hey Ron, the camo pants on your website; where'd you find those?
I read a book once called "Braintan your hide or God gave critters just enough brains to tan their own hide " I got it from the library.
I have an old video by ,I think his name is, Mel Betty, called the tanning spirit. It's very informing on the subject. He takes you through the whole process from proper skinning to smokeing the finished hide. DB
Hey Guys,
This is supposed to be 'the' book about brain tanning. Mr. Richard has spent a fair amount of time experimenting to see which of the steps of the tanning process are really necessary, and has modified, and simplified tanning. His methods give a top quality product with less effort. As far as I know there is a companion video.
"Deerskins Into Buckskins" by Matt Richard
I have a copy of this book coming through **** .... $9 shipped :D

i make them all the time.
tough as nails.
and it will take you a while to cut through one even with a razor sharp knife!
they are not that heavy at all,but if you waterproof them and load them up with fat or beeswax they will weigh more...but who cares about a few fps???
they are very awesome.

Start with Matt Richards the book and DVD. Once you've done a few hides start to read some of the other sources old and new. You'll understand more and pick up a few tricks/details that you may want to try out. And this step, drop that step, use KOH and vinegar. Wet, dry, power washer, Brains, eggs, soap, oils...
All kinds of fun tanning the hides of the animails you kill.
i just stretch, scrape and salt.
scrape again and let dry...for rawhide.
just a lettle elbow grease and salt and a couple of dry days is all ya need.
this is how i get my strings-cordage.
from groundhogs,squills,deer.
