I have no trouble getting the bucks to run in to me. They just stop out of range and never come in. Today I rattled real hard. Had a tall 10 pointer run in up on the ridge. I was down in the gulley. He stayed up on the ridge looking for the fight. I waited untill he turned and I rattled again. He just kept walking and never came back. Then, a real nice 8 pointer came in hard from behind. He came right under my stand but never gave me a shot. He was behind my tree the whole time. He started to leave and crossed the creek. I rattled again, he could not see me I was behind the tree. I had the wind in my favor. He turned and looked then left. I tried estrus bleet and grunting. Neither boy ever came back. How do you get them to come in all the way?
Decoy. They get nervous when they expect to see a deer and don't.
According to your call sequences, there should have been three deer, and they saw none. Are you set up in an area of long range visibility? Try edges of thickets, where the woods transition from hardwoods to pines, fields to woods, etc. Give the deer some place to be hidden.
I have only ever rattled in two bucks. I have called in and killed numerous. I usually try to mimick a buck tending a doe. Bleat...wait a few minutes, tending grunts. I look all around as I grunt, and grunt in every direction.
I cant say anything about decoys because i have never used one....sounds like a good idea though.
I don't have any pines. I do have fields.
Mental telepathy.......
Snort/wheeze call. I couldn't believe how well this works. Do a search as there was a thread about it last year.
ishiwannabe, sumed it up! Remember, Deer are not stupid, especially BIG BUCKS. They come in or pass through an area they know if there is a deer or not. A Decoy works as well as thick brush, where they have to look for the deer. Main thing is they didn't wind you. so, the same are will work. Next time after Rattling, when you see the deer coming in stop. He should stop aways off, they just tickle them together, should pull him in.
