Title: deer in hot weather
Post by: Ian johnson on October 15, 2008, 03:51:00 PM
I have seen no movement what so ever the past week, both by myself and the trail camera, it has been in the 80's, I know that hot wether affects thier movement but will it really make them go totally nocturnal?

Hunt water holes. They have to drink. I went out last night here in Jersey hunting behind a swamp. 76 degrees. Hunted on the ground in front of a root ball from a felled tree. Didn't want to carry in the climbing stand  for a couple of hours  and make noise and get sweated up. I killed at least 2 dozen mosquitos. I had a nice, big, lone doe strolling in at 20 minutes to 6.. I didn't even see her until she jammed on the brakes ,stopped, stomped, snorted, and took off. She caught me swatting bugs before I saw her. Gotta get a Thermocell!!!

The full moon and hot weather are a bad combination. The deer are out all night and bed up long before dawn. Keep an eye on the forecast for cool overcast days following cloudy or moonless nights. Things will be better then.
And, what the heck, a bad day hunting is still better than a day at work!

Its been 70degrees during the day an around 55degrees during the night here in Ohio. That with the full moon the deer have been late getting out for the past week.

Good thread, it's been warm here in MI too, and a full, bright moon at night. Yesterday was the first cold day.

I'm with ya on livin' somewhere cold! It can get pretty warm here too, but probably not like LA  :)

Ian:
I think the moon is the problem not the heat. I killed a decent buck Saturday morning in Oklahoma at 7:05AM.The temperture was about 85 degrees by noon. Saw a doe out of the same stand Friday evening. They are moving to the feed sources late and going into bedding areas early.
Good luck. Keep'um sharp.

I had a deer blowing at me at 0500 this am.  And I was in bed.  The dang thing was on the other side of the fence about 10 yds from the house and was raising cane.  The moon was just setting at that time.

I know out here where I hunt that if they are out all night they tend to get up in early afternoon alot of times.

BigRon beat me to it. Midday is usually good during a full moon, even if it is warm! Shawn

When it`s hot and the bugs will not leave me alone,I`ll practice shooting.Practice gets put on the back burner for the most part when hunting starts.

Great thread.  So what happens in cold weather with no moon?  No, I am serious what happens in the opposite situation.  I have always hunted the same time regardless of moon or temp.  This has already explained a few things.

Bill Turner?  Do we need to start calling you Boot Strap Bill Turner?  I don't know if you know this but you have the same name as a pirate in all of the new Pirates of the Caribbean movies.  You should change your login name and avatar.

Killed dozens of deer here in GA with the temps in the 90s and relative humidity over 80%.  That's about describes 75% of our bowseason down here.

Your problem this weekend was likely the moon.

I grew up hunting in Florida and Mississippi.  Like Terry said, hot weather is something you just have to deal with.  The deer deal with it too.  They don't whole up all summer and fall just because it's hot.

I started hunting mid day, a few years ago, from about 4 days before till 4 days after a full moon.  I was amazed at the movement I saw.  If you haven't tried it, do so.  Give it a few days, stay in the woods, and see what happens.
