Title: Arrow length pros and cons-advice
Post by: NewtoTrad2008 on December 01, 2008, 03:00:00 PM
I am building some new arrows for my recurve,Ben Pearson KM Special 52#@28". I draw right at 28" and shoot off of the shelf and three fingers under. I have some Vapor Carbonwoods 3000's (45/60)and am going to put 100 grain inserts in and shoot a 100 grain head. Here's the question, should I cut them down or leave them full length? If I cut them down how much over my draw length do I cut them?

You're gonna need to cut them depending on their characteristics. Check out this tuning guide  http://bowmaker.net/index2.htm

That will give you an idea about how much you need to cut them down.

Somthing tells me you are about to learn to tune arrows. Have fun dont dispair. The site above is a good one. once you get the hang of it you will be amased at how well your arrows will fly

Thanks Tom!
I've started to read (and learn already)!
I can hardly wait to get home, I think I am feeling ill and will have to leave work early.

Good luck!!.
Remember to follow the guide. It's a great feeling when you get straight-shooting arrows.

OK here's the update. First off thanks Tom and Pops!    I have learned a lot, this is where I am at. I have cut my arrows down to 29.25" leaving some room to cut them down if I need to, installed the 100 grain inserts and 100 grain field points and feathers on two and I left two bare. I have shot at around 12 yards and here is my result.

The only bad thing is I have to wait to try further back and can get to the range.

Are you getting groups like that on all groups, or is that your best?  Bareshaft and fletched are hitting very close together.  Moving back might tell you something, but looking good!

That was the best so far, but the rest are not too far off.

Here the latest in my attempt to build my arrows. I had my bare shafts and fletched arrows tuned and decided to fletch them all. Now I have noticed that the bottom feather is sarting to wear after shooting an arrow around 20 times. I have my nock set so that my bare and fletched arrows were hitting very close together and where I am looking. What did I do wrong?

Spine stiffened once you put the feathers on and they are hitting off the shelf.  Go to a heavier point weight(s), retune the nock, lower the brace a tad(weakens the spine), and see if that helps.

I learned the same lesson and just learned that you have to tune the carbon slightly weak (hitting right) to compensate for the feathers.

They seem to be a little stiff, like some others have said.

Thanks! I lowered the brace height and retuned the nock and that seemed to help. Like always I am amazed at how knowledgeable and helpful everyone is on TradGang!
