Title: Elk from Pop up Blind ?
Post by: L. E. Carroll on November 12, 2008, 07:07:00 PM
I have read lots of great hunting stories here however, I have never seen anything concering succesful elk hunting from a pop up blind. Has anyone been succesful using a blind and if so how did you set up?

I have some low lying fields near the Washington Coast, where Roosevelt Elk regularly feed. I have patterned the elk over several years and know where they enter in the late afternoon and plan on trying a blind during the Late Season. Hopefully this will alow a good "quarting away shot" and help me stay a little drier during the heavy winter rains we get here.

Thanks for any input.  After season, I'll let you know if it worked.

Stake it down good!!  We used to hunt the late hunt up by Forks for deer and elk.  Never used a blind, wish I had.

Roosevelt elk are very patternable.

Good luck.

I haven't done it, but I have a friend who uses pop ups and has had good success with them. He puts his in a natural funnel, and has killed some nice bulls at very short ranges by using them. He is hunting private land. Don't know how it would work in a public land scenario.
Good luck!

This is a private land hunt.  Just got to get it on the ground before it crosses the fence into the next field.  { I'm hunting in the timber along the trail to the fields]

sounds like a good idea Gene, but has anyone shot thru the "shoot-thru" screen with their stick-n-string? if so how did it work out?

I have hunted elk out of my Double Bull.  I sat it near a wallow well before season.  I found the important thing was to brush in the blind with tree limbs, pine boughs, etc.  Leave just enough opening to shoot out of the netting.  If you shoot feathers, you will not have any problem shooting through the netting.  After they get used to the blind, you should get some pretty close shots.

I used one for a few days on that hunt, and even had a cow come in. But I didn't like the shot so I let her walk. The elk I took was out of a treestand along a travel route.
