Well as some of you may know i had to sell my recurve. Well i did some trading and come up with a hickory bow that is backed with oak 60# longbow. That way im not bowless and atleast i could still hunt however I should have looked a little closer at the bow because it has a tiller problem. The lower limb bends way more than the upper and the lower limb is curved more. Can i do some sanding on the upper limb and even it out? Would this fix it? It shoots pretty good and is suprisingly fast. Like i said its 60# at 28" but i have a long draw 31" is it gonna hurt this bow to draw that far? Here is a pic.Help!
God Bless
Matt
You may have a problem if you draw it further than 28". The tiller at brace does look off. Hard to tell without seeing the bow at least partially drawn. How long is the bow?
72" long unstrung
Break out the sand paper!
Can you show a picture at full draw. That is the only way to tell how the tiller is. If one limb is out of tiller you can scrape or sand it a bit to even up the tiller. You are going to loose weight by doing so. How much weight depends on how much wood you take off.
If the bow was built for 28" and you pull it 31" you can do damage. An old adage for wood bows is; "a bow fully drawn is 9/10th broken". If it is 9/10th broken at 28", you can imagine what 31" would mean. Pat
This is not the best pic but here goes.
Tiller looks OK to me. Shoot it!!! but try to pull it less than 31"! Bend your bow arm slightly at the elbow, lean your head forward and cant the bow 45deg. That may help. Pat
IDK what pat is talking about the top limp does look stiffer, I think scraping it a bout should get the job done, no worries
I'm no expert on that type of bow (I shoot recurves), but it looks like it would have perfect tiller if you switched the string end to end. Does that bow have an arrow shelf?
Is the shelf on that bow cut out?or do you shoot off the fingers?Maybe you can just reverse the handle orientation on that bow and make the upper limb the lower limb. less work than sanding or adjusting the tiller with your inexperienced hands.
Yes it has an arrow shelf. The limbs are supose bend the same amount. Right? Should i sand the whole limb?
Matt
Pat builds and shoots a lot of these bows. I'd listen to him.
The first 6" out of the fades on the top limb is way too stiff. A little scraping in this area would even the limbs out.
If the bow shoots good for you I wouldn't wory about it.
Please resize your pics to no more than 640 pixels wide.
Nevermind just found a huge crack in the lower limb, ITS TOAST
! AAAAHHHHHH!!!! This is insane!
Is the crack running with the limb or across it. Pat
Its runing all the way across it on the lower limb and the hickory has started to seperate.......ok uncle i give,,,,i may cry. LOL!!
If you need a bow I have a ben pearson recurve 55# @ 28" I'll send ya if you give me your address.
(send me an email--brianroness@yahoo.com)
If it is on the belly it is a fret and probably caused by overdrawing and a not so perfect tiller.
