I ordered a brush rest from 3rivers, hoping that I could use vanes. I love feathers, but they are expensive, and I go through alot of them, what with the Oregon monsoons and head high brush. Anyone else use vanes with a brush rest?
Back in the 1970's and 80's I did all of my bowhunting with a 50# Bear Alaskan with a rubber Bear weather-rest,Easton Game Getter or Autumn Orange XX75 aluminiums arrows with vanes and 4 blade Savora broadheads.....
I think the brush rest would work just as good if not better!!!!! :thumbsup:
What I can remember from going to shoots with my father in the 80s pretty much everyone who shot a recurve was using a rest of some sort with vanes. My father used a brush rest at one time with fiberglass and later aluminum arrows fletched with 5 inch vanes and that seemed to work well enough for him. Many of the compounds from the late 70s and early 80s were also set up with the same stick on style rests that people commonly used on recurves.
Most Fita archers use vanes so I imagine vanes with pretty much any elevated rest would work fine.

I have most of my recurves set up with a bear weather rest. Once you get use to it the rests are fine. I would imagine any of the elevated rests work the same. With feathers costing 40 bucks a hundred and vanes costing 7 dollars hundred it gets real easy to like the elevated rests.The vanes are super quiet also. The only bow I dont have set up for vanes now is a brack quest I picked up a while back.That will change in the next couple of weeks too. So far I have found zero negatives on an elevated rest. I'm sure someone will come on and say something bad about using them though.Only mods I do is to cut the bottom down some so the little finger sits a tad lower to the shelf, raise my nock point a tad then cover the whole shelf and rest with dr shoels moleskin.Good luck.

I gotta admit, I love shooting off the shelf, and with feathers, have never had a problem with arrow flight or anything else, but the feathers have started to drive me crazy lately, and they are so thrashed after one hunt in the brush/rain. We will see how it goes, i guess.

I remember in a conversation with Steve Gorr about shooting vanes many years ago, where he talked about using two vanes and one feather. He thought it was the best of both worlds in wet conditions. The feather goes down toward where the shelf and sight window meet.
I think a slightly elevated shelf, which would allow a gap between shelf and sideplate, would be helpful if you want to try three vanes.

I nock the arrow the same on the string as when shooting off the shelf. If the arrow is tuned it doesnt seem to matter much as to vane orintation. The nock on the string for me ends up about 3/8" above square. I'm on a new computer and I havent set this thing up for my el cheapo camera yet so I cant do the photo thing yet on here.

I just put a flipper rest II on my long bow and the wifes recurve. We are getting great arrow flight with 5" vanes. NO more trying to keep feathers dry in the liquid sunshine.

I have been using brush rests for my recurves for 30+ years. I do carry a spare in my quiver. I had one come apart during a 3-d shoot some years back. I mount mine as close to the shelf as I can. I like vanes for wet weather when we do get some.
I used the flipperII on a compound when I strayed to the dark side for a year. I was using a plunger with the flipper rest.
Both are great rests IMHO, simple and not expensive.
I have a 1976 BW with a brush rest on it like you ordered, have 4 of them in backup for some of my bow. They will work great with vanes and are one of my favorite rest's if not shooting off the shelf. A friend of mine was looking at the one on my widow the other day, asked about it, and I told him it was a 1970's whisker biscuit!
Some have said they use Blazers and they work fine.

Got the brush rest and a bear weather rest from 3 rivers last week. Put the brush rest on, and on the second shot it flew off. I went and picked it up, found the rest had seperated from the sticky stuff, and not only that, it had cracked all the way through, making it unuseable. I was a little frustrated, threw on the bear weather rest, and I am now shooting as good as I ever have. shooting carbon express 6075s, 31" long with 4 inch duravanes, they fly incredibly well, and go where I look. I am very happy with what I got.
I think I have a couple of the bear rest in my supply box, I will give them a try when I get the new bow. It's gonna be close, it's going to be done the first of November, I will have one month to be successful at getting a deer with my NEW traditional bow, but after all, it's a WhisperStik and I think they have a nose for whitetail, I think JD trains them before he sends the bow to ya !
