So what really is stump shooting and where do you go to do it?
the best practice next to live game
I go to a local lake that has a run down 3-D range. I walk the trails and shoot @ leaves and anything else that catches my eye. Great way to practice and a confidence builder.
must be nice.you don't stump shoot here in NWArk. as these oak stumps are like rocks, they really like to break carbons. I lived in Wash.state for a few years & can appreciate the stumps out there.
I go up in the ceders and shoot a tin can and such
that weekend warriors leave laying around
Basically plinking with a bow. Thanks I got it
Here in Illinois, you'd be stump shooting hickory and oak and walnut, which would really eat up some arrows. Do any of you use blunts?
ssamac.... check this out... I photo web documented my first stump shooting expedition a couple of months ago... incredible fun and great practice. My area is under snow for the winter now, but I can't wait till spring...

and here's another page, documenting another expedition with a variation... trash hunting:

Dick, those are great links! Thanks for sharing!
I gotta admit I'm jealous of the stump shooting opportunities you gentlemen get. I live in the city and there are shopping centers and office buildings around me. Best I have are city owned parks...but I don't think they'd look too kindly on a guy walking around with a nocked arrow. I'm actually fortunate to have a couple of target ranges within 20 miles of home. Anybody in Southern California know of a good stump shooting spot?
...or maybe I should move in with my brother in Ohio... :p
When in the back yard I'll stump shoot a tennis ball with blunts. Judos are hard to get off a tennis ball without cutting them up so use blunts.
Nice stuff Captain Dick.
I like to take a trash bag and shoot then pick up the trash slobs leave laying around in the woods.
This is wild. The trash shooting is a terrific idea. Clean up the world while you shoot! Even the state parks around here don't allow archery except the ones with ranges. One has a 3d shoot. But you have to stay on the ranges. Can't just walk the woods.

Dick, Great show. Some things don't get much better do they?

And a new species is discovered. Wild Trashes. Good to hunt, no license required.
Did my first stump shooting this afternoon and had a great time. Shot clumps of grass, bunches of leaves, even a couple of stumps. Tough to get the arrow out of these.
REally enjoyed this
Thanks
sam
Stump shooting is fun a good practice also.

basketballs are the best to me, throw them or kick them and shoot away.
I go to one of many clearcuts or just walk a logging road picking out tatgets at different distances...PR
Yes Sam use some sort of blunts, although I guess a broadhead would work. Judos, or hex heads, or a blunt that has been drilled to imitate a hex head's concave face all make great stump shooting tips. They do not bury too deeply into anything (unlike a broadhead), they are less prone to burying under grass, specially the judos and they are not prohibitively expensive.
One you get bored with just good shots, then get creative and shoot from behind stuff, below stuff, over stuff, thru stuff, and then, when you get really cocky... Bounce it off this tree and into that target !
The best part is you can shoot a zillion times a day if you wish, unlike most hunting situations.

In Missouri stump season starts in mid January and runs thru 15 September. Its good to get a group of friends in the woods to shoot arrows and B.S.
Yep lots of trophy stumps in Wa.
Got to be the best state for hunting stumps.
Hey Paul where you from? Your e-mal addy is the same as mine.
John
serg, great pic...i love that belcher longhorn..marco#78

Sure, anybody can go pick on some defenseless, four-foot wide remnants of Doug firs and cedars. ;) (I used to live in Snohomish County.) But REAL stump shooters step up to the challenge of shooting in The Granite State (and occasionally AT the granite chunks wearing mossy camo. . . :banghead: )
(BTW, the POC shafting does much better than the Doug fir on the granite, in my experience.)
Just got back to this thread... great stuff... re shooting basketballs.... Please, be careful shooting any inflated ball. I they get jammed against something, they have been known to bounce and arrow back!
Interesting to see a reference to a Belcher Longhorn. Just today was thinking about selling my Lady Longhorn. They're beatuiful bows, but mine doesn't get shot much, especially not that I've started making my own
We're having a bit of unseasonable warmth and Tuesday sun is threatened with acceptable temps up to about 4500 ft... Hmm... may have to go get some more of those stumps... especially if I get the finish on the current bow.
I think this would fit what historically was called roving. Don't have enough of a redneck sound to it though, does it? Form used to be two or more archers went shooting together and took turns picking the next target of opportunity.
Long history to this anyway.

I went stump shooting with my son today and even though the weather was bitter we had a blast. Brought some hot chocolate along which made it better. We choose to shoot trashes, and if you look hard enough, you find quite a few. We took our limit and went home. Nice afternoon.

The thing about basketballs reminded me about how I like to keep a chartreuse tennis ball in my kit to use for target practice. Just toss it out in a field, or in the woods if you are taking your bow for a walk, and shoot it where it lands.
Something to keep in mind, in many states you cannot do stump shoot on public lands. It is considered target practice and it is not allowed. So, check the regs before you try this on public lands.
Public land belongs to the taxpayers, right? OH Well
Nice day in the 50s in Illinois with sunshine and my son and I went out and shot lots of trashes in the State Park trails. Got the ok from the parkie as long as we would carry out all our trashes. Was surprised how well my field point went thru tin cans, and especially how hard they were to remove.
Pleasantly surprised how well my son shot the trashes too. This is just what he needed to get focused on accuracy. Thanks a million guys
sam
To stump hunt public land you need to be able to honestly say you are small game hunting. Carry one BH and the rest can be blunts. Squirrels and rabbits are the stated prey but in reality you are hunting those wily Trashes.
Nothing like a trash when the wind is blowing hard. They can run fast. Making a good shot on a moving trash is very exciting.
Today we hunted tin cans. On the ground, on top of a stump or rock. Whatever. Nasty little rascals when you hit them on the side and the arrow just hooks and buzzes by. This is a good time for blunts
sam
In MN "target practice" is illegal on nearly all if not all public land, whether its with a 30-06 or a 30 lb bow. there are loop holes however. there is no closed season or liscence required to hunt unprotected species in MN. therefore whenever i am stumpshooting i am actually "hunting" skunks, gophers, coyotes, and porcupines. Check the IL regs sam you might find a similar loophole. but it is unbelievable the amount of trash there is on public land. last spring i had my huge bag to carry turkey decoys, a chair, ground blind etc. there is a ton of extra room in the bag and i filled it with cans and bottles on my way out. i should have sent the state a janitorial bill :) good luck, dan.

Yes!
I'm lucky enough to stumpshoot with Serge sometimes, it's the best practice ever!
Look at that cocobolo on the Longhorn :saywhat:
F-Manny
Neat loking Longhorn.
Nice to leave the woods nicer than you found them, Dan. Never could understand the slobs the leave garbage behind in what I consider the greatest church on earth. It has to hurt to dump in the woods.
