where do you all hunt bunnies? The population seems pretty good in my area, but nowhere could I find more than a handfull during a days hunt.

Well, I'm glad that you are into the bunnies like crazy there! Do you all have alot of coyotes there? We've been seeing coyotes every time we go out, sometimes 2 or 3 a day.

Sounds pretty promising Shawn, we have so many fox around and so much less cover that are population is quite low. I have been making some shafts out of some old fir porch boards, my friend gave me a bunch of goose wings complete with feathers so I'll be well stocked when we show up

Wed will be the first bunny hunt of the year for me. Beagles are pumped & ready, as well as my weapon. Sorry I just cant wing arrows at the bunnies, I like to hit a few now & then. Specially after the dogs work so hard. After a while I will get back at it with bow. I have a young pup that is just coming on & packing with the older dogs & he needs some fur in his teeth. Mike

Guys, I also have a new 180 acre spot to hunt that is only a mile from the greenhouses. It is loaded with bunnies and I am gonna do a hunt there Thursday after work. We killed 17 last year with over 250 shots and I hope to do better but ya never know. We need snow, so Mikey I know it is early but put on  the pink tutu and and call the big snow dancer (Woodchucker) and get busy, maybe with your help he will make more this year!! Shawn

The landowner is an avid bird hunter, and I guess he got tired of walking into this stuff to retrieve his birds...I still have a lot of good stuff to hunt, but that stuff around the lake was just....perfect.

I like it. I am 44 today and feeling it!! I plowed snow for the last 18 hours and I managed 2 hours sleep. I am gonna do little snow clean-up at the old house and than around 3:30 go chase them bunnies with my bow. We have 8"s of fresh stuff and it should be good as we have another storm coming in for tomorrow morning, 8 more inches. Chuck keep on dancin!!! I would rather have 4ft. than none at all for the bunny hunt. I am also gonna get in a cheap plug. Anyone reading this who wants to donate to our raffle for the St. Judes kids feel free to PM me!!! We need a bow builder to build a bow for the raffle as well!! OOOOHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Shawn

Perfectly good brand-new word and it came out of the chute misspelled!
Rabbit + habitat = rabbitat.

Leave you guys alone for a few minutes and look what you do. Can't find Mikey, the rabbitat's been mown and the New Yorkers are running amok. Chucker, a little discretion, please.

Killdeer~that IS a great new word.   :bigsmyl:

Don't think I forgot what you did to me last year. When I was inside Skippers backquiver and found his bottle of Beefeater. Not my fault me falling in love with one of his pink fletched woodies. Remember "Icky-icky-icky!"? I rest my case..... I didn't know it was a boy arrow! It was dark in there.

Swampbuck I talked to Scott last week and he mentioned he knew a place a bunch of us could hunt that was quite large and had plenty of rabbits. Maybe worth a look.  Any time after the first would work for me.

Shawn, I didn't check this soon enough and the wife made other plans for the boys and I. We will be hunting on Sat. though. We have a place with lots of bunnies and pheasants. We'll be out losing some arrows. I did say losing and not loosing. Although, I guess both would have to apply.  See you soon though my friend.

Calling for snow/rain mix. Weathermen have the only job in which you can be wrong all the time and still keep your job...lol.
I think the temp is gonna be in the low to mid 30's.

Guys, I am sorry but we have to cancel. I went out just to see how it would be tomorrow and there is way to much standing water. This warm weather killed us. It is a muddy mess. I know it will freeze over night but than warm to 45. I just do not think it would be worth the effort. If it gets cold again I want to do a tune up next weekend, so watch this thread. Again I
am sorry I was pumped!!! We will get it done!! Shawn
