Say guys I just got a Bob Lee Signature 64" - 60# at 28". My draw is 26" Going to get some Heritage arrows. Should I leave them long or cut them to 27" and then set them to my bow? Have never done this and would like some help. Anybody out there have a short draw like mine and if so what set up do you use on arrows?? THANKS
It depends on how much weight up front you want to shoot. What Heritage shafts are you thinking of...150s, 250s...? You are shooting 54# at 26". Is the Bob Lee a cut to center bow? If so you can shoot a stiffer arrow. You may want to try the 150s which are equivalent to 78# spine weight. I shoot the 250s out of a 55#@28" recurve. I have them cut to 29.5" with 100gr. brass inserts with 125gr tips for 225gr up front. The 250s spine out to 84#. If you want less weight up front go with the 150s.
I would not just cut a carbon arrow to a certain length before shooting them.You need to pick what weight of point or head you want to shoot and tune and trim from there.Your bow is cut past center and should be easy enough to tune arrows to fit you and the bow.Like said you can most likely shoot 150's or 250's depending on how heavy of an arrow you are looking to end up with.There are alot of ways to tune a carbon arrow.
Thanks snag. Think I should cut them to 27.5 or leave them long? I want to go with 125 gr tips. Will they work with the 150s or do I need to go to the 250s. Thanks for your help - Hard Head -
I shoot a Pronghorn long bow (60", 54# at 28 draw). My draw length is 25". I started out with 250's, 100 grain brass inserts and 145 grain point. I have to shoot them full length to get good arrow flight (also use 5", 3 fletch parabolic). I have recently changed to 150's and same insert/point. They shoot good at 30" length... better than the 250's. Being a novice, when I first got my 250's, I cut one down to 31" and another to 30". The flight was horrible.
That is the arrow I roll with in my ACS 66" 57# @ 28" and have started out at 31" only to settle on just over 30". I found a little length straightened up real nice.
If you start by choosing a specific shaft, then you can pick a specific point weight or a specific shaft length but not both.
If you choose a length then you will need to test different point weights to get good flight.
If you want to shoot a specific point weight, then you need to try different shaft lengths (start long and cut shorter until you get good flight) to find the correct flight.
I'm shooting a 250 cut about 30", 56lb recurve, with ff, 165 grains out front. I too draw short - 26 3/4" - but I wanted a longer arrow to help bring in my point-on. Whether you do 250 or 150, be sure to trim just a little at a time as you tune them. I was a little surprised at the difference 1/2" makes. Best thing I did with this batch was buying one shaft of each size before I bought the dozen and slowly trimming each one down to see what spine/length/weight combo I needed.
I would probably go with the 150. My Shrew is 53-54 lb at 29.5", my 150s are 31" with 50gr insert and 180gr BH. Arrow weighs 580gr, they fly great.
