Hey guys. I shot a deer last night, and when I hit him, he let out a groan. I've never had one do this before. He was quartering away. Shot him behind the shoulder and angled in forward. No exit hole. Shot looked good. But never heard a noise like that before. Can't look for him until I get off of work. Anyone had one do this before?
I've had two do this. It's almost like a death croak, let out for a couple seconds long. I've also had other deer run in at this sound.
Never heard a groan before. Sure it wasn't some kind of long grunt? I've heard that.
No, it was for sure a long groan. He did it right when I shot him. It's killing me to not be able to look for him right now. I think I may be able to leave work early. It's pretty cold here right now, so I am not too worried about the meat, but it's gonna be a tough tracking job with no exit hole.
Groan or no groan... Is this one of those huge oh my gosh Illinois bucks ??
id groan to if someone just put an arrow through my lungs
I have hit & heard deer make this sound. It is a Death groan, just like a bear would make.
Guys, I don't think he was a real monster, but a good one. I did not have much time to look him over. He came in hard and fast.
Mysticguido, I like your answer. I am praying that he is down.
That deer is down and close by, I'd say. I hit one like that, heard the prolonged groan, and the buck dropped dead about 5 seconds later.
Good luck...
I've heard it once when I shot one with a smoke pole. Almost like the death groan of a bear. One long low blaht. My dear was dead right there.
I've had it happen a few times. All deer were shot in the lungs and went down fast
Good luck with your tracking job Jon. I really appreciated your words of encouragement the evening I shot my buck.

My first deer this year made a groaning sound too. Sounds like the same kind of hit too. She was dead in less than 10 seconds.
I had never heard one make that kind of sound after being hit before either.
I had one of the does I killed this year do exactly that, but in her case the arrow was a few inches high and cut her spine completely in half (Landshark head from ladder stand), cut the artery beneath, and caught the top of one lung.
She went directly down, of course, and gave a single, long bawl/groan. Seemed more like "HEY!, What was THAT!!" than anything else. Then she went to "sleep." I was surprised to hear the vocalization.
Hope your buck decided a "nap" is in order, too, and that your tracking job will be an easy one.
Daryl
my buddy had one make a noise like your explaning. we figured it was just the last bit of oxygen leaving his lungs. im sure if you stuck a broadhead in my lungs id make some weird noise to!
what are ya using for a head? and make sure we get pics, you know how we get when we dont see pics!!! lol good luck jon
jamie
I've heart shot a few deer that let out a loud roaring type of noise when the arrow hit them.
Your in luck!!! I speak Buck, he said: Oh! poo-poo :goldtooth:
Shot a doe throught the lungs and hit the opposite shoulder blade she groaned. She went down in 75 yards. Lets see some pics when you find him.
Jon,
I shot one a loooong time ago with wheels in the rear end, not by choice- blood tracking a buddies buck- needed to finish it off- 40 yards right through the you know what. Anyway- that buck "groaned- but more of a bawl type sound"
It was something to hear- ran off about 50 yards bawling the whole way, til he fell over. Not to make light of the situation- but it still brings up some good conversation when hanging with the boys. Your shot was true- post some pics....

Guys, I'm getting nervous now. My buddy was able to go out and start tracking a little while ago. He said there was not much blood (which I kinda figured due to no exit hole) and that he lost the trail after 100 yards. Sounds like I may be doing a lot of grid searching for this one. I hate it when I don't get an exit hole. I really think the shot was a good one though. It's hard to miss when they are only 5 paces off of your tree!
I've heard that noise twice. Once was a double-lung / heart shot that took out the far side upper leg bone. He didn't go far. The other was a backstrap hit. That one ended up being killed by another hunter almost two month later. He was healed up just fine.
Exit hole or not, I think that deer is dead. I have heard that sound too for a shot deer. was a lung and heart shot.
I hit a nice buck in IA on the upper front leg bone but just below the body line in '00. Sounded like a baseball bat. Knocked the buck down and he made that loud sound you speak of and I believe it is similar to what we today call the roar or growl. It was shockingly loud. The buck hopped back up and ran off a bit, stood, and took off. Blood trail petered out and Barry Wensel found his antler in the spring.
Also had a spine hit buck in '86 make a similar noise. Hope you get that buck and get back on here with some pics, Jon.
I'd bet on that deer being dead. Good luck in finding him. If my memory serves me right, you've had a heck of a year. :notworthy:
many years ago (44) I shot a nice buck right through the heart and he made a definite"groan"
I wasn't sure of the hit at first, but he only went a short distance and took a dirt nap. Wait,
did I say 44 years ago - can I really be that old.
Yep I am ! (18) when I shot that deer.I have seen and heard many unusual sounds while hunting here
in Oregon, but that is the only deer I have ever heard groan (different than a "bawl")
Here is the update so far. I just got back from tracking. We lost the trail after 100 yards or so, but then I just picked it up again about 30 minutes ago. Unfortunately, I had obligations I could not miss so I again had to leave. I tracked for 8.5 hours so far. At the end before I had to leave I found my arrow. It had worked it's way out. Going by the amount of penetration it looks as though the arrow stopped when it hit either the offside shoulder or the bottom of the rib cage. The part of the arrow that penetrated was covered with dark red blood. For sure not a flesh wound, but we will see what happens. I for sure did not get both lungs, or he would have been closer. So far he has gone 150 to 175 yards. I will pick up the trail again tomarrow. This has been a long tracking job thus far. It has been cold here, and I am hoping that as long as the coyotes don't open him up, maybe the meat will be ok. Wish me luck guys!
oops. That should have read that I again picked up the trail an hour and 30 minutes ago.
Good luck, Jon. At least things sound promising with the latest turn of events. Hope you find him, and congratulations on the "due diligence" you have put into seeing this through to the end.
Wish I were a bit closer and I'd come help you search. Guess instead I'll just send best wishes for success from Peoria!!
Daryl

Hope you get that buck and get back on here with some pics, Jon.
Jon, I've hit a few that made a sound exactly as Bryce described.....Hope you get him bud...good luck
Sounds like maybe liver and one lung. He should be down - liver does not stop bleeding but it can take a while. Good luck in the search.
This is making me lose sleep good luck.
Heading out now. Got work off. My boss is gonna kill me after the time I have taken off. I will post the results later......but it may be late tonight.
I wish I lived near-by I'd be there helping. Good luck !
tick tock tick tock - hope he finds him !
Been thinking about you all day, hope you find him!
Hope you are dragging a deer...
Good luck!
F-Manny
good luck!!!
Hope you got him,
Hey guys, I'm back. after a total of 18 hours tracking the past 2 days I found him. Of course the coyotes beat me to it, which I kinda figured. But he is a good 4x4 in the mid 130's range. So I am tagged out for bucks. 2 pope and young deer in a season is a definite first for me! I learned a couple of valuable lessons on this blood trail. Probably the most important is that when you put an arrow into the vitals of a deer, the blood trail never really does stop, unless for whatever reason you do not kill the deer. Even when you can't see it....the blood is there. You just have to get on your hands and knees and find specks the size of needle heads. This way you at least know what trail the deer took and can establish direction. This buck made a couple of turns, and if it were not for spending hours on my hands and knees, I likely would not have recovered him. I wish I could have gotten to him before the coyotes did, but still I am very happy. Looks like I am hunting does now. Hell, I might even go pheasant hunting....I have not done that in years since I am normally in a treestand! Good luck to you guys.
By the way, the buck went about 300 yards on only one lung. I gotta tell you I am getting to the point where I don't really like quartering away shots. Seems like often you get one lung or you hit the broadside shoulder and do not get an exit wound.
Congrats on finding him!
Way to stick it out Jon...any pix?
Congrats i dont like quartering shots eather allways one lung and travel to far and lose blood. But you find them after many hours of tracking.
Congrats! Where are the pics?
Hey guys, I'll have some pics but they were taken on a film camera. Need a few days to get them on the computer. The coyotes tore him up so bad that even the cape will not be useable. I will have to get another cape.
How to stick with it Jon, good work. Too bad about the coyotes though.
David
Jon, I applaude you on your persistence and willingness to get down and dirty not to mention the patience you have shown in the recovery of that buck. You have truly honored the spirit of that animal. I have tremendous respect for you. Well done sir!

I hate the coyotes got him before you did, but I'm glad you found him. Congratulations!
Great news to read.
Congratulations for a job well done.
Hate coyotes!!! Way to hang in there!!! Look forward to seeing the rack.
Congrats and my compliments on your honesty.
Some guys would have cut off the rack, considered it the same as a "found dead" deer and kept hunting for another buck. Glad to hear you still tagged it. Can you contact the game warden and maybe get a replacement tag since it sounds like you probably lost the meat?
Good Job Jon, Way to stick it out! We have the same trouble with the yotes here in ny! one of my last kills i found the same night by using the yotes, we went back after dark and listened for them, when we heard where they feeding on the kill went in and was able to save some of the meat!
Way to go Jon. You did good.
Congrats on the recovery Jon! Cna't wait to see the pics.
Hey guys. I'm proud of my tracking on this one. It was a really tough trail. The area I was hunting hosts not only coyotes but wild dogs/coydogs as well. If you don't get to the deer quicky, they will. I still have the piece of mind knowing I made a fatal shot and that I did recover him.....even though it was not as quickly as I would have liked! He will still look good on the wall, and the memories will last forever. I'm on to the does now!
:clapper: :clapper: Great job on the follow up.
Jon, good work and great persistence.
  :clapper:
Great Job Jon,
That tracking job is something to be proud of.
 :archer:
Congrats!
As mentioned above, it is commendable that you used your tag on the animal. Many hunters would have cut the rack off and kept buck hunting. Chad
