After having a mental lapse of good judgement, I fell under the forces of the Darkside and started shooting a wheelie again over the summer.
I've since put the wheelie down and have put all my attention back into traditional bows.
I have an older BEAR POLAR recurve and a WHISPERSTIK longbow and while reading/looking at all the great hunting pictures/stories here recently, It looks like a lot more game has been taken with the longbow.
This has my curiosity going and I wanted to know what everyone here is shooting so PLEASE post what you are shooting/hunting with and pictures would be GREAT!
THANX
i shoot longbows exclusively.....but they have recurve style grips so they would be considered hybrids by most!
Longbows mostly...Pronghorn and White Bison. I like the lighter weight to carry, how quiet they shoot, and how they can hang from the tiniest little branch on a tree.
I do have a Schafer recurve that I intend to take out late in the season. During the meat of the season, I like to shoot only one bow.
Longbow-Bone
Recurve.
Only have 1 deer to my credit .....browning wasp 45#
Killed more carp then anything else shakespeare Necadah 40#
A backyard squirrel or two ...Herter's perfection mag 50#. Was a wonderful bow but a piece of the limb delaminated
Current bow is from Lewis Hollow Archery 46#. Haven't killed anything with it yet.
Longbow mostly. Just something about the longbow that seems right
I forgot to mention that even though both my bows are 45#@28" the BEAR is easier to shoot and a little more accurate for me. Is it because it being a recurve or something else?
THANX
Longbow
One recurve and one longbow. The recurve is my favorite of the two.
All of the above. I like the qualities of all style bows so I tend to shoot them all.
Shot recurves for years, but all I own now are longbows. I've been trying to hunt with nothing but my new Apex Predator R/D, but find myself migrating back to the straight longbows to make meat. The last four critters I've killed this year were all with straight longbows. These are most recent.

Longbows - Silvertips & Robertson Stykbow - for Whitetails
Windauer Silvertips for everything else
no pics - I am digitally challenged

Both. Why limit yoursef to just the one! :D
Shot recurve for about 12 years and switched to long bow this past year. I'm really liking the long bow.

Love longbows, but I shoot both. I like simple D shaped longbows the best.
D style longbows
i shoot any bow as long as it has a string but i draw the line at wheel bows as i wont shoot em. :wavey:
Shoot both but tend to pick up my curve more this season than the last several, have a killed a deer or two with both styles so am happy with whatever is is in hand.
I have used both. Last year it was an Assenheimer recurve, this year it's a Firefly longbow, next year???
I shoot both, but predominantly longbow! ;) :D
I don't own a recurve...yet.
All longbows of one sort or another. Northern Mist Hill style, Robertson mild R/D, and Shrews "The Mini Longbow".

For my first 15 or so years, I was shooting the only bow I owned - 55# @ 28 DH recurve.
Now, I'm shooting the only functional bow I own (partly because I really like this bow and partly because the DH died thanks to crappy string that broke - long story). My current only bow is a HH Halfbreed (named Chili Maker) that pulls 60# @ 29.
Pictures - why certainly!

As bows with wheels... I'm not sure I understand. Do you mean the bow was so heavy to carry, that you need wheels to cart it around (like a ballista or something)?
:bigsmyl:
A Mohawk,a Horne's Traditionalist and a Lewis Hollow 3 piece takedown hybrid longbow.
Recurves. All of them Bears from the 60's and 70's.
I shoot both, but tend to preder the recurve for some reason.
i shoot both, i prefer my 52" 45#@28 martin rebel recurve. I have a 55# martin " the stick" longbow and a 50# PSE Legacy R/D longbow as well. They all feel good but the little 45# short recurve is just right for me. :archer:
Longbows!
Longbows are cool and light and romantic and all that jazz but I can't shoot them consistently worth a poot, so I shoot recurves. Specifically recurves with a medium grip and plenty of riser mass. I do have one longbow but it is a Bob Lee three-piece so I'm not sure it qualifies.
Have both, but mostly shoot longbows...Kanati's specifically.
Shot recurves in the 80's but its only been longbows the last 18 years.
I mostly shoot a Wesley Special Hill Bow 65# at 28" draw, but I also like the Kolomi from Lynn Harreslson at 54# at 28" draw. I understand your fascination with the long bow. I can't explain it but just like it over the recurve. Part of it is simply that Howard Hill has long been a hero of mine so I wanted to shoot a bow like he had. Also, I shoot wooden arrows.
Hi Guys,
I shot a Bear Kodiak Magnum (50# @ 28") from 1972 until two years ago when it was damaged in a move. I bought a Tomahawk (50# @ 28") as my replacement. I enjoyed the Kodiak, and am wistful as I see it in the closet now and again, but I have no complaints about the R/D Tomahawk.
You probably need to shoot both styles and chose the one you like the best. I'd suggest going to one of the big Trad events where you have a bunch all in one place!
this one was with my Morrison longbow

might take the curve this weekend though
Josh
I mostly shoot a Wesley special Hill bow & a Kolomi from Lynn Harrelson. I also have a Deathwish by Steve Welte that I like. I shoot wooden arrows - cedar.
El Cheapo, my homemade TD longbow - guess you could call it a hybrid RD bow.

First doe this year:
after going a few yrs without one I'm back shooting a Pronghorn longbow...PR
I got a couple of recurves and just had one built and it will be here next week but,
I really like my longbows better and tend to shoot them more.
This year I'm hunting with a 1-pc. Leon Stewart longbow. Recent years, Hickory selfbow and 1-pc. Pronghorn longbow. All excellent bows.
Longbows for me, but "short" longbows, I like those the best, 58" and under.
I've only this year got what the longbow shooters meant when they talked about experiencing the beauty, romance, and history of shooting a longbow. I can only go so far in the R/D department though and still obtain this feeling. Hybrids are great but they don't grab me in the same way. 64" or better, classic "D" shape when strung, and "Howard Hill type grip.

Been shooting longbows and recurves for 48 years. All depends on how I feel that day.
Never owned a wheelie, never will!!! Shot one once, they just ain't right. Never touched one again! :archer:
Have both but mostly shoot my Hill bows these days. They're just more fun to shoot! Ken
Longbows.
have both, shoot the recurves all the time though. For some reason (grip?) I cant shoot the longbow to save my life????
I had a compound years ago but I didn't like the training wheels much.
Then I got a Bob Lee Hunter in Camo - 63#@28" 60" and it was nice - sold it to my daughters boyfriend. I think he is doing a sneak on some brocolli right now :biglaugh:
I have since bought a 66" 54# @ 28" ACS longbow....very sweet bow....very fast..hits as hard as my Bob Lee.

Now I have my Super Shrew Classic 56" 58# @ 28". I am still waiting for some arrows and silencers for it. SO I can't really say too much yet. I tried shooting the arrows for the ACS but they don't have enough spine. So I am itching to get the right arrows for her now.
I think I like recurves and longbows, but I think I like the lightness of the longbow more, but it's a toss up at this point.

Eight recurves and two longbows. I shoot and hunt with the curves mostly, more consistant with them.

Love them longbows!

Flatwoods Custom longbow.
There is another type besides a LB? :saywhat:
Recurves, one piece and takedown models. (http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff82/ygrant87/Picture006.jpg) (http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff82/ygrant87/bowdoc08022.jpg) This is three of my favorites. Longbows are cool-I just haven't shot them much and at this stage of the game probably won't. I don't change much. Grant
I shot a recurve. Kinda different though I aim the thing like a big dog on a small tree. I stringwalk. this a Brackenbury Drifter 56#@28" 60". Actually it is one of a kinda. the only Drifter with a deflexed riser.
http://sites.google.com/site/stringwalkerbowhunter/bracksw
ya see the two red nocks on the string. if ya look real close under the nocking points ya will see a dental floss nocking point looking thing. i draw and release the string from that point for a 15 yds shot. I hold the BH on the exact spot I want to hit. I gap with the point for distance but it will stay on the kill zone for any distance I shoot.
rusty -non-tradtional recurve shooter- Craine
2 longbows, a one piece and a 3 pieces
F-Manny
started with wheels, tried recurve, gone to longbow, don't think i will ever go back.

I like the curves of a recurve...
When I first got hooked on traditional archery, I decided that I wanted to experience as many different kinds of traditional bows as possible (and own each type). I've enjoyed shooting and hunting with numerous longbows and recurves, though currently I'm shooting a recurve. I think I personally shoot the recurve better, but that doesn't mean that I won't pick-up a longbow from time-to-time. Later down the track, I'll have to hack-out my very-own selfbow, too. They're all good!
Primarily recurves, own a couple of longbows, but just haven't been able to get the feel for being real consistent with them yet.
I'm only into one piece recurves - cause they look sexy. Longbows are far too straight. :D
I Started with 'Curves, then WHEELS, NOW A LongBow Or ReCurve!! I Like Them All
I enjoy both but am primarily a 'curve shooter. I tend to shoot them a little more constently. I started w/ a recurve 40 years ago and I guess nostalgia has a little to do with my preference.
