just curious? do you guys carry a backpack when hunting, especially spot n stalk or do you just carry a few items in a fanny pak or cargo pockets?? i have a backpack, which i use mainly in the winter to store layers of clothing and additional items when hunting all day...but i also have a fanny pak that ive never used. the reason i ask the question is wednesday im gonna be huntin all day at the local refuge for hogs and you can only drive so far in before you have to walk a good 1/2 mile. i usually carry a pak here but its usually cooler( its gonna be 87 degrees wed.)so im wondering should i stuff my pockets or carry the fanny pak? trying to go comfortable as possible but i also tend to over plan:) and bring a little extra

really like my nimrod pack. thursday and friday I will be hunting mulies/pigs and plan on having it on most of the time unless I sit in a blind. I think for moving and hunting a quality lumbar/fanny pack is good, lets air move around you and keeps the back from sweating.

I have used both over the years and like both, but nowadays, it seems like I carry too much stuff into the woods to fit in a fanny pack. So for me it's a backpack. Stuffing your pockets is a good way to lose stuff.IMO

For what you are talking about doing I would say backpack. That way you can carry water, lunch, and all the other items you may need for the day.
If you were just going to hunt a stand for a couple of hours I would go with the fanny pack. I switch back and forth all the time depending on how long and where I intend to hunt.

I go with a traditional (as in, american forerunners) rucksack, which I guess is akin to a back pack

I think basic items; like fire starting items; and small yet simple items; like space blankets and ponchos- should be carried in your pockets in either case.
You might put down your backpack for a nap; or slip and fall and end up in the dark without your backpack.
Chances are though; you will keep your pants.
People don't get into crisis intentionally when hunting; they get into accidentally.
I carry much in my catquiver; but always have the basics in my pockets for survival....

I like the traditional Haversack. Just the right size for the items that I carry, plus I prefer the shoulder strap to something hanging off my belt. My backs for toteing arrows.

I carry a small pack, I've used a fannypack. But much prefer a small pack.

This is about 1k sq in. It has a great harness system and not a belt fanny pack but more of a moutaineering pack. Holds more than I need for a full day hunt.And I mean sunrise to sunset.All the standard stuff plus a book,lunch, rain gear, wool vest,......... nimrod N-325 pinnacle pack.

Small back pack here, at all times, with all the essential:
An extra bowsring
Flash lights (2)
Fire starting kit
GPS
Knives
Rain stuff
Water
Extra glove
F-Manny

i carry a possible bag over the shoulder. have everything i need plus some more should something serious happen. I have 2 i like to carry. a camo one for bow hunting, and a horse hide leather one for muzzleloader. both have pruners, knife, flint/steel, rubber gloves, Suture needles, ammo, predator calls, grub, etc

I use both a back pack and a fanny pack depending on what sort of hunting I do. To be honest I have lots of packs. Big ones, small ones, fanny packs, belt packs, day packs, rucksacks etc. I am a sucker for a cool pack, bag or other. I have two that I use frequently. I have a pretty good size back pack that I can stuff with extra clothes and my ghillie suit. I have a buckle-on quiver that goes on it and my hunting chair also straps on the back. I use this when I will be moving around to multiple places, or have a long walk in to a sitting spot.
I have a fanny pack with shoulder straps that I use when I am going to hunt a treestand. It is pretty good size and holds everything I need. It also has straps on the top and bottom to lash down spare jackets and other clothes.
Sounds like your hunt may be a spot-and-stalk type of deal. If you go with the fanny pack, I have a tip to pass on to you. I have always had trouble with waist belt type fanny packs slipping down around my hips. I spent as much time pulling my pack (and my pants) up as I seemed to hunt. I bought a cheap pair of wide suspenders (camo with spring clips) and put those on the webbelt of the fanny pack. Now I don't have to keep the belt tight and it stays up.
What really seems to be the point is, how big a bag do you need to comfotably carry everything you might need on the hunt. Hope this helps. Good luck on your hunt!

yeah it looks like im gonna stick with the backpack...funny things is i thought i carried too much stuff.....but looks like us trad guys think the same....as in being prepared:)

If you are only driving up to a refuge and then walking a mile or so you should be able to get by with a small backpack. How are you packing the beast out? Are you going to have a pack frame to do this back at your truck?

I've got a Horn Hunter big pack (1850cuin) and my Hydration pack from Badlands (1100cuin). For short day sits and times I'm out in the woods, I use the hydration pack, it holds everything I need and thensome. For day trips outside of areas that I'm not familiar with, I carry the big pack with a small basic survival kit (bivy,tarp,meal,etc).
Still trying to decide on a multiday pack, but I keep looking back at Kifaru...
Can never have enough packs. :thumbsup:

Packs are like bows, one's never enough! I use a fanny pack as often as possible and try to carry the bare minimum as we tend to bring way too much stuff most of the time. I have small fanny packs for short light trips all the way up to my Bison Gear - Lost River which is a big fanny pack that can haul most and has a game bag as well. For bigger trips and if I'm hauling alot of camera gear I'll use day packs all the way up to mountain packs. The terrain and area also dictates what I will carry. In wilderness one needs all the survival items in the back 40 for most of us 95% of that stuff should stay at home.
