Title: Tab.....or Glove??
Post by: Lewis Brookshire III on November 28, 2008, 04:15:00 PM
I have read many times that the tab gives a much better release than a glove. I have used a glove for five years now. I have tried a tab a few times but I shoot three under and I have only tried with a split tab that I could find at a local Archery shop. I have been thinking of giving a three under tab a serious go-round.

I am curious what the rest of you guys use. Tab or glove and what kind.

I have used a Damascus glove now for three years, just so you know.

I shoot split and have always used a calfhair tab with a finger separator.Gave a glove a try a couple times but just didn't feel right to me.
Buddy of mine(Tdog on here)can shoot glove, tab, even leather work glove and shoots very well with any of them.

Grizzly Damascus Super Glove with Cordura finger tips. I shoot split fingered. Love the glove, but Grizzly got someone new to make it and now the finger sleeves are too big around for my fingers. The old ones were perfect.

I have two old Fred Bear gloves that I like very much. They are single seam gloves with closed ends. I guard them closely, because I have not seen one for sale in quite a while. I have no idea what I will use when I wear these out. They are great.

Duraglove, but I have a couple of tabs I am experimenting with. So far, I'm still a glove shooter.

I use a damascus glove, have tried a tab.  I just decided  I like the simplicity of the glove.  I have only shot Tradional for a couple of years.

I shoot 3 under with a tab. I went to a Leather shop got a piece of scrap leather for like $6.00 and cut about 9 tabs out of it. I trimmed here and there to find the shape that works best and cut the rest from there. I'm set on tabs for a few years!

I started out using a glove only. After practicing a few times with a tab I now shoot with one from time to time. I've also been known to shoot bare fingers as well..but not for very long.   :archer:

Started shooting with a glove years ago.  Switched to a tab about 2 years into shooting a recurve.  That was 11 years ago.  Haven't got back to the glove.

Glove 90% of the time for 3-under and split-finger shooting, although my shooting doesn't change much when using a tab. Just perfer the feel of a glove.

Started with a tab, went to a glove but got finger groves and a callous really fast.  Went back to tab last weekend and MUCH better release!

I also have made tabs from a number of materials. I find that the softer the material the better. Sometimes a nice thin vinyl is very good, like from a boot liner. Lots of feel, very slick release.

OK> So someone told me that the gloves cut or groove the strings. Anyone have that experience?

Glove for me. I shoot an Alaskan Skookum glove but my next glove will be a cordovan tipped glove. I tried a tab for a couple months but just keep going back to the glove. It just feels right to me.

I have to agree with predator1. I think it may depend on whether you sit in a tree or move. I found if i am stalking/moving i go very instinctive and a glove is the only way to go. I want it on all the time where a tab bugs me. I don't want to think about having a tab in the right position. Great for the range but I change (mentally and phisically)when i hunt.So i realize what i am like when i hunt and accomodate my nature. Alaskan Superglove for me.

I shoot both recurves and long bows.  Started out years ago with "no pinch" tabs.  Never did like the feel when hunting.  Have gone to a glove and love the feel it gives me. I use two fingers under with my bows that pull 50-60lbs.  Have a three fingers under cordovan tab that I got from Three Rivers that is the best as far as tabs go.  Gives a clean release, but then there is that "feel" thing again.  I have a Big Shot Buffalo glove from American Leathers that is the best glove so far.  Lots of the Old Timers (Masters of Bare Bow Videos) use tabs in some configuration. Sort of a "tastes great or less filling" debate! Plan to try Black Widow"s top glove.   :biglaugh:

I have shot with a glove since I started shooting bows at age 5. Now at 53 I still shoot split finger with a glove. Put it on and it's always there, to me it's like shooting with bare fingers. Never have to worry about if it's on right, just draw and shoot. One less thing to have to think about allows for more concentration on impact point.

I use a home made Cordovan tab.  Whenever I try to shoot with a glove, it feels like my anchor finger is 6" from my tooth!

Was using Damascus and after the second one I bought wore out in about a week I decided to try something different.I bought the Cordovan tab from Alaska Bowhunting Supply about three years ago and I don't think it will ever wear out.

I shoot split fingers, I don't use either. I shoot bare fingers. I found the only thing that was hurting my finger was the nock point so i switched to dental floss. Try shooting more often with bare fingers and you'll get use to it, and won't be able to switch back. Plus a glove or tab is one less thing you'll have to worry about anymore. Anybody else do the same?

I tried a tab but because I started with a glove and shot it for so long the tab was just weird.I still experiment with using it though from time to time.

Mostly tabs, I have an old Neet palm tab, and some home made copies. I am going to make 2 more today. I lost one last week while hunting and forgot to pack a backup.

I have used them both off and on over the years.  Always end up back with a tab.  I think I have found the best tab made.  That is the Black Widow cordovan tab.  I had been shooting the super leather ones, but would shoot them out in 3-4 months.  After getting the cordovan one, I have been shooting it for over a year and still as slick as can be.  I think I have a better chance of losing it rather than shooting it out.

I use a Cavalier Elite tab.  I can't explain it, but there's something about "feeling" the string slide past my fingertips on release.  I tried shooting with gloves on with the tab, but ended up cutting off the fingertips on the glove so I could feel my face/string.

I'd like to switch over to a glove, but I've yet to find one that gives me the light, airy feeling of a tab.  Most I've tried feel bulky and overbuilt.

Tab for me. Anchoring with my bare finger tip at the corner of my mouth feels better to me than having a bulkier glove there.

I tried a glove for a brief period of time 20 or so years ago, but never really liked them. The primary reason I use a tab is the same thing Two Arrows mentioned: I can feel my anchor better.

Just because you shoout 3-under doesn't mean you have to use a 3-under tab. As a matter of fact, I really dislike 3-under tabs, especially for hunting. A plastic finger separator lets me hold the tab in place even when my fingers aren't on the string.

I just use a release.... just kidding sorry couldn't resist.  I started with a glove, and switched to a tab. I use the cheapest tab I can get.  I've lost 'em, broke 'em, shot 'em out, ran through the clothes dryer you name it.  That way I don't feel out of money when they're trashed.  I've tried gloves and bare fingers and just don't like the feel anymore.  I even shelled out 15 bucks for a nice pretty looking tab with all kinds of bells and whistles and broke that too.  Can't seem to brake my bow though and that's what counts.  So cheapo tab for me off the shelf at the local W-mart for 13 years, and I'm only 26 so who knows what I'll use down the road.

Over the years I have tried both tab and glove.  I shoot split finger and for whatever reason could never totally get used to using the tab.  Even the best fitting soft tabs didn't feel consistent from shot to shot, and I was getting some finger pinch.  So, I think I have finally decided to stick with the glove.  At least my shots feel more consistent from one to the next, and that says a lot for helping build and maintain my shooting confidence.

So far when shooting fingers in the begining when I started with wheel bows (before using a release) and now that I'm shooting Traditional I feel with a finger release there is nothing smoother than a calf hair tab, JMHO.

I'm not sure about anyone else, but i'll use a tab for tournaments, and a glove for hunting. only reason i switch is so i don't drop it outta the stand, it's warmer, and covers scent.  opposite for tourneys. tabs allow more air flow, fingers dont sweat as much, and i do seem to get a cleaner and more reliable release. but that's just my 2 cents worth.

Brinkman Cordivan Tab with finger separator. Sold by 3 Rivers without the Brinkman name. Can't wear them out. No grooving in the finger area. Have never used a glove that did not groove to the point of negatively affecting the release and I've tried a lot of gloves over the last 38 years.

I did'nt like any of the tabs or gloves I tried. I ended up getting a mechanix glove and glueing a strip of leather over the fingers. I experimented a bit with differrent strips but now it's perfect.

And about 20.00 too.

I have used a glove for 35 yrs. now.  Several years ago, my glove was about wore out, so I took it to a leather shop ( he made saddles, etc) and asked if he could make me a couple.  It was a challange but he did it.  He used my old glove for a pattern.  I like a thick - slick leather because of the 70 #'s I shoot.  Try your local leather maker, maybe he can help you out.
I tried a tab, but when I really needed it, it was always in the wrong position to use.

Big Shot glove.  I anchor pretty deep into the corner of my mouth and a tab seems to tear my lip up.  I like the release on the big shot and no finger numbness.
