was walking out of my stand tonight when all of a sudden i heard wind though feathers and next thing i know an owl knocked my bow out of my hands scared the crap out of me i had 4 arrows in my bow quiver with white dip and 2 white feathers it must have seen the movment and thought it was super from now on im using a cover on my feathers lol thought i would share and get a laugh
a couple times know they swerved at the last secound when i moved. usally after my string silencers or fletching.
i think i would have craped my pants!! :biglaugh:
I was buzzed by a great gray owl once (big frigger) and I had a cool little eastern screech owl (or possibly a northern saw-whet - it was dark) perch in the tree right next to me a couple of weeks ago.
I've never been attacked by one though.
On the 4th, a house wren perched on my arrow for a bit and sang at me - close enough? :-D
yea he just sat on the ground for like 5 seconds on my bow lookin at me lol
About 12 years ago, my dad was sitting on stand an hour before shooting light and had an owl swoop in and attack his face. The scratches were about 3" long. I usually get buzzed(within 4 feet of my face) anywhere from 2-5 times a year. It always scares the heck out of me!
Been swung at on at least 4 occasions by barred and gray owls. Kinda crazy. Had a pair take turns at me in a ground blind. After I swung my bow at one the other would swoop in on me. Had a big Gray in Colorado take multiple swings at me before a self defense move convinced him to find something smaller to mess with.
Hence the name: owlbait.

I got hit in the face by one about a week ago before daylight.I was playing a game on my phone about an hour before daylight,i guess the light it was putting off caught its attention.WHAMM!! I was hit directly in the face.I was dang near knocked out of the tree and got a nice mark starting above my right eye extending down my face.Truth be known I am not sure if it was an owl or a hawk.But it whacked the heck out of me....
I had a battle with one back in my Chicken fighting days, but never hunting. the horned owls here get huge and and at night they aint scared of nothing. they can hurt ya.

I've had a very large great horned owl swoop within inches of me and the thing is they are so quite it really startles you...I've had a little screech owl perch about 2 feet from me while in a tree stand..pretty cool...I love owls..We have a owl near our house that you can hear every night...with a very low ..HOOT..HOOT...HOOT...

Had a screech owl attack my string silencer as I was pulling my bow up to the stand about 3 weeks ago.
Also had a great horned owl come out of the trees directly into the windshield of my 3/4 ton GMC one morning, pre-dawn, talons out-stretched. My hunting buddy ducked, then sat up and said " that owl must have some big ones if he's willing to take on this truck".
Once had a great horned owl go after the tassel on my stocking cap once (scared me to death), and I had a snowy owl try for the Union 76 ball on my radio antenna (he didn't fare so well, as he missed and hit the canopy of my pickup truck).

I got hit in the back of the head one time walking out of a hollow right at dark - I had just roosted a turkey. It knocked my cap off and scared me big-time! I checked my head for a few minutes feeling for blood, but escaped unharmed. WHEW!
A husband of a friend of mine from high school days had his eye basically removed by a big owl. Never heard it coming of coarse. He was covered and it must've caught the glint of his eye. Think they saved the eye but he can't really see out of it anymore.
Once by an owl and once by a sharp shinned hawk...Both were going after my mustash! Blocked both with my bow. :) ....O.L.

i used to have a big white barn owl i took dead chickens to when i was a kid...scared the hell outta me when that head spun around :scared: :scared:
I was once elk hunting with my Dad. We were watching the edge of a meadow when we hear "whoosh whoosh whoosh" and all the sudden a goshawk takes my Dad's his hat off his head. He looks at me and says, "Now I know what a mouse hears right before he dies!"
A friend was playing with his finger-tab on the stand when an owl grabbed his hand and about took him out of the tree.
Another time I had an owl land close to my tree at about dark. I ran my hand up and down my leg to see what he'd do. He zoned in on my hand in an instant and flew right at me, I stood up at the last second and he veered off. It was cool but I honestly about fell from the tree trying to deter him.
buzz dived my a mad momma great horned when I climed the tree to her nest as a kid. Raised a couple of orphaned great horned owls also and turned em loose when they were grown,mean buggers.
Had a kite in my box stand onemorning on my lease in Texas,never did figure out how it got in there but had been in there a few days, let it out and it was fine.

I was in a tree stand waiting for daylight when a Horned owl swooped down at my head. Almost fell out of the stand. I guess at the last second, he or she figured I wasn't breakfast. I had a cap on w/ the fur ear flaps. I don't wear that cap anymore !! What a rush.....
Yeah had ones wings hit me in the face as it passed over the top of my noggin. I liked to have jumped outta that 20+' treestand that evening! Jeez! talk about catchin ya off guard os they are silent in flight.

It seems to happen to me at least once every season. On at least two occasions it cost me getting shots at deer.
Last year I had a small hawk go for my eyes while I was in my ground blind. Pretty freaky to see a pair of talons and 2 big yellow eyes only inches from my face. He realized some thing was wrong at the last second and brushed past my head.
Several years ago I hung my hunting pants up by the suspenders on the front porch to "air out" over night. The next morning at o'dark-thirty as I was stepping into my pants to hit the woods again a small bird, which had decided to roost in my pants for the night, came fluttering up and out! HOLY MOLY! :scared:
I don't know who was scared the most, me or the bird, or the dog. The bird was squeeling, I was yelling choice profanities, and the poor dog was yelping after he banged his head on a piece of patio furniture trying to get out of the way! I fell off the porch into the holly bush (ouch!), rolled onto the ground, and got mud all over me because it had been raining.

yup...calling coyotes at night, I had one swoop in, hit my head, took my hat-some hair-and all my dignity at the moment.....let out a squeal like a little girl, I did :D
Middle of nowhere in Colorado, I had an owl dive on me. Not sure what he was after, but he came within a foot or so of my head. Never heard a thing, either. The only reason I even knew it was there was I saw a shadow on the ground.
Ive had both owls and hawks take a run at me. Once while on stand moose hunting I had a kestrel land in a jackpine 20yrds away. He watched me real close and then launched at me, I had to swat him with my bow.
I have been buzzed on at least 2 occasions by some type of raptors. Since I am not familliar with the diffrent typs of Hawks, Falcons I have no clue what type of bird it was. Must have been going after a finger tip(I cut some of the tips off the gloves) or something else cause I could actually feel the wind from it's wings as it changed course at the very last second.
My sone Andrew was with me this season sitting in a blow down 12 yards away from me reading a book and he claims he was buzzed by an owl. I never saw it or heard anything untill he wispered to me about it.
Nearly,, just last week.A barred owl was squirrel hunting when he took notice of my beedy eyes .peering from within my face mask.I waved at him to let him know I was the wrong kind of rodent.
Had them chase us out of the hay barn back in the days when they still made rectalgle bales and you hand stacked them in the barn after baleing and loading trailers all day..
and roost in the limbs over our ground stands too,,they are LOUD at 2 yards!
Two years ago while on stand- sharp shinned hawk swoops in and lands about 12 feet away. He's peering at my eyes- just visible through my fask mask opening- next thing I see is talons headed my way FAST- luckily I was holding my bow and blocked him with my limb!!

I sometimes owl a few times, right at dark when I'm going to climb down. I've found that seems to make any deer in the immediate area leave without spooking them to badly. One evening I had to set a little late due to deer eating on white oak acorns under me. When it was full dark I finally started owling pretty loud. About the third or fourth time a big owl almost took my head off. Not sure what I said to him, but he defenitley took offense.
I have had owls swoop close to me on numerous occasions while in treestands, but they usually veered at the last second. On one occasion an owl hit my hand that I was holding my bowstring and knocked arrow with. Another time I brought my bow up to protect myself and an owl hit my bow about six inches in front of my face. I had one owl that for a couple of years that landed two or three feet from one of my stands several time each year while I was in it. Twice it flew from the limb next to me and caught a field mouse.
Not me but I have seen Turkey hunters in spring get stitches in top of head. This still playes in my head every year I shock turkeys...
Several yaers ago I was hunting from a cedar tree in a thicket. A buck was feeding about 10 yards in front of me--head on. I was waiting for him to turn broadside. I was in full camo including headnet and gloves. My bow quiver with barred turkey feathers was hanging behind me. I caught some movement coming from above and covered my head. A Great Horned Owl landed on a limb about 2 feet from my head on my right side. Seconds later I ducked again as a second owl landed on my left. I kept glancing apprhensively at the big birds who had their beady eyes trained on me. Fortunately, the buck turned broadside and I yanked my bow back to my anchor and sent a shaft through his rib cage. At my motion, the owls simply lifted off without a sound and I was left wondering if the event had really happened. A feather spiraling to the ground convinced me it had.

I didn't shoot it, I just walked around the tree he was in several times until his head unscrewed and fell off. :help:

I've had that happen often when predator calling. Hawks will hover above you and then dive in. Had an owl coming in staight to the face and had to wave my arms to scare him off.
Years ago, I was on a tree stand, camo bow, camo shafts, camo me and a bright shiney broadhead. I fell asleep (come on it happens). I woke up with the feeling something was watching me. I looked up just in time to see an owl launch silently off a limb about 40 yds away. He was locked in on that shiney broadhead. I waved him off just before he hit it. I can not imagine the mess if he had hit that broadhead while I was asleep.
A couple years ago I was sitting beneath a tree in the pre-morning darkness. On my way in I heard a barred owl hooting. Continued to hoot while I sat down then all was quiet.
Some time goes by and I couldn't see much if anything when all of a sudden I sense/see a shadow in front of me coming fast. I raise my hands up and hear the swoosh of his wings.
Scared the heck out of me. I had a full facemask on and wasn't moving anything but my eyes as I listened to the night sounds. Only thing I can think of is he saw my eyes bouncing around and figured they were a little critter.
I shudder to think what would've happened had he connected.
I was using a metal detector right at dusk and wearing headphones and an owl hit me in the back of the head. Knocked me off my feet.

This year on a morning hunt, after day light I had a small hawk try to attack me 5 different times that morning in a tree stand. I finaly got down and moved, and the hawk did not bother me. I told my son of the experience and he told me he was attacked in the similar area 2 weeks previous. No fur hat or anything in fact it was youth hunt in Wisconsin so all bowhunters had to wear orange on the upper half of body -- strange any one else attaked by hawks?Thanks Jerry
