Title: Pickin out arrows
Post by: TimRadke on October 27, 2008, 05:57:00 PM
Hello all!  My new RER should be done this week, so i have to make some decisions...

My biggest is this - I was planning on going with carbon arrows, or maybe even the grizzly stiks...but i have this nagging feeling that I "should" go with wood.  Wood is cheaper, prettier, and traditional, but carbon is more consistent, more durable, etc.  Carbon also has the convenience of getting heads for it anywhere versus having to scramble to find glue-ons...

So, what advantages/disadvantages am I overlooking?  Someone please talk me into one or the other!

I'll post pics when I get the bow (of course)!

I'd go with wood, but to tell the truth carbons are in fact CHEAPER, imho...you break less, especially if you find yourself stump shooting often...

Carbons don't lose they're straightness and tend to be straighter to start. More weight consistent. Easier to front load for better penetration. Can be found most anywhere if you need replacements on a trip/hunt. They are cheaper than woodies new in a lot of cases now and are more durable usually so leads to even more savings.

Yep, everything Vermonster said.  I think you will find your XR really LOVES carbons!

I love wood because I enjoy making arrows and adding my own personality to them.  They are just cooler!     But I can't really think of any practical advantage they offer beyond asthetics.  Maybe a little on price if you make your own, but like Dave said, carbon is so much more durable that they still end up cheaper in the long run.  (Unless you are prone to losing them before they break!  :knothead:  )

I'll side with John Kennedy and Ron La Clair. "We do this not because it is easy, but because it is hard".
wood is where the challenge and the rewards are at when it comes to arrows.
Kinda like trad archery and archery in general, go the route that gives you the most reward in return.
