Hello all. I am trying to get some shafts sorted for a 40@28 Whisperstik recurve (I draw 27ish) and so far everything I shoot (45-50, 50-55) kicks left with the exception of some 60-65 pine shafts and also some Axis 500's (which bare-shaft quite well but I prefer wood).
Could I be doing something wrong here or do the carbon bare-shaft results suggest my form is okay and this bow really needs shafts 20 pounds above it's draw weight? Is this typical of high performance recurves?
Any opinions or advice would be welcome.

recurved bows are center/pass center cut so You can get away with stiffer shafts.
are you cutting the 45-50 50-55 spine woodies down any? if you are shooting them full length (usually 32") and only drawing 27", they will have way less spine. That could be why the 60-65's bareshaft well, because at full length, their spine will be considerably less than 60-65#. I have a 45# recurve and 45-50# spine cut to 29.5" bareshaft well, and then 55-60 bareshaft well if i leave them full length... just my opinion.
You are actually drawing about 37lbs @27" so look for a weaker spine in the 35-40lb range or leave a bareshaft 45-50 long, then cut it down until it tunes properly. The extra weight will also make your bow quieter.

For reference, the shafts are all cut to various lengths. For example, the Axis shafts are about 27.25 with a 100 g. brass insert with 125 tips. The 50-55 are 27.5 to the back of the point.
I guess it would be best to start with some full length shafts and go from there, It just seems strange when I was going through some arrows and nothing was shooting well until I got into my "stiffer" spine group.

Got my new Copperhead recurve last Thurs. 60"/55# @ 29" cut past center. With 30" shafts and 175 grain head, it took GT 75-95 shafts to bareshaft. Total hunting weight with WW heads is 540 grains and 186 fps. I was shocked that I needed this much deflection!!
