Being retired I also will be out there Sat as long as it is not a big rain day. I no longer hunt in the rain, I am always concered If I shoot a deer I will lose it in the rain. So On heavy rain days I sit in. Now with snow I hunt all the time. I wish all to have a safe hunting season and all be able to get the shot of there dreams.

Good luck to all, bring back some stories if not meat.

Steve, I'll be hunting over in Clinton and Rhinbeck.  It is truly a small world.  My buddy used to work over at Norie, he gave me a skull off of a winter(or poacher) killed buck.  It is a wild looking rack, I'll have to post a pic of it.
Boy did I ever I love that deli right in staatsburg.

Hi, Nathan... Yes I live within walking distance of Norrie Point. Lot's of deer in the Park (of course! they're all protected!) I hunt the Clinton-Rhinebeck area myself. Lot's of deer about this year. More than the last couple of years that's for sure! Good luck!

That's good to hear.  A friend of mine has permisssion to hunt a big estate in Rhinbeck. He went to fill a damage permit in sept or so for a hunter safety class(I thought that was a great way to teach field dressing!!), and had to pass on 10 (!!) bucks before they finally found a doe.  Looks like our management is finally paying some dividends.

Best of luck,

Nathan

Well, I made meat this morning. It was kind of interesting but trying. I got in about 6:15am. At first light I have a doe and fawn come into the apple tree I am watching and I decide to take the fawn, it is only about 10 yards but I am up pretty high. I draw anchor and shoot right over him, yes him it turns out to be a button, he come right under me and I decide not to shoot. Just than I look back and another fawn comes up the hill looking like "where did everybody go"? the deer turns and gives me a hard quartering shot, I draw pick my spot and release, sounds good but did not see my hit. The deer runs down past me and stops at about 22-23 yards. I see it is bleeding but up high, I than realized I shot thru its ear. It gets nervous and starts to walk broadside, I draw pick a spot and release, perfect this time, the arrow entered high in the shoulder and took out both lungs. I got down right away and started trailing, there was quite a bit of stomach contents so I was gonna back out, but replayed the shot in my head and I knew it was good. I followed the blood about 60 yards and found him laying there, yes him. It was another button, Mom must of had twin buck fawns. I was still happy as I have some venison for the table for me and Dad. No pics. Larry, you know me, I do not get much into all that stuff, maybe a big buck and I will show a pic. but that is about it! I will be back out at 3pm. for another try. I am shooting most anything as I have to have some pretty serious surgery the 20th. of Nov.. It is of the type that is pretty personal so I will not go into detail. Take care!! Shawn

I ended up hunting by myself, I had some climber issues. Damon(Nomad88) sat until 10:30 in his spot in the Catskills and did not see a deer. We are going in this afternoon around 3pm. in the bow only area. He is gonna sit the stand he got his first trad kill out of last year on opening day and I am gonna sit a new stand on a creek crossing. If this wind stays NNE we will be golden. Thanks guys, I hope to put a few more on the ground in the next month, as I do not know if I will be able to hunt after the surgery. Shawn

I had as shot this morning, hit a branch that I decided not to trim, I watched in horror as my arrow headed for the hind quarters thank God it missed all together. I saw 3 more bucks one 2 1/2 year old nice deer, then I heard talking I saw a couple Amish guy's marking my neighbors trees that kinda screwed thing up so I went home, getting ready for round two, I'm going to let that stand cool till Sun.

I made meat as well and got a nice doe . The doe went past Adam and he spooked her trying to get his bow up . After that she came down towards me , when she hit the deer dander I laid down on the way in she came right onto my lane . I hit a little back but looked good and watched as she ran 30 yards then stopped and looked around . she walked around some then looked wobblie and went down over the gully bank and crashed . I didn't hear any more noise but waited till Adam came down to get me . We went back to the house for coffee and waite it out some then back to look . We found her right at the bottom as I thought we would and after photo's and cleaning we dragged her out , all up hill both ways :0) Headed out soon and to hunt at Dad's , pics later . Drew

Well, we just got in, I saw 8 or 9 deer tonight and one nice buck but all 70 yards or farther away. I also had 9 or 10 longbeards t 35 yards for a while. Damon was into them something fierce,  I believe he saw 4 or 5 bucks and a couple does. He also dare I say? Missed, he had a spike come into about 5 yards but it was a tough angle trying to let his bow limb clear the stand. He sat a stand that I have killed 15 deer from over the years, when the apples are thick so are the deer. I also have soomething funny to tell. This morning while I was walking back to get my truck after leaving my deer by the roaed, curt Texted me. I texted back once and than said the hell with it and called him. While I was on the phone with him and standing at the back of my truck I see a nice buck walking across the field next to the farm house I hunt. I siad a quick goodbye and drove down the road to intercept this buck. He must of caught me as I rounded the hedgerow he was standing staring at about 60 yards, a very nice 9pt(125-130"). I hope to have a date with him tomorrow. Great day all in all! Shawn

Ru - That must have been a great hunt having a beer within 40 yards. You have great woodsman skills and will be a very succesfull bow hunter from the ground. Let me know when you think that you can pull a bow that is 55# @ 28" at your draw length. I have a Martin Hunter that I shot my first traditional bow deer with many years ago. I would like you to have it.

Today looks like a perfect morning we have a heavy frost it's around 28 looks good.

Big doe came in last night - posed broadside in the spot I would have picked for a deer to stop.
Stinger 4 blade never slowed a bit thru the ribs.
Heard her crash in some real thick stuff, so backed out to wait for morning.

Decided to go out at dawn and sit for an hour before getting last night's and let the frost clear. Parade started at 7:30, but I was going to hold for a buck. When the 8th deer stopped broadside at 9 yds, it was an offer I couldn't refuse. Blew thru the paddle bone and broke the offside leg - 5 yd track  :D

With another Stinger on a GT 5575 - total 425gr from 53# DAS.

A bit of work to do now.

Steve

Very nice Steve. Damon and I were out again this evening. I will say damon had some shooting but no deer, won't say anything else except he will connect eventually if he keeps putting that many arrows in the air!  :biglaugh:  I sat the same stand as I shot the deer yesterday from, a lone coyote heading to the gut pile was all I saw on stand. I climbed down and walked out a bit early and headed upp the road to check if anything was coming up the edge of the cornfield. I look out about 120 yards and there are 3 deer in the field. I checked with the binos and all 3 were bucks, the nice 9pt. being one of them. I told them to have a good night and headed for the truck. I ws standing by the truck taking off my hunting clothes and I hear something coming up and across the driveway, thought for sure it was Damon. I turn around and here is a big doe followed by two little ones. They come to a stop at 5 yards. The bow was onthe roof of the truck and all I could do was laugh. Damon must of put them out on his way out of the woods as he showed up 2 minutes later. Best of luck everyone! Shawn

Well this has been the best opening few days I can remember in a long time. I have seen 7 deer so far. I could have shot a few but they were a little small. The reason I think is the cold weather is making them a little more comfortable with there winter coats. Are others having the same luck.

WHAT AN OPENER!!!!

Saturday morning:  Shot over the back of a 10 point at 10 yards, and the second shot center punched a sapling.  He wandered off, unspooked.

Saturday afternoon:  Walking an open field on the way back out for the evening session, I walked up on a BIG (another 10) point out feeding.  Dropped, stripped my gear, nocked an arrow, and did a belly crawl to the top of the rise.  His body was completely perpendicular to me, and he was just feeding - at 30 yards.  Each time he picked his head up, he looked opposite my way.  No way to get closer.  So I gave it a go.  Got to my knees, came to full draw, picked a spot, and let it go.  Watching that arrow arc through the air was beautiful.  Closer, closer, - man, its going to do it!!!!   SMACK.  Buck startles, and tucks his tail, scooting for the woods.  Went back and got my partner.  I was beyond excitement.  We went back to the spot, and commenced the search.  Found the arrow, with the front 3" broken off, and blood only about 6" on the shaft, and little or no blood anywhere.  OH NOOOOOOOOO! Shoulder blade!   Some hard searching resulted in a miniscule blood trail, and after a solid 2 hours, and no spots bigger than 2 or three drops, no signs of him lying down or stumbling, we called it (was not an easy decision).  A matter of inches, and now my emotions hit rock bottom.

Sunday morning:

A bad nock resulted in pulling the arrow off the string (twice) on an 8-point at 10 yards before he walked out of my life.  Later, missed a doe at 20 yards by shooting over her back (again).  She wandered around for the next hour feeding, then wandered off.  Need to do a touch more trimming at that stand.

Around that I also saw numerous does outside of range.  In my entire season last year, I only saw two deer (button and a doe).

So its a week of getting my head right, shooting straight, and back at them Saturday.

Not the story I wanted to be telling......

BobW

Sweet shooting Drew!  Nice doe.

I had a pretty good weekend even though I didn't let an arrow go.  Almost got run over by a coyote (he veered off at about 5 yds!!), should have drawn ahead of time instead of trying to pivot and draw    :banghead:      :jumper:      :jumper:      :D

I love that ghillie and deer dander!!  He walked behind me and into my wind.  picked up my scent and decided It wasnt a problem.  He did a full slow walk circle right around me (no farther than 10 yds away at any time)and never got agitated.. I couldn't believe it.

Hopefully tonight will be just as exciting.  Good luck gents.

Great evening, I watched 2 eight points for over 45 minutes lay in a wide open field 100 yards away. One a 130" deer, I was gonna move to another stand when at 4:45 they started to feed up and towards another stand of mine. Trust me on this one, go with your first instinct. I stayed put and at 6:15 I watched as they both walked right under that stand, ben a good start and hoping it gets better. Jamie, anything yet? Shawn

I didn't see a thing last night, I set my blind up were I have been seeing the deer come out of the slashing into the open woods to feed. The wind was right but it was warm they may have moved after dark. Now I'm real glad I shot the spike, every day I plan to take off someone makes an appointment with me at work, it looking like weekends till Nov. Joe will be done with soccer after this weekend then my blind will be crowded   :bigsmyl:  then things will get real interesting      :campfire:    :archer:    :archer:

Same with me Jim, wind was good but things just didn't work out.

On the bright side,  I don't think I broke my bow (or anything else) when I ran at about half speed into a cable across a trail (it was dark)    .  Just as I was saying to myself "wasn't there a caaaable" i got hit at stomach level and was bent like a letter c.  Got dropped on my butt like a sack of potatoes.  Other than my pride, I think all else is intact.  :knothead:

Lots of apples and acorns around my place... Coyotes too! Kinda got the deer spooked. So much for "undisturbed game". Dry weather makes for poor stalking and still hunting. Anyway.....

I gave it a good try Saturday morning into the little swamp that's just under 100 yards from my home. Took me about 90 minutes to get in there, going real slow like. A group of turkeys close by helped cover my sound. Now I'm in the middle of this swamp when.... Crash! Crack! Thump! A deer takes off not 15 yards away! Head down, tail tucked. Figure it was a buck. Gone in a flash. I'll get back up there this week. Maybe use another way into the cover.

Ken, you always have permission to hunt at my place.   ;)
We missed you today. I had to work in the morning but I got to hunt with Nathan in the afternoon. That was a treat. The wind was changing direction every minute, sometimes was blowing in all directions at once...   :(
We both saw some does but no  bloody arrows. Still a gorgeous day to be out.
Nathan, it was a pleasure. Looking forward to the next time.

Today after work I headed to the stand I was in on Sat. morning when i bumped one on the way in, it was right by the stand. I then decided to go to the stand I shot the spike in, not an hour after I settled in I spotted a doe heading my way. She was coming up the same trail as the buck but began to veer to my left so I decided to shoot her while she was walking, she had her head down so I picked a spot on her neck figuring that she would walk right into it. I released and guess what I hit her right were I was looking, the arrow passed right through and just laid there. She only ran about 25 yards and stopped, her tail started to flick and I new she had had it, she just tipped over dead. I'm giving this one to my 80 year old friend he likes one for his camp, this has been a good season so far.

Boy Jim, you are having one heck of a season!!

I on the other hand am cursed!!  I again was thwarted in my attempts to shoot one of two beautiful 8pters.  Good news is I had two nice 8pters within bow range while hunting on the ground.  The bad news is I had two beautiful 8pters within bow range while hunting on the ground and again couldn't get a shot.  What a rush though!!  They were awesome and really close!!

A friend of mine that I only see about once a year just switched to shooting an old bear recurve and shot an absolutely beautiful 6.  As I'm walking up to the car he says he shot an OK 6pter...when I saw it I almost choked.  Heavy beamed like you pray for.

I thought one of the 8pters was gonna stick a tine in my backside.  He was that close!!

I got to watch two squirrels chase eachother all afternoon. The small one was beating up the big one....and by big I mean...if I didnt know it was a squirrel I woulda thought it was one of Shawn's rabbits!
Never saw a deer until I pulled into the driveway, large doe and smallish spike were helping themselves to my apples.
Jim...you are on fire! Congrats!

Jamie, we had a fair crop on the red oaks  this year but they fell pretty early, the beechnuts are still falling and so is hickory these are the areas I'm keying on and seeing deer.
Curt your right on with your analogy of my shooting, I wont try that again, I'm going to look for a flock of turkeys to get Joe a shot opportunity, their kinda scarce around here the past few seasons. Thanks guy's for all your kind words if it wasn't for Trad Gang none of this would be happening, I learned so much from here in the past couple years that otherwise may have taken a decade to learn.

Good Luck Jim ,
Adam shot a bear on monday night and we have been tracking on and off since. I had deer search guys in today but no luck , looks like this bear will live and might get another shot at it later. Its been a stressfull couple days trying to track this bear , starting with monday night around 11 pm . We got to the point we didn't know who was tracking who , marked the spot and backed out . We went back in in the am and tracked for five hours to no end . Lost the blood and couldn't pick it up again . Deer search guys in today with the bear dog and covered the field , did I mention large standing corn field. Well general consensus is live bear and still going. Hope to get another chance to get it done right.  Drew

Have not posted in a day or two. I have had a change of heart and I let some deer walk. My surgery is not until Nov. 20th. so I have time. Last night I sat a little creek bottom  right on the edge of the creek , this forms a great funnel. I had a small buck come out and pass at 10 yards. It was in the thick so I decided to pass an iffy shot. 5 minutes later he walks right by at 15 ft. and since I let him go once I let him go again. I also had a doe and fawn walk by as well and passed them too!! It is starting to heat up and I am seeing some scrapes and I saw two bucks pissin on their hocks already. I have the first two weeks of Nov. off and damon the whole 2nd. week off also, we should have some stories to tell for sure!!  Oh, as a side note the new property I have to hunt is loaded with deer and a kid I am teaching to hunt sat it last night. I told him where to sit and to do a little soft calling, he ended up seeing 26 deer and missed a nice buck at 15 yards(compound). He admitted this morning he was shaking so bad he could not draw the bow at first. We sat the property the other night and  I saw 9 different deer and Damon saw 6. We will be back there Sunday afternoon. Good Luck all! Shawn

I do not like mornings in the early season, I think it does more harm than good for your deer hunting. Also with todays high winds they will be bedded in some thermal cover or else right out in the open fields so it is a good day to work on the house. Tomorrow morning however may be great as they should move when the rain stops. Shawn

rain here too. I got up and thought about going duck hunting out back this morning. then remembered I hadn't bought a duck stamp yet. DOH! I've been jumping hundred of ducks out of the beaver slew behind the house every time I walk back there and I haven't heard one shot this year, but do you think I could remember to stop by the pot office? I agree with Shawn though. Tomorrow morning should be great.

Glad to see I'm not the only one that didn't wanna go out in that this morning LOL

Once I got close to where I wanted to be last night only to be grounded by the buck activity I ended up setting in the hedgerow between 2 corn fields about 15yrds from the tree I wanted to be in but the bucks where grunting up a storm and 1 had a very deep grunt

Lets skip to the chase....finally here comes a doe with a fawn and she's coming towards me and I know there's a buck following...

Do I shoot her and hope for the buck too    no let her go   dont scare her

She gets by just a few rows in less than 10 yrds away (I'm in full stink mode right from work no shower and work close's....covered by predtor camo)

here he come's a nice 120 class 8pt ohh baby   :bigsmyl:

The doe has passed and I get set to draw on this buck he'll easily be my best LB buck and I forgot 1 little detail

Just got in and Damon and I saw nothing but turkeys. On the way to our area we took a little round a bout way so  Icould drop Damon off, so he would not have a long walk, we saw at least 20 deer driving to our spot this am. The rainn stopped too early last night and they were all headed to bed by first light. Ken I used to maintain 102 stand sites. We have it down to 56 now and Damon has at least 5 others in an area he hunts, so 61 is all for now. Good Luck everyone!! Shawn

Got out tonight, had three turkeys feeding for about an hour about 80 yards away.
Half hour before dusk a HUGE doe came out and hung out broadside at 15 yards trying to figure out why her sixth sense was twitching. Once she cut my wind, she knew.

Hey everyone, I have two vacation days left to use, Iwas thinking Fri Nov 7th and Mon Nov 10th. Think these will work to see some bucks cruising thru the woods or should I pick earlier days? I can hunt every day anyways because I work third shift. I just want to spend the whole day in the woods a couple of times. Rob

being retired I also have had the ability to hunt daily. I find I just have a good time going out for 3 hours in the am and then for the last 3 hours. I have been seeing does and fawns but nothing in the way of a rut, no scrapes and not a lot of rubs. I did see some 5 doe's yesterday morning and they seemed to wind me, I came home, rewashed all the hunting togs and got ready for this morning. I did not hunt last night, I had some family chores to do. That rain over the weekend was a killer for sat, sunday morning it was so much light rain mist and fog, could not see over 35 yards till after 10 am...then it got suny and warm.

Wow is it wet out!! Moved one stand, and put up another. In between I still hunted through the thick cedars behind my house. I counted coupe on another doe. 20 yards broadside and she had no clue.
I set the new stand up in the cedars on the  edge of a bedding area. I have about ten trails that converge there to cross the barbed wire/stonewall. I even found two scrapes once I was done. Next N-NW wind I get, you know where I will be.

A not-so-usual west wind here and NO SNOW. I am going pound some ground and see if I can find any sign, then Im gonna set up downwind of a little valley with a creek in it. ALWAYS a lot of activity there. Last time I sat there I had a fisher ten feet away looking under rather large rocks.
Good luck to any that venture out.

Damon and I were into them tonight. I saw 11 deer four of which were bucks with one being a true monster. Due to some little health issue I have kind of been forced to hunt on the ground quite often this. I had a 140+" buck at 35 yards tonight and he nor his little heram of does new I was there. Damon saw 7 I believe one which was a buck. Things are coming around, i saw 3  fresh scrapes and lots of rubs this evening. Shawn

I found no less that fifteen scrapes. I saw five, only one that could have been a buck, but it wouldnt come out to let me see. I also saw a bunch of turkey, had a red squirrel bounce off my shoulder and saw numerous tree rats. Also found a rather large(4"+) bear track at a creek crossing.
Nice day in the woods.

No woods for me today, saw a few deer and some turkeys while I had baby duty. Decided to take a few practice shots while two does were at my apple trees. Three shots later, they still hadnt flinched.(They were 10-20 ft left of my target) I was curious to see how they would react at the shot, and they didnt.....at all. I was within 20 Yards of each of them. On top of that I hit where I wanted with each shot. Talk about a confidence builder!
I wont be out again until Saturday.
Good luck guys!

The past 1/2 a dozen times out I did not even see a deer, the alfalfa fields by me were sprayed with roundup and now there dead. I went looking for a different spot today and came up with a good one I had a lot of action tonight, I set up in my DB because it's all thorn apples and briers behind me is a creek and in front is a cattail swamp, it all ends up bordering a fully live alfalfa field. About five the action started with the distinct crunching of cattails, I new there were deer in front of me but it is so thick that I could not see them, when they come into view here they are well within range, I normally lay my bow on the ground in the blind but in this spot I had to be on my toes so I held it the whole time. There was a buck in the swamp I'm certain that he was chasing a doe they were crashing around and he was grunting, I could have shot four different bucks, but I have no tag left just a couple doe tags, the doe never showed but I'll be back to this spot for sure.

I had a shot at a small doe this morning, she was just the size deer I want to get yet. Some how my form fell all to pieces and I missed her clean at about 23 paces, deer have a way of doing that to me no matter how big or small they are, I guess that is why I love this sport so much, it gets my blood to boil

Must be the morning for misses Jim. I officially shot at and missed my first(a very big 4 pt) with trad gear. I actually drew on him twice, let down the first time due to a branch touching the limb. He caught me easing down and we had a ten minute stare down. He turned around and started walking away, gave me a 17 or 18 yard broadside shot. I was so focused on getting to anchor, I forgot to pick a spot. The first time I drew I was burning a hole in em....what a rush! I had another smaller buck(neat deer fork on one side, the other wraps behind his ear and comes out below his jaw) five yards from me the whole time! Then two minutes after the miss, another buck(small fork) cam strutting by at 15 yards. Needless to say, I was still shaking too much and could not load an arrow in time. Between that and the HUGE doe at five yards and the 23 turkeys that almost knocked me outta the tree at first light....WHEW!
To top it all off, I found my lost arrow. Shot it at a squirrel about a month ago. Found my arrow from today too. Then on my way back out, I found the left side of what looks like a decent 8 Pt from last year.
GREAT MORNING.

My hunting partner and I were in the Catskills again for our annual bowhunt. Sad part is this will be the last year there, house and property got sold. We also had a new property to hunt in Orange county (friend of Theo's brother-in-law). We each had three tags, Theo filled his, even passing on a spike after his buck tag was filled. I missed a small buck and had a five yard encounter with a doe that resulted in no  shot opportunities. All in all a great last Catskill hunt.

Me going camoless :

Finally taking a short break from hunting every day. Managed to fill one doe tag in CT and one here in NY. Been chasing deer around Jersey with my buddies...plenty of action.

The bucks are starting to become more accesible and scrapes are showing up in a few of our better hunting areas. Seen 2 nice six pointers and one small eight. Its only going to get better the next 3 weeks. Plan on hitting the woods hard until my wife and I leave for London, England to visit our daughter Thanksgiving week.

So much woods....so little time....below is one of my favorite "ambush locations" in Jersey. Plenty of action around this crossroads....taking today off to regroup, get some healthy food in me and head back out tomorrow morning....Keep the faith...

Congratulations on the deer Joe    I had quite the morning today, I got in my stand hung up my gear nocked an arrow then watched my quiver fall to the ground, so I climbed down grabbed the quiver climbed back up and proceeded to knock my arrow off the bow and watched that hit the dirt   :banghead:  I could of got "P"ed off but I just said the heck with it I ain't climbing back down and I'm not going to let a little thing like that spoil my day. I never did see a deer but I took hair off a black squirrel, in all the years I have hunted I have only seen 4 of them around here, I had another shot at a grey but missed that one to, but I did have a good time. I wish Joe hadn't decided to sleep in, it was dead calm with a hard frost leaves were falling like rain, you don't see a hand full of days like that to often around here. My wife watched five deer cross the road by her horse and head right to my stand that is by there, oh well maybe next time out.

I drilled a tree rat with a BH Sat morning after they tempted me for way to long.

Sun morning I had an absolutely perfect shot oppertunity on a 2 yr old 8pt only to put it thru his backstraps from 15 yrds away man did that suck alot I even entertained a thought about equipment that I haven,t had in a long long time....I went in the dirrection he went for the afternoon even though I know it was a non fatal hit

I had seen a 130 class 8pt in there last season and I found his bed which is where I ended up sitting for the afternoon...right IN his bed

Well I was right it was his bed only he's bigger than 130 now and coming straight at me 30, 20, 15, 10...crap why did I sit IN his bed now im standing in his bed and he's eyeballin the heck outta me at 10 steps and he's all of 140"s now with only 8pts still and clean. He doesn,t like me standing in his bed and kinda jumps outta there but gives me a 15 yrd shot.Granted he was lokking right at me but I drew when he couldn,t see me...

Maybe he ducked ,maybe I had some fever I don't know but it went just over his back.....now I'm really wondering about what I'm shooting this shouldn,t happen I practice nearly every day and can hit pretty good what gives,I havn,t thought about the other bow in yrs grrrrrrrrrrrrr   :banghead:

Way to go Damon    Shawn sent me the pic yesterday.

The shot was kinda wierd and I figured out the why...it looked like my arrow just bounced right off him. There was a loud bang and then it bounced straight back at first I thought it musta bounced off the tree behind him.My magnus 2 tip was bent a bit and I couldn't find a mark in the tree...besides it was a 2 blade with 660 grs behind it it woulda stuck in a tree

It had to be his rack as he ducked...he was lookin right at me...i shoulda tried to shoot under him or the white line like Brent

Bout an hour later on the same trail a real nice buck chased 2 doe all around my stand but they all eventually left on that same trail to the right without asking me to take one of em home.Last of all belive it or not, a hen golden pheasant. She was a beautiful little gal.I dont know who raised it or where she came from but she was way up on a mature pine and hardwoood mountain.I saw 2 bobwhite not far from there a while back which is unheard of there so someones raising birds.Pretty good morning in my book.3 more days for me to bowhunt, Im getting nervous.   :scared:

Deer are not moving well in the am or pm. Midday movement is pretty good even thou it is hot. The last two days the deer made their move with maybe 15 minutes of shooting light left. Yesterday I climbed down 10 minutes before dark to try and stalk a couple bucks that came out at 80-90 yards and as I picked up my bow after lowering it to the ground I turned and was looking at a nice 6pt. coming right at me, he saw me at the same time and was gone. Tonight I grunted in a nice 8pt. but he got side tracked by a doe about 20 yards away in a nasty thicket. As I was leaving i lowered my bow down I hear a grunt, I quickly pull the bow back up and here he comes, right into 8 yards. It was just to dark and I could not pick a hole. I actually had a text from Curt and than Damon and than another buddy of mine while waiting for him to leave. After 15 minutes he finally turned and walked away. It was 5:32 before he left. Hopefully the weather will turn cool because things are heating up for sure in the deers world! Shawn

Come on NY'ers, it is warm out but it is heating up big time. The next week the woods should explode!! Saw 8 bucks tonight 7 young'uns chasing a doe and Mr. Big just watching. Passed a 6pt. at 10 yards in hopes of the big guy becoming interested. He stayed out about 50 yards. I had 7 1.5 year olds acting stupid for about 20 minutes. The poor doe finally got down wind of me and took the show with her!! Get in the woods asap as it is getting good! Shawn

Over to Lymans my bow only area. Damon sat the same stand a little over a week ago and saw 4 bucks from it. It is in a bottom and overlooks a few apple trees and a small creek. I have killed 8 or 10 bucks form that stand. Shawn

well boys, I think I just blew it on the biggest buck in NY.   :banghead:    :banghead:    :banghead:

Some of you know about "HIM"... the buck I hunted all last year without even a sighting. Well yesterday at 1:30, I walked right into him at 20 yards. UGGG!!!!!   :banghead:    :banghead:  He was bedded in a blowdown in a wide open woods, all alone. No doe anywhere that I saw. I actually smelled him way before I saw him. I thought I spilled a bottle of Tinks in my pocket and stopped to check. As soon as I realized I hadn't spilled it, I knew instantly what was happening. I raised my head and made instant eye contact with the biggest buck I've ever seen. As soon as our eyes met he was GONE!

I actually thought he was dead and gone. Nobody has seen him or gotten trail cam pics of him this year (that they will admit to anyway) This is him last year, August of 2007.

He's significantly bigger this year with lots more sticker points off the G2 and G3 on both sides....

Makes me wish I still drank. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go cry.   :(

I'm heading out right now. I hunted yesterday morning but didn't see anything, and hadn't seen a deer for 7 days, so at 1 pm I went for a ride and spotted a doe and a real decent buck about 300 yards higher up in the woods than I usually see deer. I had to help my father-in-law all afternoon but my 14 year-old son went up there after school and had an encounter with a broken horned two point that was awesome. He went in and found a spot where he could see and set up under a Hemlock tree. The buck came in at 11 yards straight on. He then kinda saw Dylan and started turning broadside and walking away. Dylan whistled and he stopped at 18 yards but he didn't shoot because his self-imposed range is 13-14 yards. The buck left and Dylan saw where he was going and circled around in front of him two different times and had shots but didn't take them because he didn't feel they where good shots. I'm very proud of him  for the way he conducted himself and for going out on his own when I couldn't get out with him. He showed great restraint for not taking a bad shot. I'm hoping he'll get a shot soon as gun season starts next Saturday. Rob

Well been out most of the day and never saw any deer. This has been a very slow year for me and I've only missed going out three days. I know the deer are out there as I saw five different bucks on a trail camera the first week of the season. I really can't explain why unless we're overhunting it. We're not going to the same spots time and time again, we're mixing it up. I'm gonna take the morning off and go grouse hunting as I've seen a lot of them and Dylan's gonna go for squirrels. Hope everyone else is having better luck. Rob

They moved good mid day around here.
Title: Re: NYS southern zone hunters
Post by: Shawn Leonard on November 08, 2008, 07:28:00 PM
Mid-day movement has been good for a week or so due to the dark moon. I feel up to talking about yesterday afternoon. I got in late so i decided to sit right behind the farmers barn. I have had the bracket in the tree for 3 years but have only set the stand once before. I climb in around 3;45 and the wind is west and is supposed to change to SW towards dark, which would be perfect. At 4;15 I look over my left shoulder and there is a lone doe. She feeds along a bit and is gonna head down a fenceline that will lead her away from me. I blow the bleat a few times and she heads my way. I watch her feed right to me(8 yds.) and she cuts behind me and down a trail I had cut in hopes the deer would follow it, she did. at 4:30 I look back and hear stands a big eight point with a real white rack. He is doing basicall y what she just did, so I blow the grunt just once real soft as he is only 45 yards away or so. He heads my way, slowly he works his way inot about 18 yards. He suddenly turns into the thick, but just goes in until his shoulders and head are in, he starts eating leaves off what I believe is a raspberry bush. I have no shot, he turns and comes out but is head on, I have a small hole to shoot thru but he is quartering at me and I am only shooting 53-54#s, so I pass. All of sudden the wind changes and comes straight north, his head comes up, he licks his noise and fidgets. I know he is gonna go, he stamps his foot once and again. Now he is turning and leaving real quick, walking dead away. At little over 30 yards I bleat loud with my mouth to stop him, he turns to look over his left shoulder and come broadside, I pick a spot and let it go. It looked good but skips off the top of his back. He whirls and starts sneaking off a little run in the thicket. all of a sudden he blows and comes barrelling back out into the pasture. he stops at 25 yards, this time he picks me off and sees me draw. I shoot again but he was long gone by the time my arrow arrived. iI immediately went and checked for my first arrow, the only thing I can figure is when he was sneaking off after my first shot he came face to face with my arrow sticking in a small tree, he smelled it and bounded back out into the field. Great buck, would of been my best by any weapon. I missed him for a reason and today I found out about a real giant right where i am hunting, but I get plenty of buck tags and would be happy with both!!  :bigsmyl:   Shawn

i went to a little "secret" spot this morning near hoosic. its a small patch of woods that deer have to funnel through to get to their bedding area. i saw 2 does in there yesterday, and i found the trail that it looks like every deer uses to go through. there is no suitable trees for my climber so i made a ground blind and brought the longbow out for its first deer hunt. i setup for a 15 yd shot, so i said this is perfect.
i saw 2 does at 7:30. (same time that they came through yesterday) the does kept lookin behind them but veered off the run and moved past at 25 yds.
at 8:11 i looked to my left and saw a white muzzle lookin at me from 30 yds!! and then i saw the rack!!     i dont care much about horns, im more of a meat hunter. but this deer had to be 140 to 150 class!! it just surveyed the area, and turned to his right and slowly walked into the thicket. he obviously didnt like what he saw.
i was so rattled by seeing a buck like that i was useless for about 2 hours!!! i dont think i would have been able to shoot a 60 lb doe i was shakin so bad!!!

anyway, it was my first day ever hunting with trad gear, and i had quite an experience. to bad i couldnt have talked myself into doing it sooner.  :banghead:
i saw another buck chasing a doe in a field on my way home at 11 oclock. so get out there and sit as long as ya can, cause it on......

Today I took the brit out and we got her fix for bird hunting for a while.

Yep, apperently the only blind deaf and lazy hunter in the woods. At 8:30 I watched the guy walk in and try to set up. he walked all over a 40 yrd circle around him picking up branches and braking them with his foot to get them the correct "size". I whistled 3 times loudly and waved my arms several times trying to get his attention. Finally, I had enough and decided to leave him to his hunt and head to the house and grab a cup of coffee. The idiot looks at me as I walked out like I ruined "his" hunt, then proceeded to follow me out and leave completely, slamming his car doors defiantly as he left..... Unbelievable.   :knothead:

Here's the buck I took Sunday at 7:12 am. I was out with Peter Smith and was waiting awhile to  track him when I heard all kinds of brush breaking over by Peter and three deer came running past me. The area we hunt is so thick that a rabbit can't get trough parts of it ! It sounded like a tractor coming through the brush and I knew it could only mean one of two things. Either a buck was chasing a doe or Peter had just hit one. I was just thinking wow what a morning when I turned my cell phone and saw Peter's simple message " I GOT A DOE ". Peter had heart shot the doe and she only plowed through a little brush before it was all over.It was real cool to have a good friend take his first Trad deer with the same bow I had taken my first Trad deer with in the same area ! After dragging Peter's deer to the lane he helped my follow my deer. I shot the buck with my 1966 Grizzly , Purple Heart footed Cedar arrow with natural turkey feathers and a 125 grain eclipse head. Congrats to everyone else as well. PS another Trag Ganger has a story to tell (Swampbuck). Congrads Pete Bob and Adam

After sitting in the same stand from dawn ill dusk Sat without seeing a single deer and sitting again yesterday without seeing a deer I tried my future son in laws spot.

Hammered a Sm doe tha didn't go 40 yrds with my Centuar and a 2 blade magnus II.Got a complete pass thru and hope to maybe punch another doe tag tomorrow or better my buck tag...speaking of which had I been standing about 15 mins after I shot the doe a nice 2 yr old came in on the back side of the bush I had crawled up to.At that point he stopped 5yrds away dead down wind.Didn't blow outta there but didn't linger either

Bob stopped by with the deer they had shot yesterday very nice...

Now that I've broke my jynx this yr hopefully BobW will take care of his...good luck guys

I saw the largest buck of my life during my evening hunt today!  He came upwind ~25 yards behind me.  I stretched my head around the tree and there he was...not moving for about 10-15 minutes.  He looked like an elk!  He knew something was not right and finally walked away.  That is probably why he was so big!

I have never seen so many bucks (and very large) as I have this year (only 4 doe to ~12 bucks). Needless to say I have not yet harvested a deer in the three years hunting with my bow (home-made stick bow and arrows).  The first two years I even used my bow throughout regular season.  I'm trying to be patient and would be grateful for a deer of either sex.

I have learned much from reading the various forums (thanks) and believe my problem is I need to "aim small" (I can hit a squirrel but not a deer!) and I have a tendency to "peak" after my shot.  Trying to get this right before the season ends!

Cannot wait to tell the story of my first deer!

Good luck; three days left!

Dino

Same deer, same stand, same results. I missed the big four I have been chasing. Again. Saw four other bucks, including the one we now call operator-his one antler bends around his ear and ends up looking like a hands free mic. 37 turkeys and a very large owl too. Good day in the woods. Work is gonna drag tomorrow. Then maybe I can getout Thrusday and Friday.
They are chasing like crazy around here. Bleats, grunts....it all works!
Good luck everyone.

Fizzled out...I'm finally taking a 3 day break from bowhunting. I've been off since late October bowhunting CT and Jersey.

My area here in NY is 3 pt or better so I've been hitting Jersey hard with Bamboo and Southpawshooter. I took one doe and spike in Ct and last Saturday, a 4pt in Jersey. We called this deer...in the rain...and as he circled downwind, he offered 35 yd shot.

The last thing I heard was a dull thump and my hot pink feathers stuck in his heart area. Bamboo(aka Mike Robin) witnessed the shot as he was 20 yds off to my right. The buck bolted for maybe 50 yds..stopped...Mike doe bleated...he actually turned to come back...back legs gave out and he crashed to the ground.

Not a big rack like Bamboo's "last crossing" thread but a big bodied Mtn deer. Scott took a few pics before the fog rolled in, I took this shot back at camp...Keep the faith fellas and get out there with your bow during gun season. I'm heading back to Jersey rest of this week to cash in on one of those slammer bucks running around.

Gonna jump in real quick and tell you I am sure enjoying this thread. Grew up in Dutchess County and hunted Poughquag area. Nice to see the area is still good hunting.
Joe Skipp, you mention Bamboo as Mike Robin - would you happen to know if he grew up in Poughquag area? I Had a trapping buddy with same name and thought I would ask. Sorry to intrude on this thread

I have been into deer everyday. Yesterday morning I saw 3 sm. bucks and 3 does. Last night I saw 2 nice bucks, one a 2.5 6pt. and the other at least 3.5 year old 8pt. I have been having a hell of a tinme getting a shot, both these bucks were under 25 yards a couple of times and no shots. I have hunted everyday for the last 2 weeks except this morning. I slept in and I am kicking myself. Damon and I sat from 5:30 yesterday morning until dark. Those all day sits are tough but we each were unto deer. Damon sat 3 different stands and I sat two. Gun openes Sat. but we have the bow only area so we will continue to bow hunt. I will hunt with the shotgun Sat. morning and that is it. I will catch up to one of the 17 different bucks I have seen so far. Shawn

I should also say that the actual breeding does not seem to be started yet as these bucks were all together. I think we are still 4 or 5 days away in my arae before it explodes. I have until monday and than back to work for 3 days and than a major surgery, and I do not know if I will be able to hunt after words, so I best kill something in the next week!! Shawn

I'm going out at 1:30. I'm getting my 15 year old son, Ben out of school early for one more try. Boy, was he surprised when he found out he was getting out of school early to go hunting with me.
The deer where I'm hu8nting seem to start moving at around 2:00- 3:00. I have exclusive rights to the 80 acres I'm on, so I'll just keep right on trying. My tailbone is so sore from sitting on a 5 gal. bucket!

Here is where I'm hunting. I have been on the edge of the woods hunting. Should I be in the woods more? I see them in the field but have a hard time getting them close to my blind. The blind has been sitting there for a good week. There is a lot of sign in the field and at least 6 places where I've seen deer coming out of the woods into the field. Actual deer trails. Should I try to get them closer to me in the field or go into the woods where they seem to be spending more time?
The deer are coming out of that center island where the gold tree is and crossing to the right where my blind is.To the left of the gold tree is another small field that the deer cross into that center island. The field is roughly 45 yards across. They are on their way to a stream that is close by. Any ideas or suggestions? Been trying bleat cans and grunting. Also trying doe pee.
Thanks, Brian

I sat that rd spot last night even though I think it'd be better in the morning. It's actually 10yrds from the rd and 20yrds from the deer Xing sign. There's a laneway that access's the field from the rd and than 1 that connects the 2 fields between the hedgerow and I was hunting both those crossings hoping to catch 1 crossing the rd from the park.

I saw 2 bucks and 2 doe's but they headed towards the candyland stand which overlooks an apple tree in the hedgerow.

Had a pickup slow rt down lookin than turn around to look again so I figured there must be a good buck in the field just outta my view.

3rd time by the guy stops just down from the sign and gets out first looking under his truck till another car passed than he quickly was heading my way to have a look see on posted land....

At 5 yrds and me on the ground I say "excuse me" and the fella about fell over...scared the crap right outta him.He didn't have much to say and left after a quick "sorry didn't see ya"

The 2nd buck I saw was after that and he was a 2,1\\2 yr old so he didn't mess me up to bad I guess....no shots where offered but I'll probably bow hunt that spot during the gun season at some point. It's too close to a house and the rd to use a cannon so I should be all good

Brian,

I'd set your blind up inside of that little island. It sounds like they cross the field to get into it. another thought is,when you think "fields" also think "corners".....Usualy the corners of fields have the heaviest deer sign.

Without looking at it in person,my guess is that they are waiting untill dark to come into the field. If you set up your blind inside of that island, you might get a chance at one waiting inside for it to get dark.Another thought is moving your blind into the woods alittle more. Lots of times they will browes in the woods untill it gets dark, then come out into the field.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!! Stick a BIG one!!!!!!!!!!    :archer:

Made it out this morning. Nothing from the stand. Got down around 9 as I had baby duty at 10 and still hunted through the cedars. Walked up on a yearling doe. Ten minutes and 70 yards later I had a doe run by me followed by what appeared to be another doe grunting. I never saw antlers, and had no shot anyway.
Then, as I step out of the woods and into the yard, a doe takes off INTO my yard. Followed closely by the 4 pt I shot at twice.
Boom stick opens tomorrow, but Im seriously thinking about bow hunting the cedars. We shall see.
Hope the rest of you saw deer. Good luck if you are headed out in the am.

I was fortunate enough to get two deer with my 1972 Grizzly, but I feel like I have unfinished business.I had today off but saw no deer but that didn't matter I just enjoyed the day and the quietness of the archery season, I stayed in my stand extra late because I hated to leave knowing that tomorrow will be a lot different. I need to find a spot that is free of firearms so I can hunt in peace, now I can't wait for the late season

i missed my chance.i sat in the woods ALL day.Made a nice ground blind next to a dead fall .i piled brush all around it and left a few opening to shoot thru.Five to five tonight ,I got up and started stretching and packing up.You guessed it.A real nice buck came in on the blind sidethru the thick stuff to about 30yds.We saw each other and one of us took off.The other went out of the woods muttering bad things to himself. If I only would have waited that five minutes to call it a day.Oh well ,such is bow hunting.

I had a great day today.I got to my stand at 6:30 this morning and I could hear a buck crashing through the woods grunting chasing a doe but I couldn't see him. Almost an hour later the doe came by me at full speed with a big 8 pointer on her tail. He chased her around my stand for 5 minutes but I had no shot because he was moving way to fast for me. All of sudden another 8 pointer joins the chase. This deer was a pig.He had at least an 18" spread. These deer passed my stand within 5 yards twice. I still didn't shoot.I didn't feel comfortable shooting a deer moving that fast. All I can say is what a day. With the opener for gun tomorrow, I can only hope I see one of them in the morning.

I saw one lone doe at 7:30 this morning and than as I walked out I saw two bucks crossing the power lines. Another lone doe at 4:30 this evening. I got out of my stand a bit early as damon had shot another doe. The hit was back and we are waiting until morning to track her. I know we have rain coming but we are still gonna wait. As I was walking out I checked the pwer lines again, no less than 20 deer spread out over 200 yards. A little chasing going on but I think the real breeding phase is still several days away. I am fortunate that I have 140 acres in the bow only area to hunt plus another 20 that I picked up in the bow area near by. I am gonna go out with the boom stick in the morning as it is supposed to be raining and I just washed and prepped all my bow clothes to make an assualt all day sunday!! Best of luck to all!! Shawn

damon and I went out this am. I almost got blown out of the tree i was in. I moved to a new one. I saw nothing damon saw 2 does and one presented a close shot but he was hoping a buck would follow. I am gonna hunt Monday,Tues, and Weds. after work, which only gives me a little over an hour on stand but I have 15-20 stands I can get to in 5 minutes from work. Surgery on Thursday and since so many have PM'ed. I have a hernia, lifting stupid weight. Doc said I may be able to bow hunt right away as long as I go light and take it easy climbing. So hopefully I am back in the woods by this coming Sat. Shawn

I had a pretty good day today, I had to go into work early this morning, so I was a little late getting out. I saw no deer early but when I went out later this afternoon I saw four. One of them I saw from the stand but the other three were on a stalk. I was cold with the high winds today the cold cut right through you. I decided to get down and look around the walking was quiet so I thought I might have a chance at a deer from the ground. I didn't go 400 yards when I saw a deers head going across in front of me about 50 yards, I dropped to one knee and nocked an arrow. I saw two more after that one, it turned out to be a doe and two fawns, I crept within 20 yards of one of the little ones and was going to shoot when it walked off to were I couldn't get the shot I wanted. None the less it was an exciting experience.

Bad news I have to stay under 50#s and hunt from the ground. Funny, Cindy and I saw a huge 10 pt. cross the road on the way to the hospital this am. Hope all of your bow seasons went well in NY. I grew up in Chautauqua County on the western end of the state, and return there each year to hunt the rut. I had a monster 8 pt under me at 8 yards on the 3rd day of my New York bowhunt, but he never offered a good shot. I'm pretty sure that this was the buck I shot over the back of at 12 yards the previous year across the road. The weather was sunny and nearly 70 degrees for the first 4 days, and generally nothing was moving except for early morning and the last half hr of the day (the big guy showed up at 4:30 PM, sunset was about 5). I decided that I'd give that stand a two-day rest to let it "air-out", even though he did not obviously smell me.

Unfortunately, bad weather (rain and snow) was moving in, and to top that I was developing a nasty toothache. Fearing an abscessed tooth, I was able to get in to see my parents' dentist the next day, and got to my least good-looking stand about 2 PM, in my T shirt (again, about 70 degrees). After getting set and not 15 minutes later, I heard a deer marching to me through the dry leaves. As he came through the trees towards me I saw that he was a small 8 pointer. I had a decision to make - pass and take my chances with a bad tooth and terrible weather with the hope at getting a shot at the big guy, or the bird-in-the-hand deal. I decided that if he did not stop for me, I would not try to stop him. However, when he was broadside at 12 yards he caught a nose full of the James Valley doe-in-heat scent that I had out on that side of my stand. With his head facing away from me and front leg forward, the decision was automatic. Perfect pass through shot, heart and lungs (or at least the lungs facing me). He went maybe 25 yards, and ended up on an old skid road that we could drive the tractor right up to.

A few days later when I went to pull the stand under which I saw the big 8 pointer, I could see (in the new snow) that he had been back, and one of his scrapes near the stand was now almost wide enough for me to lay across! Oh well. Now I'm holding my breath that the orange coated gang-bangers don't get him so I can try next year. So far he has made it through the first week, and heavy snow falls are hampering the orange coats!

Woops, I thought I cancelled the posting of my picture last night when checking that it was not too big, but apparently it got through on the previous page.

I saw nothing this morning but this afternoon was full of excitement. When I got back to my stand there were lots of fresh tracks under it, I thought dang I should of stayed here. I was in the stand about an hour when I saw two deer walking up one of the logging roads, they looked like they had no intention of coming my way so I decided to call, I gave three calls on the can and one of them turned and headed my way. It turned out to be a small buck and I have no buck tags left so I was just content with watching it feed around my stand inside of ten yards for about ten minutes or so. About a half hour later I saw four more deer feeding along the roadway and they turned and headed my way, I decided to take the first deer that came into range, I have never killed a deer during the gun season with a bow so I'm not to choosy.  I guess I have too much patience because I could have shot a couple times but I let it come, just as I was going to draw it looked up at me and we locked eyes, I froze and just waited. The doe took a jump and stopped at 20 yards broadside and for what ever reason turned it's head away, so I drew picked my spot and proceeded to shoot low   :banghead:  Well no harm done, I just hope I get another chance this season this gun season hunting is tough with everyone keeping the deer spooked.

I'm really liking this gun season trad hunting, it forces me to sit still and I'm seeing more deer that ever. I saw eight deer this morning, I messed up on one I won't go into details. The wife's working I'm going to take a nap then go back out   :bigsmyl:  What a life

Where did everybody go?
Found some nice fresh tracks today after yesterday's rain. Followed the tracks to some fresh rubs. Moved my blind today to try and intercept them . Taking my 8 year old son with me to sit for as long as he can. I'm excited again!  :archer:

I'm still at it, I was able to get out on Wed afternoon, I saw two but they were moving pretty quick. I have a four day weekend, well kind of. If it snows I work but I'm going as much as I can. My daughter rolled my Jeep on Tues, she is fine just a little shook up so I'm down one vehicle that is making things more difficult but I'll keep plugging away right till the bitter end

thank god she is all right. I still go out some days, but with the cold and we have lots of snow. It is very hard for me. I got a bad right leg that goes out and I already have fallen a few times. So I now wiat for it to be light and then walk to one of the blind on the back hill. The NY hunters left yesterday and they took a 10 point  and a 4 point with the gun. But I know we should support all hunters but it gets me how some hunt, they use two 4 x 4 to ride across the back mountain and hope there activity will push the deer up the hill to there other guys. Guess it works for them. They also will take the 4 x 4 and park them within 30 yards of a blind I am sitting in. they see me on my own land and wave and then will go less than another 30 yards and sit down. I am hoping we get a warm up, also 2nd rut in the week of bow and BP.

I'm going to wait till the late season, took a break for some lunch yesterday (we had Thanksgiving dinner late) when I got back to my woods it was like a blood bath, guys must have come through and shot it up real bad. I was ticked off now the deer movement will be minimal, they were moving good on there own because I just go in and sit with my bow and then leave. Now that they were pushed they'll lay low for a while, so I'll wait a week.

Glad to hear she's ok Jim,kinda sucks that it happened I'm sure it was an eye opener for her,it is for most kids....I've got 3 daughters been there

It's been slow huntin besides I've taken a couple other than the doe with my LB and I've really only got 1 spot that I'd have a half a chance with my bow so there hasn't been much to talk of...still look every once in awhile
