Been thinking about getting a group together again this year for a bow hunt at Platte Falls. We did it a couple years ago with half a dozen guys and had a pretty good time. I got a rabbit, missed a turkey and almost got a shot at a deer.
I'm thinking maybe over the Christmas break?
We'll leave the specifics for now but everyone interested chime in and let me know what date would be good for you and we'll finalize it later.
I'm figuring on the same "anything goes" type hunt. We can chase bunnies, put on a couple little pushes for deer and maybe bust up a flock of turkeys. If someone can come up with a beagle or two, that would be awsome. I know a couple places where we could post a couple guys for deer and then go around the other end and hunt the brush for rabbits and likely push deer out to the guys on the other end. Or, if someone wants, I can put them in a place where they could just set for deer as long as they wanted but they'd need their own stand or blind as I don't leave mine in the woods on public land.
I'll try to copy and paste this to the guys on the KCTN list but I need to make sure I still have it.
This thread will be the primary place for signing up and providing info.
Who's in?
-
How much is out of state lic and tags??
-
Here's a pic of a typical mediumish buck from the place. I helped this guy find a spot back in early November and just before dark he shot this guy. We waited till the next morning to trail him and turned out he didn't go 60 yards. Long hard drag but a nice buck.
There's two others I've seen in the same area that are both a little wider but not as tall. One is a spindly 7 point with a busted brow tine and the other looked like a nicer 8 with both brows broken off.
This place always has the possibility of a real hawg showing up too.
Squirrels are not overly common but they are there and rabbits are real good some years and fair others. Turkeys are down from past years but if you cover some ground, you'll likely bump into some at some point in the day.
-
Above I said "There's two others I've seen in the same area that are both a little wider but not as tall. One is a spindly 7 point with a busted brow tine and the other looked like a nicer 8 with both brows broken off.
This place always has the possibility of a real hawg showing up too."
But don't get teh idea the place is over run with deer. It's tough hunting and sometimes crowded but by the end of gun season hunting pressure slows way down.
That time of year, just sitting can lead to a long uneventful day but with a group of guys hunting, I figure we can make something happen. Not really any kind of organized drives with deer running past standers full tilt, rather just put some guys in likely places and pinch points while the rest of us hunt the bigger areas and hopefully nudge some deer the way we want them to go.
If we were smart, we could even have the guys who want to sit for deer set stands up the evening before and they'd get in there before daylight next day. Then if some others want to just hunt small game, we'd go hunt the thick stuff and nudge the deer to the guy on stand.
-
I'm in Dave. I'll have to check and see what dates but I'm sure I can work around dates. Good idea!!!!!!!Tripper

How much is MO out of State?
-
Here is a link to the MDC website with a chart of all hunting permits and prices.
http://mdc.mo.gov/regs/permits.htm
-
The quicky price list for permits is as follows:
Non resident small game only, 2 possibilities.
1. Full season------$75.00
2. Daily------------$11.00
For frogs, birds (except turkey), mammals (except deer and furbearers), and to chase furbearers for training dogs during the closed season. A permit may be purchased for multiple days. A federal duck stamp also is required by federal regulations for hunting waterfowl and a Migratory Bird Hunting Permit is required by state regulations for hunting waterfowl, doves, snipe, woodcock and rails.
Full meal deal archers hunting permit: $150
For 2 deer and 2 turkey during the archery deer and turkey hunting season, and for small game, except furbearers, during prescribed season2
Basically, an archery permit lets you hunt anything with the bow except furbearers and migragtory birds.
If it's this late in the game and funds are tight, I doubt I'd pony up for the full archers permit and I'd just go for the small game daily permit. Of course, then I'd have the biggest buck of my life stand around taunting me from 20 yards or less....
-
I think I'd be more interested in small game anyway. I've never been on an organized bunny hunt with a group of friends.
-
I might give it a whirl.
-
Sounds like fun, I'm in if the date works out.
Trap
-
I might join you guys if the dates are favorable on my end.
Dennis
-
I'd be interested in the dates also.
-
Well guys, the date is open to input.
How about everyone give their preference if they are limited. I'm thinking maybe the Saturday between Christmas and new years?
-
I'm interested Dave and anytime will work as long as I can make it. Don't think Platte Falls has no big deer. One of the biggest Mo. deer taken(at the time it was 4 or 5) back in about the 70's was taken by an archer on that land. The land is about 2300 acres and I know there are some big deer there. It is archery only for deer.
-
I'll be there if there aren't any conflicts with family stuff. Let me know what dates work for you. The Saturday mentioned (12/27) works for me. Thanks for getting this started Dave.
-
Same here, if no conflicts I'll come. Thanks, Ben
-
Sounds good to me! I had fun the last time we got together Dave.
Chris
-
Sounds like fun. The 27th is open right now.
Bill
-
Well, looks like the 27th is good for most of you. Funny thing..... when I mentioned Saturday, I didn't know what the date was, just figured Saturday would work well. Turns out it's the 27th and that is my Daughter Lindsey's birthday.
Maybe I'll just have to bring her along. It would be cool for her to get some encouragement from some other hunters besides me. I took her out for a bunny hunt last weekend with the bows and she had fun. Got cold, but had fun. Now I just need to get some arrows built up for her. All she has now is one carbon and about 3 or 4 cheap kids arrows with the crimped on points. I think I might have some shafts in the 35 or 40 pound range down the basement.
I posted some pics of her and my boy Emmett on another thread, but I'll put 'em up here too. A guys gotta brag on his kids a little now and then....
Here she is at the house all decked out in her huntin' duds.
Here's Lindsey and Emmett as we were about to head back to the truck.
-
Well this sounds like lots of fun, but the only day I can't make it is the 27th. My sister is in town from Detroit that day. Hope Everyone has a great time. Be careful and take lots of pictures. Maybe if this one works out We can do another one after the first of the year.
bretto
-
Bretto,
Twosheds pm'd me about him having a hunt on the Kansas side for the guys who can't make it to mine or don't wish to buy a nonresident license. He'll probably post here about it.
So, what's the preference for those of you who plan to make it? Anyone really dead set on deer? I've got some good spots. I can get you in the area and you can narrow it down to a particular tree or spot on the ground. Who wants to try hard for bunnys? There are several spots with monster brush piles and some good briar patches but I have not hunted them this year so I don't know how the numbers are. Some years I can kick up half a dozen in an afternoon and other years I have trouble finding any.
Lastly, I mentioned it before but I'll say it again, if any of you have access to a beagle or two it would REALLY help. Most of the brush piles are bulldozer size and you just can't stomp a bunny out of it if you tried. A dog makes a huge difference. I used to have one but he mysteriously dissapeared. With a dog, you could count on some of us getting shooting but without a dog and especially if we have no snow, trying to bust brush with a nocked arrow and get shooting at light speed rabbits....well, we'd have to get lucky. Last time we did this I actually got lucky and killed one that only hopped a couple feet deeper into a brush pile and stopped with his head and body hidden. He couldn't see me so thought he was hid but "I still sawed his wittle ears and then I killed da wabbit!!!...Killed da Wa-bbit!!! KILLED da WA-bit!!" (Think Elmer Fudd 30 years ago. What a classic!)
Anyway, let's hear what you'd like to do.
Oh, Platte Falls is also tailor made for stump shooting. Being a river bottom area, there are miles of levees and walking along the levee and shooting down onto the flat, retrieving your arrows and then shooting back at the side of the levee can keep a guy busy for hours if he wants. I'm maybe gonna throw a tennis ball into my pack for a target if we get bored.
And Lastly, how about times and food? There is an archery range with a grill and shelter area and I also have a big two burner propane stove. We could make our own breakfast of say scrambled eggs and bacon with cheese and salsa....toss it in a tortilla, wash it down with some fresh brewed coffee.....mmmmmmmmm.
If anyone wants to hunt deer in the early morning, I could meet them up there say the day before if they need help finding a place to sit and they could go in on their own before light. then the guys who just want to hunt small game could show up at a later hour like 8 or 9 o'clock and we'd make breakfast then start our hunt. For that matter, there's a Waffle House in Platte City about a mile away.
I'm tossing out a lot of ideas here I know. Maybe too many? Just let me know what ya'll want to do so we can get a better handle on the logistics.
-
If I can make it I believe I will go for the small game and stumps. Will probably be shooting more pictures than arrows.
Dennis
-
Small game for me. I'm out of deer tags :bigsmyl:

I'm game to give it a try. Not sure of my Christmas schedule yet, but hoping the date works out.

Use the zoom bar on the left to zoom in or out. You can also click the aerial map button on the top right to get an aerial photo view.
On the map picture, look for route HH going east off I-29. You may need to zoom in to get it to show. Where it curves north and starts to border the green area is about where the archery range is where we will all meet.
Use the little hand cursor to drag the picture around and you can see the whole property.

I talked to my wife and there are no plans for that day so I have a green light! I’ll be there.
-
I'll be there if road conditions allow it. I'm free for the day at this point. Of course with 3 youngsters, anything could happen.
Thanks for starting the thread Dave, sounds like a good time. My freezer is not full, I think I'd opt to climb a tree.

Count me in for the 27th. Still have deer tags, it's been a frustrating year. Got some items I'll bring along in case someone has Christmas money to spend.I'll hunt anything you want to hunt.
-
All right John!
We'll see ya there.
Any of you guys who want to hunt deer, please contact me via PM so I can get an idea of how many of you there are and can be thinking about stand sites. If any of you already are familiar with Platte Falls and have a spot in mind, let me know that too.
I might get Lindsey set up somewhere for the evening or let her be a stander if we do a drive. I'm working on some arrows for her right now. Depending on how well she's able to shoot them, I'll decide on wether to let her try for deer or not. More than likely, I'll be waiting till next season for that but ya never know. She's been shooting for ten years but never really bow hunted yet.
-
Any more maybe answers turned into definite yeses?
I've been contacted by a couple guys who want to sit for deer if we can put on a push or two. I'm thinking those who want to hunt deer can meet with me fairly early in the morning and we can get everyone pointed in the right direction.
Then, since I'm gonna be there ahead of those hunting small game anyway, I think I'll take my big camp stove and fire it up to make some coffee and breakfast. If there is only the half dozen or so confirmed now, I'll be able to provide all the chow. If we start getting into a sizeable group, maybe some of you can pitch in to bring some additional supplies? How's pancakes, eggs and bacon sound? Maybe some fried taters or donuts?
Unless of course you all don't want to eat or want to hit the Waffle House instead?
-
Pretty sure to definate I'll be there. I have tags left, but I can drive if we don't have enough of them.
-
Hey Dave, that sounds like something I'd like to do.Are you talking one day or the whole week-end?
-
Pretty much just Saturday though if anyone wants to hunt more, it is public land.
-
Brian, that's great.
If you have any ideas on good stand sites for the guys who want to hunt deer, feel free to chime in. I've got 3 or 4 good ones in mind but not all would work for doing drives. Some of the areas are very hard to get to this year without waders because of all the flooded bottoms on the north side.
I think I may try to find a map or aerial of Platte Falls online that I can copy to Word and try to mark some stand sites on it and forward them out. But you guys would have to kinda keep the info to yourselves. I don't mind a bit helping friends and showing my stand sites but I don't want them posted on the internet so anybody can see them. :archer:
-
Dave, Im all for hunting the area the way we did the last time. Still hunting along the river moved alot of deer if I I have a beagle but it is a house pet, more out of shape than that basset that we had the last time. I may consider bringing it but the family would hate to lose it.
-
I know of an area that looked good on the north side in the bottom, but if its holding water it probably won't appeal to anybody. If its iced over it would probably make too much noise.
Haven't hunted up in there in 2-3 yrs. Dave you remember where we hunted that one time down the road near the archery range and saw those coyotes? There was some thick cover in there and pushing that again might create some opportunity.
-

-
Dang Brian,
You just brought up a point I hadn't even considered.... If the water is frozen enough, the deer won't have to follow the levees like I'd planned for a couple of the stand sites but could cross the ice. So much for a pinch point!
Hopefully, it'll be thin enough they won't risk it.

Hey guys, only 12 days to go!!!!
Do we have any more definites?

Hi Dave
You need to update your list to show that I will be there. :bigsmyl:

Tom, you are now added to the super elite group of "sure shows"!
Ya threw me with the new avatar. Cool hat.
Oh yea, just a teaser.....
There is a CHANCE (at this point, just a chance) that we may have the benefit of not just one beagle but possibly a whole pack. How cool would that be????!!!
Should learn more in the next couple of days.
11 more days!
-
Hey Dave!
Just getting back with you here instead of the phone to let you and anyone else attending, the "pack" status. I spoke with Mike and he's in for the 27th. He'll have 3 fully trained beagles and as I told you over the phone, this is his passion so these dogs should be outstanding! Give me a call this week sometime at either number. Looking forward to meeting new friends.

Hey…what about Moeller? If we plan to have an animal in any of our pictures we should make sure Brain is there! Oh wait… Tripper and Bill are going to be there. We will have plenty of animals in our pictures. Animals seem to fall over dead at the sight of these two. I still hope you can make it Brian! :bigsmyl:

My money is still on Brian. I'm not use to enjoying this kind of success. The reason it's so cold around here is because hell has froze over.
-
Originally posted by BMN:

That should get the deer moving.
I should add Chris to the group of deadeyes also. Now I see why there are bag limits. With these four in the park at the same time the place would be void of animals by the time we leave if there weren’t limits.
-
Don't sell yourself short Tom. Your good shot yourself. My money is on Bill and Tripper they obviously have icewater running through their vanes.
As of right now, I'm in. Should be really fun with the beagles. Never bowhunted behind any, but sure have shotgunned behind'em.
Providing the weather aint too bad in the morning, Woodsey Dave and I are going up to some public land to hunt and retrieve some of his stands.
-
Hahahahaha, I'm sure you guys will find out my luck only runs for so long. I'm just waiting to get hit by a bus of have a airplane land on my house.
-
Ok fellas, here's the deal with the beagles. My neighbor is an avid rabbit hunter with no experience with bowhunters so I thought he would be a little nervous, but he was more excited about seeing us go for em' with sticks then his pellets. He will be returning home from S. America on the afternoon of the 26th and assured me that he will be ready to go. I'd like to get over there at the what ever agreed time and meet everyone. Wanted to see if you guys are interested in a throw together breakfast. We usually do this on pheasant hunts were we cook over a turkey fryer with an 30" disk converted into a wok and have breakfast burritos. I'll bring the cooking stuff (propane, cooker, wok, utensiles, oil, butter, etc) if you guys want to bring eggs, pre-cut taters, tortillas, hot sauce, shredded cheese, and so on. Let me know if you're interested in doing this. Chris
-
Ouch! Twisting my arm wasn’t necessary. How could anybody say no to this. Have kitchen will travel. :biglaugh: I like this guy already.
I’m in for the potatoes or is it potato’s? Whatever… I’ll bring the tubers.
We really need a graemlin with a knife and fork.
PS Chris Kinslow needs to clean out his mail box.
-
I think Im gonna make it. Bunnys for me though I always have deer tags lol. Whats the meeting time and place?
-
Chris,
I'm already planning on making breakfast but I certainly don't mind help! I'm gonna buy a whole ham for Christmas and cook it in my smoker so I'll have plenty of leftovers I expect. I'm also gonna bring my two burner propane stove and I've got a farm disc/wok too. Also some cutting boards and knives. We can chop taters on the spot. Your extra stove will certainly help if we're gonna make some taters and coffee. There is a charcoal grill there too. I'm thinking maybe a wood "campfire" in the grill would be nice to warm up around. We did that once before. The group has grown nicely eh? Gonna be a serious feed!
Do any of you guys have one of them monster campfire coffee pots? I've got a 10 cup but when ya start filling mugs on a cold morning, ya don't get that many fill ups. We'll drain one pot before everyone gets a first fill up. It would be nice to have a larger one or a second one. I might bring my coleman stove just for coffee pots. Two normal size ones would fit nicely.
I'll bring ham, some home made salsa (pico de gallo) and some fresh ground coffee. A couple frying pans, some oil, onions and seasoning for the taters
We'll also need....
Firewood
Tortillas (about 4 dozen)
Water (about two or three gallons)
Eggs (two or three dozen maybe more)
Styrofoam cups
Paper plates
A roll of paper towels
Cheese (colby jack is good)
Somethin' sweet like donuts or danish
Sugar and creamer
Plastic spoons and forks
We need to keep a runnig tally of what anyone wants to bring. Anything left over, I'll try to make up myself.
Also, I'm really struggling with the logistics of getting guys set up for deer early and doing breakfast and a bunny hunt. Work hasn't permitted me to do much deer hunting this year so I haven't been around all the areas I normally hunt. I wanted to have exact stands picked for everyone who wants to hunt deer and be able to take them in early but with just me, I don't see how I can get multiple guys set up in stands that may be on different sides of the river early before we start the bunny hunt.
I'm thinking maybe we should all get there reasonably early and meet at the archery range for breakfast. Lets say 7:00am? I've got a big aerial photo of Platte Falls and there should be map pamphlets at the parking lot and what I can do is point the deer hunters to likely spots and let them get set up on their own or they could tag along with the rest of us and when we get in a spot where we might be able to push deer, we can do simple posting of standers before we start. Like we did last year when we pushed out the place between the river and the levee and had standers at the pinch point. Then, as the day goes on, the serious deer hunters can move in to areas that could be good for an afternoon to evening sit.
Anyone who wants to set up before daylight, I'll do my best to get you information ahead of time on good places to go. We might even be able to get on the phone and computer together at the same time and pull up mapquest and then I can direct you to pretty specific areas to set up. Just be warned, some of the places I have in mind are a pretty good hike from the parking lots but that's part of what makes them good eh?
I figure we're all pretty seasoned hunters and if I get you close, you can pick a tree eh? Many of you will likely pick a better spot than I would anyhow... There ain't but one mounted head on my wall and it's a gun kill.
So, anyone who wants to be in a stand before daylight, call me ahead of time and we'll make plans. My cell is 816-582-4003. This weekend in the evening will be a good time. Might give some of you time to run up early and scout out the areas I have in mind.
-
I think I have the tortillas and paper towels already at the house. I'll bring those and maybe a bag of jerky to snack on.
-
Guys I hate to do this but I'm not going to be able to make it. I'll be at the firestation on the 27th. I've been kicking around ideas on how I can get off but I have to use the vacation for the holidays. I feel like a horses butt. I was really stoked about getting together with you guys but I don't think I'm going to be able to pull it. If anything changes I'll let you know. Sorry guys. Tripper
-
Would it help if we started a giant fire? (Only kidding Home Land Security)
No problem Tripper, we knew this going in. There will be other times to get together. Could you at least bottle up some of your luck and send it to us?
-
Dang, that's too bad. I understand all about rotating work schedules, unplanned overtime, lack of vaction etc.
Any more thoughts on you doing this on the Kansas side one of these days?
-
Tom, I will pull up platte falls on google maps and wish some luck upon you guys. We don't need any help starting fire's around here. Between the turkey fryers and the space heaters, were really busy.
Dave, I'm thinking about early to mid-January. I will try to look at the calendar and figure out some days. If you don't mind, I will just post it here on this thread. Thanks and sorry guys. Tripper

I haven't heard the weather for days.... Any chance of fresh snow between now and then?
-
Dave, I went and pre-scouted the pinch point areas you indicated earlier. There are several stands already in those spots, probably there the whole season??? Won't stop me from slipping up a tree nearby, if they are not being used.
Anyway, guess I don't want to miss breakfast and meeting everyone, so will plan to meet at the range, then go get on a stand before you start driving. Or, I can drive if more are needed.
I also have a big propane cooker (two burner - 750k btu each) IT will flat haul-the-mail, if you need me to bring it. What else do you need be to bring? Eggs? Deer sausage? What?

Yes… kind of.
Tuesday 30% ice pellets
Wednesday 20% snow
Thursday 20% rain
Friday 30% snow
Saturday: Partly sunny, west wind 13 MPH, high 34

By the way, BMoeller and I tried to go to Elam a few days ago. Got to within a few miles before we had to turn back south. We hit the 1/4" of ice on Z & D Hiways (untreated)-after already passing the snow plow that was in the ditch and calling for rescue. We wound up hunting further south around Smithville Lake.
I hope the weather improves too!

Nobody commented on it, but I mentioned a 7:00am meeting time at the archery range. Will that be a major inconvenience for anyone? I'll carry my cell phone all day in case anyone shows up later in the day and wants to find us. 816-582-4003.

I dont' see any way to attach a picture to a tradgang PM and I dont' want to post a map of all my hunting spots in this post. I've got one all made up and an explanation of each stand site.

Parents called and said they'd be here tomorrow. We'll see if I go. I'm thinking if I do it will be till noon.
-
Dang Brian,
Don't your Mom and Dad know that huntin' comes first??? :bigsmyl:
Hope you can make it at least for a little while.
-
Hope everyone here had an great Christmas with family & friends and I'm looking forward to Saturday. Just wanted to let everyone know that Dave & I have tabulated the grocery list and we should have a pretty decent breakfast. We do however still need some firewood, a couple dozen eggs and some potatos chopped up Juliann style if anyone would care to donate. I'm planning on get there between 7/0730 with my cookware and a few tables. Thought we'd rustle up the breakfast then go and "get er' done" with Mike's beagles. See everyone one Saturday!
-
Well with having three kids living thoughout the state, mom and dad called last night and won't be here till tuesday. I told them no problem. I'll be there brightand bushy tailed.
Dave, if you can think of it and have space, bring that jacket we talked about earlier. I'd like to check it out.
-
It's in the truck Brian.
Chris, I'll be able to bring the potatos.
Got my big stove and disc all ready last night. I'll round up my coffee pots and coleman stove tonight. I'm probably gonna try to be there a little before seven but we'll see how that goes. If I'm up late tonight getting my stuff together, I won't be early.
Woodsydave, let me know if you made it up there today to scout and what spot you decided on.
Kind of a bummer that the snow all melted but at least it's not gonna be sub zero temps. We might get some fresh snow while we're out from the sound of it but it could be rain too. I hope it's snow.
Oh yea, I'd strongly suggest everyone wears rubber boots if you have them. Might be pretty sloppy in places and might have a few places of standing water to cross. We'll mostly be hunting higher ground but there are numerous ditches and small creeks we may encounter.
-
I want to wish all you guys good luck tomorrow!! I hope you you have some success tomorrow or at least have a great time which I know you will. Sorry again I couldn't be there, maybe next time. Tripper

We really need a graemlin with a knife and fork.
I guess you don’t like Camden Point Potatoes?
How much wire wood do we need? If I signup for this are you going to bring firewood too? :biglaugh:
-
Tom,
I guess I'm starting to forget who promised what... :readit:
I'll have a knife or two and cutting board(s) there. Shouldn't take more than 5 minutes or so to cut them up. Be sure to give them a good rinse at home as we won't have running water on site. I don't plan to peel them. Just cube and go...
Are you going to be there pretty early? The reason I ask is the potatos take the longest to cook of everything we'll have. A big honking pan full will take at least 30 to 45 minutes if I do it right.
I'm thinkig I can make the taters in my disc and Chris can do the eggs in his. I have a flat griddle for my other burner and we'll use it to heat tortillas. I've got a bunch of ham too.
Make sure you guys don't spoil your appetite at the house before you head out! It's gonna be a feed!
-
They cook a lot faster if they are precooked. That is my plan anyway. I'll be there around 6:45 or 7:00. taters will be chopped and browned. Heat and eat is all they will need.
Will 12 split pieces of wood be plenty?
-
Good luck on your hunts tomorrow guys, I'm not going to be able to make it. My truck is still in the body shop (2 weeks). I was hoping to get it done by now but with the holidays it just won't be.

Wish I could go to fella's. Tomorrow is My last family dinner of the season. Sister and Her Husband haven't been in town for 4 years so I probably should visit with them. Have a great hunt. There will be lots of good TradGangers there for sure.

Dave, I did make it up there today and scouted. However, the only place I found that I liked already had a ladder stand sitting there.
I will probably just show up at the feed, have breakfast and tag along with the group. Will have my treestand in case we do a push or if I hunt the evening hunt.
Brian, glad you are going. Maybe we can team up for the evening hunt.

I saw Brett’s name and thought I was going to have to make a run to the store for more potatoes. :bigsmyl: Sorry you can’t make it Brett.
-
Guys I talked withIrish and he is heading to AZ in the morning for a visit. That means that neither one of us can make it to the bunny hunt. I still am unable to drive since my stroke so I will not be able to make it. Sorry guys, I was looking forward to meeting some of you all for the first time and becoming reaquainted with some of you others.Good luck hunting. Hate to miss out on the food.
-
Well dang John, too bad you didn't know about that sooner, maybe someone would have been able to pick you up. Heck, maybe someone STILL could?
Tom, if you check this in the morning, I found my second coffee pot so we should be good to go. No need to fill the thermos at the quicktrip.
I finally got Lindseys arrows finished and got all my stuff together (I hope!!!) It's 12:41am and I'm gonna hit the sack. Gotta get up about 5:00am....
See you all there!

Woke up to roaring winds and pouring rain with sleet mixed in....
Just checked the Intelicast radar loop http://www.intellicast.com/national/radar/current.aspx?animate=true&location=USMO0453 and it looks like we may be getting this for a while.
If any of you check in here before going, I'm still gonna be there as I don't think I could get ahold of everyone to try to change plans at this point. I'm hoping that by the time we eat breakfast the worst will have blown through. I believe we're supposed to get some sort of precipitation for most of the day but as long as the winds die down and it doesn't flat out pour, I can handle some rain. If it turns to snow, that would be great as long as the roads didn't get bad.
Guess we'll find out who's tough and who's talk..... :campfire: :coffee: :biglaugh: until things improve.
Should have plenty of food and there will be a roof over our heads if we need it.
See ya there!
Any questions, call me at 816-582-4003. Cell reception is sometimes poor at the archery range but it's not as bas as it used to be. I'll keep it with me at all times.
-
Weeeeee'rrrrrre baaaaaaaaackk!!!!
We had an absolute blast!
Talk about a rough start though.... thunder, lightning, hail and high winds from about 4:30am till 7:00am then steadily lessening rain (slowly) until it was getting halfway bearable by the time we had finished breakfast. By then temps had dropped below freezing and everything was coated with a good layer of ice that looked real pretty but made for noisy going.
Chris, his boy Hunter and their friend Mike showed up with the beagles and the other half of the breakfast fixins.
I'll upload my pictures to photobucket and get some up here as soon as I can. Tom took a bunch too.
Short version is we had a good feed, everyone either got shooting or at least saw bunnies but had not shot. None taken but I think I can speak for all and say we had a great time.
Met a future super hard core hunter who is probably tougher than most of the grown ups who were there. Chris's boy Hunter was sick, threw up several times and coouldn't keep anything down but WHAT A TROOPER!!! That kid kept up with all of us, never complained and stayed with it all day. Like somebody else said today, that kid can share my camp anytime!
Should be some others checking in soon. We'll try to get a couple stories up.

Here's the weather radar pic on the tv at about 5:00am.
There were actually others crazy enough to show up! On the left is Kris Kinslow and Brian Moeller. My daughter Lindsey is in the background gloming a burrito and trying to stay warm by the fire.
Here's the toughest guy in the group. Hunter Couch, ten years old and hard core about hunting. That's my disc on the stove with a bunch of taters with ham, bacon and onions. Chris had the eggs and sausage in his disc.
Lindsey was the first to "almost" get a shot. The bunnie came across a field road and stopped about 17 yards away under the edge of a cedar. she hit full draw but the bunnie decided it was time to scat about that same time. Oh yea, today was her 14th birthday and it was the first time she's ever shot at an animal with her bow. She says it was her best birthday ever.

It was a BLAST! Its been a long time since I got to hear beagles running rabbits. Got one shot and just missed at about twenty yards. If Chris is gracious enough to get us in on the federal grounds again we could call this hunt the "Jail Break Bunny Hunt".
Great meeting Chris, Hunter, Floyd, Joe, Mike, Lindsey (happy birthday) and seeing the regulars again.
Can't wait to see some pics.
-
Glad to hear you guys had a great time. sorry to have missed it.Hope my no showing with cheeze didn't spoil the eating. I thought that the wife was going to drive me up there in a pinch but she's getting tired of hauling me around.Going to try for deer in the morning with my daughters boyfriend. Love hunting these metro bucks.
-
Here's my favorite pic of the day. Cedars and bunnys just go together in my mind.
Of course, I had to pose for a shot too in the same general area.
Here's two of the guys posted on the road waiting for a shot. I think most of the first batch of shot opportunities happened in this area. I had two shots, Lindsey had one, these guys got shooting. Mikes beagles brought the rabbitaround half a dozen times.
Here's Tom standing about where the rabbit was when he got his first shot at it. Plenty of brush but he missed just over the top.
Here's a shot of part of the group. Tom, I love that hat!

Here's one showing the ice laden brush at the Leavenworth farm.
If you look close at the center, there is a bluebird sitting there. There were several around me but I couldn't get a very good pic.
And here's most of the lineup. Just missing me, Tom and Hunter.
Left to right is Mike, Brian, Dave, Kris, Floyd, Joe and Chris.
Tom has the picture with all of us in it.

Good pics Dave........ we want to remember the year of the "icey wrabbit hunt!!"
I had a great time and enjoyed meeting the KC Trad group. I know we will find lots more fun stuff to do, even after season ends.
Suppose there are any Rhino roaming the Flint Hills???? If not, I'm also dying to shoot an Armadillo. Have shot at one before, but missed the little "begger" twice.
Let's get together again soon!
-Dave
-
Glad you guys were able to get out and hunt. Wish I could have made it.
We were under a tornado watch from about 9pm last night to 5am this morning. At 5am it was pouring rain and lots of lightning here, no ice or sleet though.
Woodsy Dave, if you want to hunt armadillos come down here. The big flood we had 1-1/2 years ago pretty much thinned them out but they are starting to show up again. I've had more than one hunt screwed up by them.

I had a great time also guys!
Thank you Dave B. and Chris C. for putting this hunt together. A special thank you to Mike for bring out his beagles Jewels, Pepper and Anna.
Brian I like the name of the hunt.
I have pictures to share too but I am also at home dealing with dial-up and a Mac. I think the Mac was invented to give people something to throw.
Chris, Dave, Mike, Hunter, Lindsey, Floyd and Joe it was a pleasure to meet all of you and spend the day with you. I hope we can do it again soon. Chris thanks for taking us to the killing field! I have always wanted to gain access to that ground. It looks like a real paradise. This KCTN thing is the bomb! This has been the best year I have ever had for hunting and the guys in the KCTN are the reason why. I hope we can keep it going.
Hunter….You’re the man! You are a tuff cookie.
Happy birthday Lindsey!

Given the way this day started I think it says a lot about the folks here on Trad Gang and KCTN. Pouring down rain, cold temps, and strong wind would have kept a lot of folks in bed. I guess we must be tough and not just talk!
Dave B. and Chris C. kept the disc grills and coffee going while Tom, Brian, and I made a fire in the grate as the rain and wind pounded down.
Proved once again that perseverance pays off as Tom kept after that fire and sure enough we got it going pretty well and it sure felt good to warm up my hands over the flames. It made a tough start seem pretty neat after it was all said and done.
I've never hunted with beagles before and I must say I was really impressed. Those little dogs did a great job and Mike obviously knows how to handle them well.
Overall a really fun day and I can't wait to do it again. I'm going to go ahead and post some of Tom's pictures tonight.

Ha ha Chris! (See I spelled it right this time. Don't know why I thought you used a K)
"Given the way this day started I think it says a lot about the folks here on Trad Gang and KCTN. Pouring down rain, cold temps, and strong wind would have kept a lot of folks in bed. I guess we must be tough and not just talk! "
I know I mentioned that this morning about the be tough or talk tough but I also thought of the old saying, "If you're gonna be dumb, ya better be tough." :banghead:
Once again guys, thanks for showing up and making this day as fun as you did. Chris and Mike, we owe ya big for the use of the beagles. This is the third time we've done a hunt like this and it's the first time we had dogs unless you cound one kinda lazy basset. (Hi Scott!!) It turned a miserable day into a truely fun time.
Now, if I can just talk the wife into letting me get another beagle....
By the way Chris, how is Hunter doing tonight? Feeling any better?
-
By the way, I couldn't help feeling like I needed to keep an eye on Hunter today. That boy looks like he could be a twin to my Emmett only Emmett is only eight. His facial experessions and everything made me feel like I was looking at my own kid.
Here's a pic of Emmett last time we went out. It's not very good but do you guys see the resemblence? Compare to the pic on page 7 where Hunter is standing by the disc.

All-
Thanks to all who were able to make it this morning and appreciate your gratitude, it was a grand time and Hunter is finally starting to feel better. One of my other boys apparently has the same flu bug so we'll all end up with it by Monday. I'll be in touch with Dave B. for another hunt sometime after the first and we'll get after em' again. Chris

Thought about driving up just to meet some of my fellow tradgangers this morning but I wussed out :bigsmyl: Looks like you guys and gal ( happy birthday Lindsey )had a great time today.

WOW! Looks like you guys had a great time. Thanks everybody for posting pics so all of us out in no go land can share in the fun. Tripper

Looks like you guys had a great time. Sorry I missed it. I must admit that I underestimated you all :banghead: I'll know better next time. Glad to see you all had a great time!
Bill
-
Well Bill don't feel alone. I got up at 5:00 and turn on the weather channel, it was showing thunderstorms and freezing rain up north. Didn't think there was chance of anyone showing up and I knew I didn't want on slick roads, so I went back to bed also. Ben
-
I'm just near the end of a cold/flu and I sure wish I could have made it. Maybe next go around. Looks like a fun time.
-
Didn't have a chance at making this one :( but I would sure like to make the next one :D
Keep us in informed on the next one, You guys are one tuff group :notworthy:
Tracy
-
So hey, when do you guys want to do this again???
-
Put me in coach.......... I'm ready anytime! I gotta grudge to settle with a fast bunny! (had to have 6 legs to move that fast)
WoodsyDave
-
I'm game as well.
-
I'm ready is, it going to be on the Kansas side this time? Thanks, Ben
-
What do you guys think? Date, location? What about Valley Falls if you want to do a Kansas side. I know there is alot of game up there and also a chance of picking an arrowhead up or two. I started another Kansas City thread for the upcoming hunt. Tripper
