Title: Short, light draw recurves anyone?
Post by: LATradHunter on October 29, 2008, 10:21:00 PM
Hey fellow tradgang-ers!  I test shot a 45#@28 (i draw 28), 52"AMO Martin Rebel recurve.  Im 5'10, 155lbs and by traditional standards this bow should be too light/short for me  :help:  ...but it shoots great and is comfortable for me. I wound up buying it and its a sweet shootin little bow. Im mainly using 29.5" 45-50# cedars with 125gr zwickey 2-blade.  I also have some 29.5" 2117's and some carbons and they shoot pretty well too.  Do any of you have a preference to a light draw/short bow? i dont think it will, but will drawing 28" on such a short recurve have negative affects down the road? Any advice is MUCH appreciated...  :)

Many, many, many deer have been taken with Bear Kodiak Magnums in that draw weight.  I have my fathers, which itself has a few tick marks on the handle.  Only draw back to a short bow is that if you have flaws in your draw, or release, you'll see it in your arrow flight/impact.  Other than that your where you need to be if you like it.  Tim

I have always liked short bows, I have fallen in love with them since I have started hunting from POP-UP Blinds.

The major problem of us oldtimers shooting the short bows back in the sixties wasn't due to the fact that the bow was less accurate, it was due to the lack of tuning knowledge that we have now. I would venture to say that most were not tuned, they were shooting the wrong arrows, or they were drawing 29 or more inches.  Those things described me then too!

I am not the worlds greatest shot, but short bow scores on 3D and game for me are about the same.  If the bow shoots great for you, don't get hung up on the length, thank God and shoot to your hearts content.

The major draw back is in the area of finger pinch. In most cases, if the draw is not more than 27 - 28 inches 52 inch bows are no problem.

I shoot a Herter's perfection 46" 55#.Tiniest recurve I could find. I'm 6'3 230lbs. I normally draw 31.5'' This small bow stops at 29" So I shoot it at a 28" draw. I end up holding 52#. It stacks up quick but that really doesn't bother me. Just like any bow you get used to it. I just feel the small size is worth dealing with a little discomfort.
My fingers got pinched, but you grow calluses and life is good again. I love it. It looks like a kids bow. You can shoot it sitting down with the limbs vertical!!
Rodney Wright Archery makes a clone called a Stalker 46 I believe.
Pete Ward did a review of one a while ago. It worked for him.

Forgot to mention the Herter's 46" takes a 40" ACTUAL  length string so it ends up being quite a bit shorter than the Bear 48" I think the Bear takes a 44" string.

I've got one of Rodney Wright's Stalker.  Great shootin' little bow.  Only draws 28", but that's fine with me.  It reminds me of a good plinkin' gun.  Just fun and easy to shoot.
