Title: What broadhead are you using for your 47# Longbow?? 2,3 or 4 blade??
Post by: limbow on October 25, 2008, 12:05:00 PM
Looking to prep my Morrison Shawnee for hunting. It is 60" long, 47#@28". My hunting arrow weight will be either 480 grains or 500 grains depending on the broadhead I go with. I would like to hear what broadhead folks are using for Whitetail in this weight range, either a 2,3 or 4 blade head. I will be using easton axis 500's or aluminum. Thanks

48# SR Swift ,at my draw 51# zawicky deltas 135gr ,laminated birch shaft, 4" sheild fletch, total wt. 750gr. At 20yds I get 12-14" of penetrtion on hard foam should have no problem with a deer or a bear. I also use Magnus,Ace,Bear all 2 blade no bleeders.

Kevin,

Right now I am shooting a CT Rhino with standard aluminum inserts and a 150 gn Stinger 2 blade, but my arrows are 31" long and my bow weight is about the same at 28", but I have a 29 1/2" draw. I think you would have to use a 100 gn brass insert with the Rhino and the Stinger to get close to the right spine, but I think the spine of your arrows would be about right. Gosh, surely you are dialed in after getting that great buck! I can't imagine you need any help figuring out what you need to kill a deer. I do agree with Tiur that the Xtreem broadheads are great, but I am afraid you might need a heavier spined arrow to stick 300 gns up front.

Allan,

Why yes, the Silvertip curve has quite a reputation with the Whitetails here in Michigan. That is why I think I would like to break in my Shawnee. My Silvertip is 56#, as you know my longbows are all below 50#. For this I seek information from others on this board since it is a wealth of information! I have a current arrow set up but I am concerned about using 2-blade heads. I am equally concerned that a 3 or 4 blade head may not have enough energy out of this lower poundage bow. Thanks so far for the input guys, I do appreciate it.

Using the bow listed below. Shooting a 633 gr arrow. Legacy 2018 cut to 29.5"  with 225 grains up front. 2 blade magnus II BH. A heavy arrow for a 47# bow, but I do it because my bow can handle it.

I have a daughter that has shot since age 4 she shoots a 48LB recurve that I built for her.  Her arrow weight is about the same as yours.  She has killed deer with the following broadheads.

#1 The smaller two blade magnus.
#2 That same magnus broadhead modified buy dremel grinding a slot to fit a bear razorhead insert. Great "hybrid broadhead" a little work though.
#3 A bear super razorhead 1980's" vintage.
#4 She is now using the woodsman.

She hunts from a stand and with alot of clothing probably tends to short draw a bit.  Never the less the deer fall to her arrows.  I do have to say though that last year she had a buck turn to walk away as she shot and resulted in a what she thought was a poor hit. she thought that she hit just ahead of the rear leg.   We found that buck in 60yds just out of her sight.  We followed an huge tree spraying blood trail.  That woodsman broadhead cut through the rear leg, entered the abdomen high and cut the large artery up under the spine.. She won't hunt with anything else now

Sounds like the other guys have good advice as well.

I have a Martin Savannah longbow that is about 47# at my draw length. For that bow I use Vapor Carbonwood arrows with a 100 grain insert and 125 grain Magnus II broadheads. The arrows weigh around 530 grains.

LPM,

Is your daughter using wood, aluminum or carbon arrows?? Glued on or screw in woodsmans?? I have used them on wood and aluminum but they seem to not tune/fly so well on carbons.

Keep'em coming !!

I shoot mostly wood arrow and occasionally carbon. On both I shoot the Zephyr Scirocco, it's 125 grains as a glue-on and 150 as a screw-in. The finish weight of my arrows are around 520 grains, sometimes a little heavier.
