Title: Arrow Weight
Post by: dcolavito on November 05, 2008, 04:15:00 PM
Hi Folks

After reading Dr. Ashby's work for the first time, It seems like a heavier arrow is something I should look into.  Any advice on my questions below is much appreciated.  If it's preferable to contact Dr. Ashby directly, and if his contact info is available, I'm glad to do that.

Thanks much !!
Dave

1. Does anyone know how heavy an arrow is needed for bone breakage in White Tailed Deer? Same question for Elk?

2.In trying to achieve the above weights, does it make more sense to experiment with aluminum shafting and weights, or is it better to look into wood?

I'm shooting a Bear 48 Magnum, 55# at 28", my draw weigth is 28 1/4". My current arrow weight is 435 grains with 125grain Magnus (non-vented, single blade, double edge)and 2113 aluminum.  Seems like it's more responsible for me to go to a heavier arrow, though I've been pleased with the performance of my current set up.

Mucho grats !!!

If you're not having any problems downing deer with your present setup, stay with it. Your arrow weight is light for a 55# bow (435 grains) which comes out to 7.9 grains per pound, compared to my setup of 42# shooting a finished arrow weighing 550 grains which comes out to a little over 13 grains per pound. I prefer a heavy arrow over a light arrow because I find shooting a heavy arrow makes my bow whisper quiet upon arrow release. For me,it's "quiet" over "speed" since all of my shots are mostly between 15-20 yards.

I agree way light 10 gr lb min 12 grlb better yet Oh so Quiet and oh so deadly  that is if a clean bone breaking is what you are trying to do ! You cannot beat cx heritage shafts couple them with 100gr brass inserts and 145gr and up broadhead now you have a good heavy set up that will also quiet your bow good luck jar loose and buy some new arrows    :knothead:
