Today was the opener of general season and it was an interesting one. Took the bow for a walk in some woods I save for this time of year because it is an escape area for the deer. I found some heavy used trails and a couple of scrapes.
On my way in I came to two different places where coyotes had killed a turkey and at one of the scrapes I found the remains of a fawn that were a couple days old. A lot of white fur spread around and a skeletal carcus missing one front leg and the head. The coyotes have been real busy the last few weeks. I think its going to be time for some predator calling come December. :mad:
Didn't see another hunter all day though. The high temps, winds and rain seems to have kept a lot of folks home today. I only saw one live deer and she wasn't in season right now so got a pass.
yup. Today is a happy day for me. Rifle season starts and the orange army of weekend warriors are out of my bow only woods. They can take them thundersticks elsewhere. :)
Lousy **** coyotes, go get em come December.
looks like a time to take out the .223 and the rabbit distress call , after that, a skin for a fur quiver :D
Opened here today too. I found a fawn a few weeks ago like the one you descirbe, only the bones were mostly separated.
I envy you guys with the bow only areas.
Not really a massacre IMHO...just nature. (Funny how PETA won't recognize it though.)
But that sure doesn't mean you can't get some nice pelts this winter. Actually I'd imagine they're already primed up in Vermont. Get to it!!!
Got a coon here in KY last night. Not sure I've ever seen/handled a coon in the "summer-pelt" but it's fur was as thick and heavy as I've ever seen...and it's just now turning cold here.

Update on the coon...as you can see by the time of this post I'm having another episode of insomnia...skinned the coon out tonight and the underbelly wasn't as full as they are in the dead of winter. Still, your up in Vermont...and probably not worried about "saving" the yotes till they'll bring prime prices. 'Get to it!!!'
PS..insomnia isn't all bad ya know. You get a lot of stuff done...when you'd otherwise be sleeping ;) I also wasn't trying to bust your chops. There's a difference between hunting and harvesting. (thought of this when I realized a friend may not have approved of "how" I got this raccon.) It was all perfectly legal but not a "hunt". It was harvested...or even 'killed' if you dare to be politically incorrect. Point is: There's a lot to be said for proper word choice...but we shouldn't take things too seriously unless we no exactly what the person meant.
