Title: Things You Hate to Hear!
Post by: Anaconda12 on October 23, 2008, 06:38:00 AM
Well I need to vent so maybe you can all help me get over this.  I was at the cooler the other night with the buck I killed and there was a few fellas there as usual, you know the kind that seem to hang out waiting for everybody to come in so they can tell you they seen a BIG UN' but for whatever reason did not get, how many times have you heard someone say " Well that is a good one for that Longbow!" AAAAAARGH this really erks me or even fellow bowhunters saying things after killing animals, "Well I did not hit that doe perfect but it was just a doe", or "Well if it would have been a big buck I would rather hit it a little different, but it worked", I am missing something here is the vital anatomy different between a buck and doe?  :banghead:    I for one do not feel handicapped with my choice of hunting weaponry, I do not own a rifle and have absolutely no problems with rifle hunters at all, but to constantly  hear things like this especially the low respect for one of my favorite game animals, the doe deer really drives me nuts.  Don't these idiots realize if it were not for the does that the chance of them sitting in their shooting house overlooking a food plot with there cannons would probably never kill that mature buck that wanders in before dark.  Sorry folks the two things I hate to hear, I do not know why it bothers me so much it just does.  What bothers you folks list them here so we know what buttons not to push!

What about? "It's just a spike". or "Only a little forkhorn".  These are the two I hear the most coming from rifle hunters.

One I've heard a lot lately from guys trying trad for the first time. "If I hadda been shooting my compound, I would have gotten that deer". Blaming a miss on equipment. No you wouldnt have gotten it because you werent shooting a compound.

I dont like "every animal taken with trad is a trophy". I realize that new hunters and begiiners in trad that is is a trophy to them, I"m proud of any animal I take but for me its what a trophy is to me.

As trad hunters we work more getting equipment ready, practicing etc. that statements like you mentioned belittle our efforts.

Boy my list is too long so I'll try and refrain, but "It's a shooter" is close to the top.
"Nice for a bow" is too.

"QDM doesn't work, it just kills all the does and now we don't have any deer"- you can't even bring the idea up in my home state, or you get black balled.  Generations of hunters have killed what they want- so they can tell everyone "I got my buck" (my next most hated statement).  I ask where your names was on him....

I hate to hear my bows when I shoot them, that's why I work so hard to quiet them. The other stuff is just talk and it will be a cold day when I give a rat's patookie what someone ignorant has to say about how I hunt.

Yeah I guess I should try to be more like you vermonster, but I can hardly bear it to hear someone talk about the sport I cherish without trying to educate them on our responsibilities as sportsman no matter what weapon, this post was not a poke at gun hunters, just getting some things off my chest.

"I smoked um'"
"If I was shootin' my compound I would have got em'"  I hate that one too, and as a former wheelie guy, I can say it is just as easy to miss with a compound as with any other weapon.

I had a xbow hunter tell me the other day he shot a buck and couldn't find it. So as he was leaving he saw another small buck so he shot it in the neck with a field point because he only took 1 broadhead with him. Well he never found that one either, he said it got dark and he couldn't see anymore. I dont reckon he had a light. I said what did you do that for, you cant hardly kill a squirrell with a field point. He said you cant kill em if you dont shoot at em. There are a lot of people who have no bussiness hunting with any kind of weapon. They have no respect for themselves or the animals they shoot.

I dislike my bow (or my shotgun and rifle for that matter) being referred to as a "weapon". It's not likely to ever be used in combat.

I know a lot of you guys use this one, but the term "critter" is just not cute anymore and it makes me think of Jethro of the Beverly Hillbillys. Go ahead and blast me for saying so, but ssheeeshhh...come on!

I manage a large retail sporting goods store and we sell a lot of archery equipment...Until you work in this arena, you just don't have any idea the kind of "HUNTERS" that you share the woods with....The Majority is very good and responsible but some are just plain IDIOTS. Absolutly NO personal responsibility.....EVERYTHING that goes wrong in the woods is the EQUIPMENTS fault.....The list goes on and on and on....XXXXXX broadhead will not kill a deer, xxxxx broadhead won't let a deer bleed, IT WAS JUST A DOE, IT WAS JUST A SMALL BUCK, It don't need to be sharp, I missed 3 this morning at 60 yards,ETC.......A lot of the younger generation does not have a clue as to the real reason that we bow hunt...They have been raised on Outdoor TV SHOWS and a lot of them are instant "Trophy Hunters" who have never taken that many deer and don't know the JOY of just Enjoying the hunt and getting some experience under their belt...Just yesterday a 14 year old bowhunter, who has taken 1 deer with his compound, told me he and his Dad were going to ILL. bowhunting...I wished him Good Luck and he said "Thanks but I won't need the luck". Confidence or Youthful ignorance??????? I thought about that statement all evening while in the stand.   It really makes me sick sometimes...My son Skyler and his buddy Zach hunt with me often. They know about the highs and lows of bowhunting. I believe strongly that those "lows" make the occasional "Highs" that much better. Skyler knows well, how hard it can be. I just hope that this time spent with him now, "sticks" in him and he comes to love this sport as much as I do...Sorry about the long post but this is something thats been on my mind for a while....Good Topic Quintin!!!!! Here in East TN the smartest deer in the woods is a 3 year old doe. She has been shot at most likely more than once and most likely seen a yearling kiled. Bucks are weary but a 3 year old doe is knows what is going on.

I hate it when folks call deer antlers "horns". They don't have horns, they're ANTLERS folks! The TV fist pump, " Yeah , baby!" and all the fake emotion the hunters try to portray when they " smoke" or " drill" or "take " their deer. They didn't take, smoke or drill it, they killed it.
Fowl archer your bow is a weapon whether you like to call it that or not. What do you call it a "deer gathering device"? Killing a deer is a violent act and we shouldn't candy coat it and make like its something other than it is. Its killing so we can eat 'em.  Don't apologize for that which isn't wrong.

When I was new to hunting (I started with a stickbow) I was eager to hunt anywhere with anyone and ended up hunting hogs on a "ranch" with all rifle hunters. As soon as they saw my recurve a few of them (including the guide/owner) made comments such as: "So, after you make that animal look like a pin cushion we're gonna hafta come shoot it for ya?!!" As the fortunes would have it I tagged the biggest hog of all of them! That shut 'em up! Something like that wouldn't phase me at all today but as a new hunter I confess I was tickled pink!   :bigsmyl:

"If I was shootin' my compound I would have got em'"...well this is true for most people because a compound is easier to shoot accuratly..."I hit him PERFECT" but I can't find any blood."...this has happened to me and many others its just something that happens and is factual

"Yeah it's small but if I didn't shoot, I would have gone home skunked."  The hunter that said this was disappointed with the grizzly he shot.  Now he has a very small bear on the wall that will disappoint him every time he sees it.  What a waste....

It's not just gun hunters or compound shooters either.

I quit hunting with a couple of guys years ago who looked down on small bucks.  They were "trophy hunters".  I would love a nice big buck but if the trophy didn't appear that year a small buck would do nicely.  And we were all tradional hunters then, we had no other choice.  Their comments were "Why did you shoot that little thing?" (It was a healthy, fat forkhorn).  By the way these comments were made over 30 years ago and they still gripe me.

I also stopped associating with a club member who was two checkouts over in a large store full of women and he shouted "How did you do deer hunting this year?"  I tried not to reply.  He then bellowed out "I stuck 5 but only got 4."

Ignorance knows no bounds.

The only situation I have ever heard a bowhunter say."If I would have been hunting with my compound I would have got them." was due to the fact the they didn't take a shot over 20 yards with their new stickbow but would have with their compounds.
I hate to hear everyone in the truck but me fart at nearly the same time.

Anaconda, I could not agree with you more. I have a trio of doe's that I have been sighting all week. They or should I say she (the other two follow her) has three different ways in to the stand of walnut trees on the fence row. My friend yacks about this buck.......... and I am not going after my buck (named Bubba) until I can get that doe. The wiliest wood smart creature I have ever come across. SHe is good........ I just hope I am better  ;)  AS far as rifle guys and the handicapped (wheelbows),I don;t pay much attention. Although my friend is a die hard wheel guy he is slowly comming around to maybe trying traditional. I always tell him when he really wants to hunt he will try it  ;)

I gotta say one that bugs me is "if it's legal it's ethical".  It stems from a clip somebody sent me thinking since I'm a hunter I would appreciate it, of a guy shooting a bedded deer from like 900 yds away from some kind of adjustable seat sniper rifle mess. Don't know if that was even legal but it almost made me puke. of course they were hootin' and hollerin' about it. Maybe it's me but that didn't seem too ethical. (ps I own a rifle)

I have heard most all the stuff you guys mention.

Now I see other hunters; and when they ask me what I have seen; I tell them that I have seen a lot of young bucks; but nothing mature; and that I only shoot does and mature bucks.

Of course I shoot what I want; but it sets them back a bit.

 When a neighbor gunned down a 9 point; I said - 'that's a good management buck'.

When they shoot a small buck - or a nice buck I always say 'I wonder what it would have grown to look like next year' ; or 'I had several chances to shoot that buck; wondered if it was old enough: too bad in a way'.

Or 'too bad your not strong enough to pull back a bow'.

 yep I am a risk taker  :)

by the way if you are in a truck with others; always grab the door seat; yes its the 'gateboy' seat; but when your going through traffic or a town; everytime you reach down to 'tie your boots'; it looks like all your buddies are sitting together real close like ..... 'real buddies'.   :D

I canceled my outdoor channel. just couldn't take it anymore.A trip to bass pro and cabelas yesterday just disgusted me. while practising with wheel archers after they shoot a real tight group- "thats good shooting hey" or "see that shot" after they've hit the bull at 50m. i think to myself, "give me that bow and 4 days practise, i could do it to". this recently from a mate who has just started shooting wheels- "i can shoot a 9" group at 60m!"
here's one- "i'm going trad next year". to that i think to myself, "well if you start now you'll be ready to hunt trad next year". got to get some more kills in before they switch i suppose.

I hate to hear someone say, after looking at my one of my selfbows" I could never make one those, I just don't have the patience". They are sure selling themselves short.

My all time least favorite saying when I recommend someone learn to make arrows, strings, bows or work on the hunting club is" I don't have the time". These same people probably watch 2 or 3 hrs of TV a day, hunt a good bit, visit with friends and do everything else they want to do but when it comes to learning something new or helping at the club, they "don't have the time".

another thing i hate to hear is that trad hunters smell like mountain men, carry there arrows in rotten coyote skin quivers, and are unethical because they cant shoot.  for the most part, thats just not true.  i wish people could see it was just an difference in equipment choice, and that we all were in it to have fun.
on the other hand, i hate to hear trad shooter down the skill of compound archers.  yeah, at 20-30 yards, it sure is easier to shoot a compound.  but compound archers are psuhing the ranges further and futher.  those who say compound are easy to shoot, have you ever shot at 60-100 yards?  i have, and that tiny breeze ya feel on your face?  that'll push your arrow clean off the Block target at 80 yards.  people who say "gimme a day and i could do the same", are just plain ignorant.  a day with a compound is just long enough to screw the cam timing up, mess up the drop away sttings (uh...whats a drop away?, much less set the 1st, 2nd and 3rd axis level, micro adjust the pins.  one day is also enough time ta start punching the trigger, and learning a suprise release?  takes months.  some people - both trads and compounds - just plain old crack me up at the total ignorance over anything but there specialty.

"Is a Black Widow worth it?"  That is my least favorite line (could be any brand inserted here, but this one seems to be asked more than most).  If it isn't worth it to you, don't buy it.

I also hate "BBD, big buck down"  I stopped watching the outdoor channel because I got so sick of hearing it.

"I like to do things the hard way.  Keep my shots close."  Then proceed to take 60 yard running shots on camera.

I could go on and on...Mike

I hate that there is not enough UNITY in our sport HUNTING no matter the weapon.. But I here you loud and clear it drives me up the wall how unethical some hunters are and they wonder why we are viewed this way when they are in the store talking about the one they smoked, layed the smack down, etc. etc. Nets are for fish, this I agree with but the score of a buck has taken over our sport, remember when there was a big deer contest and the winner was determined by weight not rack size? And if I haved smoked something it is either turkey, jerky, sausage, fish, etc.

That is exactly my problem with compound shooters.  The whole point of hunting with a bow and I use the term loosely when describing anything with cam's and letoff. Is to get within the animals comfort zone.  I haven't hardly killed anything compared to most of the guys on this site, yet until the day that I am forced to live on what I can kill it is very important to me as I think it should be to any "hunter" how I kill the animal.

I just returned from a hunt with 5 wheelie shooters.  I never loosed an arrow.  "We" managed to shoot four hogs and three deer, of which two were nice bucks.  "We" recovered none!  I spent two hunts tracking said animals.  Here are some quotes:

"Thirty Eight yards is further than I've ever shot before"

"There were some sapplings in the way, but I thought I could squeeze one in there"

"I only got two inches of penetration because I mis-judged the yardage and the arrow skipped off the ground before hitting the hog"

"I knew the shots on the first two hogs were too far back, but that biggest one was a definite double lunger".  Turns out the third one was still on his feet 600 yards later after we lost the trail for good.

"I shot him too far back, but figured he would be dead after an hour".  This was his explaination after jumping the deer.

Don't think I'll make this trip next year.

I've taken a few and I've heard, "Well you just have a good spot" or "If I had enough time to practice I could do it too".  Biggie, you seem like a real good guy, but if my 14 year old son shoots any deer with a bow, no matter what it is, I can guarantee you it'll be a trophy as well as an accomplishment. I agree. I shot a coyote last night and had a clean pass through.(Old bear razor head, 45 lbs PSE longbow gold tip arrow.)The old yote made some thick briars and I was unable to find him after four hours on my hands and knees and I plan to go back sunday after work and look somemore. My neighbor said " Its just a coyote your acting like it was a huge buck or somthing." Well to me it is. Due to the color and smell of the blood I believe it was a liver hit.

This is something that I actually had said to me.  I was at the locally owned bait shop/ Hunting store here in the little town I live in.  Everyone knows everyone here.  I have known the owner pretty much all my life.  Now on to the point.  Last year I took a small button buck on opening day with my recurve from the ground with about an 8 foot shot.  This was my first Trad deer as well as my first deer with a bow   :bigsmyl:  and at the check in the owner looks at me and says " why in the #### did you shoot something like that?"     That actually made me sick to my stomach.  I haven't been back to his shop since.

Tired of hearing the so called Professionals on the Outdoor Channel and other outdoor shows that take poor shots and claim it was the only shot they had. Heck of a thing to say when sometimes your best shot is not shooting at all. I enjoy the hunt a whole lot more than the harvest. The harvest is only the icing on the cake.

Well...Southpawshooter and myself spent the entire day yesterday bowhunting jersey whitetails. In the wind and rain....heavy at times I may add. When you have limited vacation time to bowhunt, you make the most of your opportunities....

And yes...we did see deer, had a few close encounters but no shots offered. I have a problem with the fair weather "Posers".

Not so much anything they said, but I hate the snickers and smiles when people see me shooting the longbow on the 3d range... Like I don't know what I'm doing (maybe I don't, but it ain't because of the bow)...

Funny story - had a few guys snickering at me and my buddy shooting our trads at a 3D range a few years ago... I told him I'd shoot head to head with him -- I pick the first shot, he picks the second.  I walked up to a downed log about 18 inches off the ground, dropped to a knee, bent over, held the longbow horizontally, and punched one right behind the shoulder from under the log at about 10 yards.  His response -- "&@#$ You!" and he walked off... I guess it's only fun if he can win!

That's the thinking that has our car insurance so high, crossbows in the archery seasons and bluetongue disease to name a few.
On a lesser note, it makes for no rut sign, smaller and less healthy deer and spikehorns doing the breeding.

Smart deer management requires killing of does, at least from where I'm used to hunting.  We were allowed 3 deer at the government facility we hunted and 2 had to be antlerless.  This is 35,000+ acres incidently so it's not like a fenced in park.

I don't like to hear "Pro Shop" used to describe an archery shop that only carries junk for compound bow shooters. No string materials, arrows spined under .400, broadheads weighing over 100 grains, forget about an actual trad bow.

I went into the above described shop, the name of the shop actually has the word, "Everything" as the lead of a two word Name!!

Asked a couple of questions about trad archery, and the man/owner said to me, "Traditional archery is dead."

I still go there ocassionally with my bow and shoot the indoor range. I know most would'nt, but I have always done things to educate the uneducated. Thats the nicest way I can say it. Most of the sucess I've had in life comes from the other thing I dont like to hear.

From the responses to my last comment...I also hate to hear " I get as many doe tags as I can and try to fill them". I'm sure the folks who now hunt all of deer season in Pa. and see nary a tail and nary a track think this is a great idea.
I also hate to hear "Too many deer cause our car insurance to go up,and cause crossbows in archery season, and cause blue tongue disease". Car insurance is so high because there are so many careless drivers who can't drive...Crossbows are in archery season because the crossbow companies smelled the money from hunters who want it easier and easier and easier...and when the deer were so "overpopulated" in the 80's and 90's how come you never heard of Blue Tongue Disease??
I can tell you this...As a high school teacher I see the interest from youngsters toward hunting fading each year...Why???  A big part is because the guys who kill all the does have left kids who might show some interest in hunting with few deer to see and they get bored.Just today I heard a kid say.."I was going to go bowhunting last Saturday but I haven't seen a single deer yet. I went fishing." Kids don't need Huge Bucks to peak their interest...but they do need to see deer. Show the younger ones nothing, bore them, and you've lost them for good.Too many other things out there to capture their interest. Just like starting a youngster fishing...Take him to a bluegill pond, let him have a ball and he's hooked for life. Same with hunting. Better let him at least see deer. If he catches nothing or sees nothing he will give it up!

doeboy

Yeah, I'm sure.

The worst part was that there were other customers within earshot that looked how I felt.

High tech has hijacked modern archery I'm afraid.  It's an arms race and the young who are being drawn into archery now are buying it hook line and sinker. It's what they see on TV, what they read about in Field and Stream, and what they see in the archery shops.

I hate to hear "I'm getting 350 feet per second out of my bow."

I encourage you to speak with a wildlife biologist.

Quotes from my archery shop...

"You sure these arrows will fly straight out of my bow?"

"What do you mean I have to sharpen these Zwickeys, can't I hunt with them like this?"

"Can I just buy 2 of those custom arrows out of that dozen?"

"Can I shoot my compound arrows off this new recurve?"

"I WHACKED a big doe last night, right in the shoulder. She ran off....we never found her. She'll be OK...I missed the vitals."

Turkey-duke .  its funny,

"We've been hunting hard here in Illinois - its the second day of the hunt..."

Almost assuredly they were sitting in a treestand.  Now, not putting down the fact that they may have spent a long time in the tree...... what is so hard about that ?  We hunted hard.....  ????

If a hunter around here refuses to shoot does and the landowner/farmer finds out, their hunting rights are usually terminated.

Hate to hear:

"hit him perfect in both lungs, then he ran off leaving no blood"

"you expect to kill a bear with that bow?"

"carbon arrows are traditional; because there is epoxy in your bow riser"...

ChuckC,

Yup, that's what Im talkin about.  Sitting in a stand that their guide hung with no clue as to how to really get out and hunt. I've got a feeling that far fewer deer would be killed if all those "expert" hunters we have on TV had to be completely self-guided.

Question: How can you shoot those cute deer?
Answer:  Sight alignment and trigger control works every time!

What my friend said to a lady after he shot one with his smoke pole.

FYI, In MI in 2007 over 60,000 deer were killed by car and we fall behind PA in the stats.   I agree about careless drivers but I used to work for an insurance company, I can guarantee that these numbers are not ignored by an actuary.

I don't disagree with you abou the car insurance.  I see the resutls and take the reports weekly.  I was encouraging him to speak with a wildlife biologist about deer management.
