Just got back for the annual Catskills bowhunt with my hunting partner Theo. He had an awesome week taking three deer,, I on the other hand missed a slam dunk on a small buck and had a doe at 5 yards that never presented a shoot.
This year we have been experimenting with weight forward and heavier arrows combined with a single bevel broadhead .We both average 10 yard shots and limit our long shoots to 20 yards. Theo is shooting a 54 @ 29 Widow PMAX and a 1000g arrow (985g) , 350 carbon express heritage, 145 single bevel eclipse, 125 steel adaptor and 100g brass insert and 8 gpi weight tubes. (Theo is the designer and developer of the original Canadian Journeyman and helped the Eclipse boys with their tooling). Theo took this doe , pass through both sholders,, went 40 yards

He them took this nice Catskill buck, shot a little high and dropped him with a spine shoot:

He tried to put another arrow into the downed buck but he caught the leg as the deer lifted it as he shoot,, note incredable bone split:

Dr. Ashby thanks so much for your reseach in helping all bowhunters!!
Frank
Right on, great work
Congrats to you guys and thanks for sharing  :campfire: :archer:
Serge
man you guys did well...ED
cant deny a heavy arrow is hard to stop! congrats on the clean kills!
Great work with the heavy arrows and single bevel eclipes..
I have to ask, what are the woods in the Widow ?
Nice job!
Uhhhhhh....370 Grains up front? Are those full length? Good Job by the way!
bet those deer didn't hear that bow! well done
I always claimed curiosity as a vice...
...so how fast does a 54# BW throw a 1000gr arrow?
130...150?
If you ask me, a 54# BW, 1000grain arrow= about 150fps going in a deer and 150 fps exiting a deer :D
Very Interesting thanks for posting
Congrats!!! Looks I you two had a great time.
Congrats on the harvest Frank but geeze, talk about overkill!
No wonder you busted that leg bone so easy with a 1000 gr arrow LOL..
Great harvests guys,congrats.
I see the steel broadhead adapter appears to have broken as well. Cant see any threads in the pic. Is that true?
Looks like the eclipse held up remarkably well after hitting the bone to. Trying the double bevels this year myself.

That's probably pretty close! :biglaugh:

I hope your friend didn't intentionally aim for those shoulders. The head and arrow seemed to perform well, but I do hope it isn't making people disregard being selective about their shots. Nice deer.
Hey George good point,, Theo wasn't aiming for shoulder blades,, just showing what can happen with a good set-up if you do happen to hit bone,,
All the best,,Frank
Congrats, thanks for sharing.
Congrats Theo....

I get confuddled at times reading guy's posts, but wasn't that Doc Ashby's point of his research on the single bevel, tanto point etc?
That when/if something DOES go wrong in the field...hedge your bet for the best penetration and bone handling possible to err on the positive side to ensure critter recovery? :D
I can see that 1000 gr. arrow moving slow enough out of my low poundage bow that I might could run along side and correct it's flight for a perfect shot... :jumper: but the outcome sure is impressive!
Ahhh the Catskills. I like the Catskills. Looks like you folks had a great time too.
