Title: Keepin Bows Strung?
Post by: Bojangles on December 06, 2008, 09:10:00 PM
Hi Gang,

New here and fairly new to Trad gear.  Got into it about 5 years ago but have not really had time to dedicate time to it until recently. I have a Ben Pearson H70 50# and a Bear Kodiak Magnum 57#.  Question, can these bows be left strung or would it be better to string and unstring each time?  I have a lot more questions but that will do for now.  By the way, this is one great site.  Thanks

Bo

I definitely think it is best to unstring your bow when not using it.  Also, I prefer to store mine horizontally or hanging it from a peg in a cool dry place rather that standing it up in a corner. Welcome to traditional archery. It along with this web site can be totally addictive.

I leave the ones that I shoot regularly strung all the time.

Another vote for unstrung.

Unstrung unless your shooting a lot.

Thanks for the replies.  I have always left them unstrung in the past but was concerned about possible damage from stringing and un-stringing. I am trying to shoot everyday now or at least draw and practice form.

My Kodiak Magnum is a 1967 model(found out thru web research) and my H70 is a mid 60's model (I think, can't verify yet).  Now I need to start some tuning as the arrows I have (cedar) don't seem well fitted to the bows.  Thinking about some carbon's. Thanks again

Because of a prevoius posting on the subject, I decided to try leaving one of my new glass limbed bow's strung to see if there was going to be any damage or loss of poundage....after several weeks of keeping it strung. I see no problems at all.
But if I was going to take a break from shooting, I will still un-string it to store it.

You will cause more damage to a bow by stringing/unstringing it than leaving it strung if done incorrectly. I have one bow that's been strung for over 30 years, and it is fine other than losing 2#'s in draw weight over that period.  This one of those personal preferance questions.
