Title: Fred Bear
Post by: Onesock on November 18, 2008, 08:37:00 PM
Could any of the history buffs on here tell me what kind of arrows fred shot while hunting. Did he shoot wood until aluminum/fiberglass came along and then switch to the new arrows? Greatly appreciated. Thanks

On some clip I watched (from the video section here I believe) he showed the other guy his broadheads and then said it was a fiberglass arrow.

So I guess he shot 'em all.

I have an autographed photo of Fred standing behind a BIG kodiak/grizzly bear he shot w/ a Kodiak recurve. There is a bow quiver that is full of what appears to me to be crested wood arrows.  I'm not sure what year the photo was taken but he looks to be in his 50s.

I got to visit the Fred Bear Museum in Grayling, MI- about 1967. I remember reading sbout Fred Using an aluminum golf shaft with a fiberglass shaft slid inside to shoot his African elephant--Fred figured he needed a heavy arrow for the thick hide. In the early movies I have seen, Fred is using wooden shafts.

In a book I have written about Fred and Bear Archery the author said Fred took the arrows for his hunts of off the assembly line. He was just to busy with the day to day running of Bear Archery to make his own. Also donot forget Fred was a business man and he not only promoted bow hunting/archery but Bear Archery as well. Yes there are pictures and accounts of his hunts where he used wood, alum. and fiberglass arrows. IMHO I think he would use the best he could as far as arrows go.

Fred Bear was a business man; and he was in the business of making and selling archery equipment.

So; he tried lots of different arrows and broadheads; and bow types out.

I know M60gunner is right; Fred used all kinds of different arrow materials. People asked him for their opinions on bows and arrows; and he wanted to be able to answer them from experience.

Even after he sold Bear Archery; he was a by contract; a spokesman for Bear Archery....

Fred used wood until he began playing around with fiberglass.  He was one of the first to come up with the "converta point" system where you could screw in different heads like today.  He was also one of the frst to use aluminum for arrows.  He always used what his company made for everybody else.
