Title: New Aussie Traditional Bowhunting Venture - Stikbow Hunter eMagazine
Post by: Benny Nganabbarru on November 10, 2008, 05:29:00 AM
G'day Fellows,

A fellow Aussie TradGanger from Sale (Victoria) who has far too many longbows for his own good, by the name of Guy "Gundy" Curtis, has put his blood, sweat and - well, I'm not sure about any tears (Gundy?) - into producing a free online bi-monthly eMagazine dedicated to hunting with traditional bows in Australia, from the mountain forests to the interior deserts (and anywhere else in between these two places). Gundy's drummed-up support from traditional bowhunters across our fair island continent, and has (and continues to) put in long hours as editor and computer whiz, putting it all together. The various authors contribute their articles free-of-charge, in order to promote our classic endeavour. Many of our modern-minded brethren here in Australia are being enthralled by this promotion of the fun, challenge and deadly beauty of longbows and recurves.

Anyway, feel free to check-out the website:  www.stikbowhunter.com (http://www.stikbowhunter.com)  . You'll be able to download the first edition of this eMagazine, and Gundy tells me the next edition will be out within a week.

In the current issue (Sept. / Oct. 2008), there are bowhunting adventures, product reviews, a recipe, and bowhunters' showcases.

If ever you've visited our lovely country and have a yarn or picture you'd be happy to share, I'm sure Gundy'd love to hear from you!

Thanks for checking it out, and we'll be sure to keep you posted when new editions come out.

Cheers, and all the best as you fellows get amongst the whitetails,

Ben

Glad you like it, fellows. Gundy's put his heart and soul into it. He's also informed me that he would be happy to include the odd story from places other than Australia, too. He tells me he's actually been day-dreaming about whitetail since he was a kid, so I think he'd like to see a whitetail story. Cheers, Ben

Glad you liked it, Curtis! It's funny thinking that that story wound-up in the USA. My mate Matt Wright has since well-and-truly been bitten by the traditional bug, and has sold his wheeled bows and shoots a BW longbow. He's doing good with it, too.

Thanks for the positive comments guys and Ben, as usual, thanks for the support!

I just have to finalize a knife review for the next issue and it will be available for download.

Like Ben said, if anybody has a story from across the pond they would like to include within future issues, I would be more than happy to include it.  Particularly if it involves my childhood dream of a Whitetail Buck.....   :)

Stay safe friends.

Yep, Paul, the same goats. It's a love / hate relationship with that place, as the goats are way too abundant, but the so is the heat! But, it's worth it...

I just read the magazine. Very cool, looks like a lot of work went into it.

Question. I see a lot of guys with pigs in this magazine and other sites on the net down there in Australia but I don't hear anything about how you guys cook them up. Do you guys not eat them or is how you all prepare them just such common knowledge that no one seems to mention doing it?

Andy, we do eat them, but due to some disease, we have to be careful.

I have only eaten young pigs that have been shot in a location where they have been feeding off of crop, as they seem to be clean and very tatsy as opposed to their outback brethren.

G'day Andy,

Some Aussies do eat some of the pigs they shoot, but are very selective in doing so, being more inclined to eat younger ones.

But most of the time, Aussies - even the ones who do eat pigs they shoot - will just leave them to be eaten by the native wildlife (or other pigs).

Caution must be exercised when checking a pig for its culinary suitability over here, but this isn't too difficult.

The difference between hunting in Australia and hunting in the USA is that we are basically attempting to either eradicate or limit the growth of feral species only, whereas you guys are managing native animal populations. As such, we don't have the same recovery laws - also, sometimes the environment and climate we're in makes recovery difficult or impossible.

The Aussie deer hunters treat deer very differently, with it being utilised fully even though they are feral too (they do live in more temperate parts of the continent).

Here's a link to my camel thread where I wrote a little more on this topic:

Ben

What diseases do the pigs carry and how do you tell if they have it or not? This is very interesting stuff.

I was in Darwin in 1997 and got to go to the Outback. To hot for me to live there but it was an amazing place. I was in the Marines at the time and we had an R&R port call there in Darwin for a week. I would love to go back and see it again some day not in the middle of your summer which is when I was there before  :)  I'd love to shoot a camel, that would be a riot!
