Title: Guess I'll just have to get up early
Post by: Bill Carlsen on November 04, 2008, 01:34:00 PM
Just like last year....when Nov. rolled around the bucks moved thru our property during the mornings. I went in this AM to clear a new trail to the stand from a logging road that should give me a quieter walk in and an approach that would allow me to skirt the obvious trails they are using to approach. I have never been a morning kind of  hunter but it looks like I need to make an effort. The camera's time had not been changed so they were their an hour earlier than what the readout says. I should also shoot a few arrows this afternoon. The Cuddeback is about 8 yards in front of my stand.

That's two rugged looking guys.

I'd set my alarm for an early wakeup if I were you.

My wife has had two close encounters with the smaller one...furthest away in the pic. She had him at about 10-12 yards and let him walk because of a few limbs that caused her to think twice. He slowly walked straight away from her and turned broadside out of her range. Two nights ago he snuck up behind her and she got her first wiff of a rutting buck. He stopped just over her left shoulder (no shooting lane....lots of branches for concealment), turned and walked away. The bigger of the two bucks is "new", I think. His rack looks bigger than any of the other four or five we have photos of.

On top of it all I had this doe in range late afternoon yesterday. We played a chess game for 45 minutes before she offered me a 20 yard shot. I was so stressed from our encounter I had a headache, the shakes, buck fever....call it what you will....but I knew the time to shoot her was not at that moment. She knew something was amiss and finally walked off. Once my blood pressure got back to normal and my eyes functioned once more I got down and went home....last shooting light was 5 minutes. When I checked my camera this AM she came back an hour later, with her family and a spike buck. I still have a headache!!!!

Two seasons ago I posted a pic of a big doe and I think this is her. I posted her pic and asked you guys what you thought she might weight. We can still guess if you would like. My stand is right across the swamp where I got the photo last time. Last year I had her under my stand for 15 minutes but I had already used my doe tag. Things are starting to pick up. I even found a scrape/rub under my backup stand.

Found the photo of the big doe from two seasons ago. Think they are the same deer?

I have to add, NH doesn't have the deer density  or antler quality found in other areas, but the herd is healthy and they are smart. They make you a better  hunter once your head clears.

Ken: You  have to see her in "real time" to really appreciate her. It isn't just big bucks that get one rattled. By the way, how is your "peeiing in the scrape experiment" going. I totally forgot to pee in the scrape I found today. Hope I won't need to reconsider doing it after tomorrow morning.

Rod; If I connect I will be happy to send you a pic with the Arrow Master. Chances are that I will...simply because Laura is in NY with her dad for two days. I will be alone. The property is remote. No one to take a pic. It is going to be warm so I will have to hurry to get it hung and skinned...by myself. So, even though the odds are against me, circumstances are with me...it always seems to happen that way. I will, however, do my best. I'll go put the camera in my pac after I finish typing.

Ken: I think the Cuddebacks take the best pics. i  have two and will probably get a couple more before next season.  I do have an observation this year. We have numerous pics of some very nice bucks. However, unless they are day time photos we only get one or two pics of the same deer at any one time, except for the does. I am concerned that the flash bothers them. I did a little experiment last week. I put a bag of apples out of range of the camera and all of them were eaten in a day. Near the camera they get eaten more slowly. I can't prove it's the flash and this is the first year (of 5 or 6) that this seems to have happened. Perhaps the bucks just like to keep moving. Since last week we have had bucks come in as close as 10 yards of our stands right at dark. They approach the baits and move on undisturbed (they haven't busted us, yet). My guess is they are sight checking feeding areas for does. Maybe it's time for my decoy to make an appearance.

Dang man when the deer are close you gotta remember to breath.  I had a monster hog under 5 yds one time on the ground and was trying to get a shot.  I realized I had been holding my breath and the black was coming in from the edges when I finally shot and missed.  Ever since I have told myself "BREATH",

Mike
