I am stuck between "primitive" and traditional. I have used my selfbows for a while now. I finally bought a "deer master recurve". The speed is incredible. At 50# , it could shoot arrows so much faster than any selfbow I had previously made. I have been saving some cash, and I want a new toy so bad for my birthday. Why not more archery goodies. I am a little Hill obsessed, but can't get a $500 dollar longbow- not yet at least.
In the meantime, I was thinking about getting a longbow. There is a rule in life, that you get what you pay for. Well, we all are looking for the best quality for our dollar. I was looking for some suggestions for a good quality longbow, somewhere under $500.
Selfbows reguire rather precise arrow tuning, so it is not that big of a deal when making arrows. I only wish I could make a selfbow that could compare with them glass bows.

barta bow from 3 rivers built by martin, the savanna from martin, the bear montanna, are are super great bows.
One thing I can add is to keep your eyes on the classifieds here. Used bows are great way to give the quality:price ratio a big bump!
bear montana is an old reliable stand by. About as cheap as your going to want to pay. I've got it, and many other folks use it for a backup too.
Only thing I can say is with the $300 the montana costs you'd only be $200 away from the Hill. Maybe just save up considering you've already got a recurve?
Selfbows are really nice and I'd probably make them to hunt with if the arrow spine didn't change so often, and limbs follow the string.
Glass is really where it's at. Wood bows are unique but they are kinda like comparing a horse to a car. They both work but one requires alot more maintenance.
Man, you need to check out Maddog Archery.
yup maddog archery for sure he makes nice bows
Art, what's your draw length?

why not buy a hill blank? they real easy to finish--and you'll have a hill--i think they start around $350--i did one last spring for a buddy--and he's already killed two deer w/it
thats a good idea bamboo. I forgot about those. That is probably your best bet.
Sometimes you get more than you pay for. When I get ready to sell my Cooks Mtn "Elgato" It will be for a good price and whoever gets it will have a well made smooth, hard hitting longbow, that loves heavy arrows at 50#...PR
Arthur, the phrase, "you get what you pay for" doesn't mean, and never has meant, you get more when you spend more. It simply means you get what you pay for. It may be junk it may be great, but you get what you pay for. It is just another way of saying, Caveat Emptor...Let the buyer beware.
To overcome that situation, make sure you do get what you pay for by researching, or better yet, shooting the bow before you buy it. Or, at least knowing what your are getting.
the bear montana is a fine longbow. i know several folks who shoot them exclusively. of course there are others, but you might find someone who has a montana and give it a try. good luck on your search.
