Hey guys I am looking to purchase my first recurve and want to try to keep the budget around $500. I don't know yet exactly what I like and dislike in a recurve since I'm still a novice and don't feel I will be able to tell the difference between a $500-600 bow versus $1,000 bow. I am interested in the following bows/manufacturers listed in no particular order below any input/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
1) Rose Oak Creations Tomcat T/D
2) Bob Lee Hunter/Sportsman
3) Checkmate Hunter II
Best bet is to shoot each of them, but Brandon at Rose Oak makes some sweet bows...Mike

In the $550 - $600 range check out RER at the link below. There are a number of in stock bows listed in the sponsor classifieds or contact me for a complete list.
I've only shot the Checkmate and the above mentioned RER recurves. I would go with the RER bows you won't be sorry!
I will have to put my 2 cents in for the Tomcat. Handles as well as any recurve I have shot. Mine is quick and quiet and IMHO it is most likely the best bang for the buck that you are likely to find! Brandon is a real pleasure to deal with as well! The Checkmate is a fine bow as well, but the grip was a bit bulky for me. I would imagine with a custom order that you can specify the grip size though. Of the bows you have listed to choose from, there ain't a cull in the bunch! RER makes some really beautiful bows, but being a lefty, I have not had the opportunity to shoot one. Good Luck on your "bow" hunt! Mike
I have a Roseoak Puma Hunter. RER and a Checkmate Hunter II....you can't go wrong with any of them....all good shooters in their own right....It would be best for you to try as many as possible, then decide for yourself....different strokes for different folks.

Shoot before you buy.
What someone on here says is best, you may hate.
Almost all bows made to day are good, some will fit you better than others. You won't know until you shoot them.
Many of the Bowyers have a try before buy. You'll find several in the 5-600 range.
two words, dryad orion
the 2 best recurves i have ever shot-ive shot many-is a wes wallace, pittsley predator, almost forgot wapiti too..ch
i forgot to mention you can get a wes wallace partner for 635.00,predator for 400.00.wapiti for 600.00.if i HAD to pick one it would be the wes wallace, but you cant go wrong with either one.hope this helps..God bless.
try somebody's Zipper. A grip that fits you, to me is what makes me decide to keep a bow.
I agree with, 'Try before you buy.'
I just got lucky and bought a used one and it fit.
They are sponsors here so I'll post a link.

I don't know of other custom bows but I can say that my Dryad Orion Recurve is the sweetest shooting bow that I have shot to date, JMHO. It's 58" with the Tonkin limbs and very smooth for me at my 29" draw.
sorry i gave wrong info on the price of the predator recurve,it is 500.00 not 400.00.sorry.
The Pittsley Predator is an awesome bow, I believe they have an entry model at $499.99 . Shoots as good as the top end model!
i agree, the predator is one of the top 3 bows ive shot.i just couldnt get use to the grip, but im finicky about grips.wes wallace or wapiti are very fine bows.ch.
Check out the classified ads on here you can get some really good deals and if you get one you dont like it is easier to get your money back. I have really paid attention to who I bought from but I have gotten 2 really good used bows from people on here.
I vote on the tomcat for ya, but agree with everyone else. Shoot one before you buy it! That said, what is good for me may not be good for you.

Look up herwaybow.com in Irvington, Ky
Sweet shooting and good to look at !!
Kevin is a great guy and straight shooter.
Please do yourself a favor try one then buy gently used. All the bow at 3/4 price
roseoak all the way
I agree with Woodduck, I bought one Zipper recurve from this site and traded for another, again from a fellow on this site and the grip on these bows is supperb. To me, they fit like a glove and your hand locates to the same place EVERY time plus you can get different limbs later if you want in either recurve or long bow to suit your riser. Hope this helps,...Lloyd
I took a chance and bought a 60" RER Takedown off of the classifieds last month. It was kind of an impulse purchase, but for the first time in my life...I DID SOMETHING RIGHT!
I absolutely love this bow. Now, if I could just impulsively buys some good arrow componants.
