Don't know anything about buffalo hunting.  The American Bison we have here in Oklahoma are not of a huntable population, but I can't imagine taking one of them down w/ a stone point.

Before modern points were made and probably with weaker self bows too.     Pat

Yea Pat, and better trackers than me  :)

There is no reason why a head couldn't be made to kill one though.

Plenty of bison have been killed with stone points in modern times.

Yup, and countless thousands before that!

There is an ENORMOUS difference between a bison and the true buffalos(water and cape). I am sure you could kill a buffalo with a stone point, IF you had poison on it. I would bet that in most if not all African countries it would be illegal and anyone that tries it on a water buffalo should have their head examined. I can tell you for fact that a VERY high percentage of buffalo that are "bowkilled" have some very large bullet holes in them. Jay Massey told me a story once of his quest to kill a moose with a stone head and finally getting everything perfect and having the arrow BOUNCE off the side of the bull moose and nearly hit him on the return flight. Try that on a buffalo and nobody will see any humor in it I guarantee.

not feelin it on Buffalo - I think "stone" heads are overrated - put a bunch of guys using stone points on hogs that were 1'10'th to 1/20th the size of true buffalo and i was not impressed. We find heads all the time - and many of them obviously were not used on arrows - I think spears and ATLATYLS were used much more than modern people realize. At least on big game.

I will back Cory on this one.  Anything much thicker skinned than deer and I have a hard time seeing a stone head being very effective.  I know there are a lot of successful kills on deer with stone, but again, with an animal as tough as Buffalo I just don't think so.

I've never hunted buffalo of any flavor (hope to, though!), but I do know a bit about stone points.  As with modern steel broadheads, there's the good and the bad.  If you ever get to use a properly made stone point out of good material that's been hafted well, you might have a different opinion of their effectiveness.

Having said that, I agree with Cory's opinion of points in NC.  For the most part, the material was pretty poor and the points reflected that.

Whoops... My bad..

I saw the topic but after reading a few of the replys, my brain switched from "Buffalo" to "Bison"  :knothead:

Rick McGowan is right on this one for sure.

American Bison is one thing but, African Cape Buffalo or any of the Asian Water Buffalo are definately not stone point game.

if anyone could make a stone head worthy of Buff it would be Woody (knife river)

but i think there are still to many factors strongly against you.

let me know when your gonna try Clint ill come film   :D

I've seen the arrows custom made for buff and if you had a 1500 grain arrow with a quality stone head from a heavy bow, it could be done I bet.  Or you could shoot them in the guts and track them.  Might be a little danger in it though.  that's how the abos probably would have done it with a bow.  But, in all likelihood they would have used a spear right  :)

Be careful Clint.

I've seen several buff that were shot in the guts with arrows and were still alive DAYS later, but they knew what caused the pain and they were just waiting for the chance to return the favor.........

i'm going to have to seriously look into doing this. won't be for a few years though. i've got to learn how to make a bow, a big bow, learn how to knapp and make primitive arrows. lots & lots of practise. many years of preparation. defininatly not something to be entered into lightly. might have just become a 'before i die' goal. this is going to be good!

before you all call me mad, (you will anyway)LOL!   :knothead:  a very great deal of equipment testing would be happening to see if it is even possible to get it all up buff tuff standard. and if it doesn't, it won't be happening.
please don't think that i would just go out and shoot pieces of wood with rocks on the front of them and hope it kills a buffulo. as i said, many years of preparation away. to me the thought of a primitive buff kill is too exciting to not at least see if it might be possible.

I think that after you put some testing and investigation into this you will decide its something that you don't want to try. I've seen a lot of arrows(bullets too), shot into water buffalo and I figured out very early on, that penetration isn't the only thing, but without enough of it, NOTHING else is going to matter and the list of STEEL broadheads that work well on buff is very short.
