We have some amazing bladesmiths and some very talented beginners on this site and I think it’s about time to kick off the Official 2007 TradGang Knife Swap!!
The way I see this working is we set a deadline (say the end of July) for people to make the knives. At that point, everyone emails me their address and the number of knives they made and would like to swap. Once I have all the information I’ll randomly draw names from a hat and email everyone who to send their knives to.
Doing it this way avoids the problem we’ve had with the arrow trades the last few years of people saying they’d participate, but then not being able to due to whatever circumstances that came up. This way if you make 3 knives, you’ll get three knives and if you only have time for one, that’s OK too! :)
So what do you think? Anyone interested in expanding your knife collection?
EDIT: Swap date set for end of July!
-
-
Im Game, throw my name inta' the hat
-
I'm in too. So, we just email u our info at the end of May?
-
I'm in! We have a similar thing running on The British blades forum. Everyone makes a knife with another member in mind & then makes a knife specifically for them. The person running the show, then gets to pick who gets what!
-
I've got to start making knives, I want in in this one!! I will never meet the quality of all you guys knives in time...some great knife builders here indeed!!
Jake
-
Hey all you knife making dudes, please see my post "Trad ganger first"....Much regards...David
-
That sounds great. I would love to participate but I would never make the deadline. I have no knives in the works currently and it takes me a minimum of 6 months to get one done. :knothead: Guess i'll get started on one for the 2008 swap.
-
Dead, the date ain't set in stone yet! 6 months may be a bit long to run this, but if that's what guys want...
John, that's the idea. Once I get all the info from the participants after the deadline I'll start drawing names and sending out info to everyone.
It'd be cool to see some build-a-longs for some of these too!
-
What about us non-talented types? :saywhat:
-
Good idea, I will be in next year's swap!
F-Manny
-
I'll talk to my boy. I think he'd love this. Are you looking at people making the blades and handles or are bought blades acceptable? I'm just curious; I know Ru will want to make his own.
Exciting project, Jeremy
Aram
-
I don't see why we should discriminate against bought blades. This is a good oportunity to try something new and if it gets someone started on the path to making knives... We usually get a few first-timers in the arrow swap.
From a PM a few hours ago:
"Man Jeremy,
I know there are guys who make some sweet stuff gonna get an old steak knife blade glued into a piece of antler . . . But it oughta be interesting! I'm in! "
-
Man - now if I just had some talent as a knife maker I would jump in on this one. Sounds like a great idea.
-
Yup, I'm in......I hope the guys like folders...
Jeff
-
heck yes put me in. loyd
-
I might be interested
-
This looks to be shaping up nicely! I've been asked if maybe we should move the date another 2 months to give people more time. That'd take it to the end of July (when my first child is due! :scared: )
Sound good to everyone?
-
Sounds good to me. I'll be a little less of a rookie by then. Thanks for startin this Jeremy.
-
Why not. If I screw up a blade, I can always whip out a Helle or similar.
Carl
-
Great Idea!
-
Jeremy, sounds good to me! Please put me in the hat also. I was thinking of how to do just such a thing as this only a couple a weeks ago....sounds like you got it all worked out.Good job!
-
Great to see this much interest Jeremy, count me in.
-
Jeremy, I'm in!
-
Me too. Sounds like a blast!
-
Finished! :D
-
Rob, Now that's just not fair! I haven't even gotten into the shop yet - o'course, the shop is currently under 3" of water...
This swap is getting bigger and bigger by the hour!
-
Man , I gotta get in on this one . I would love to swap knives with some of the talent on here. Drew
-
i'm in....
-
Sounds good to me!
Scott
-
I'm in!
-
I'll jump in. Does anybody have anything against
stone blades?
-
I'd like to participate. It'll have to be a helle from me if that's okay. If I'm able to make more than one by then, maybe I could designate a few for those who don't make 'em but like 'em just the same. Mike
-
Count me in. The idea of some forge-a-longs & assemble-a-longs is a great idea. I'd love to see how different people build their knives...forging, stock reduction, hidden tangs, scales, etc...Doc
-
I am in I just ordered a blade and will see what i can do never built a knife but i am going to try .
-

Absolutely not! I love 'em! I just wish I could make them. My attempts at knapping so far have just left me bleeding holding something not even decent enough to be used as a blunt! :)
-
yeah I know what ya mean. I'm not that skilled at it yet myself except for the bleeding part.
LOL, I've wathced a video or two and got some pointers from a good friend Linc who is on here from time to time. I do know a few very good knappers though that I think I could persuade to make me a blade or two if thats ok?
-
Count me in also!
-
Hey are you guys going to show pics when ya get them done?<><
-
Ok, count me in!!!
This is gonna be a blast!
-
sticshooter,
I think pictures should required (if you can post them) so everyone can see all the unique works from first timers to the pros like Doug! That's part of the fun of this whole deal...Doc
-
Ok, i'm in for a run at this. I'm a lover of a good knife, and what excitement to get some work from others hands, Just don't make to much fun of my hacking.
-
Been a lot of years since I made up a knife, but I found a box of blades when i remodeled my shops, and i've been thinking on it. I guess I'll take a swing at this. Here's two I dug out this morning. I made these way back when I was muzzle loading. For me, that started out in Southern Ohio, and we weren't "traditional"... we were those crazy guys who still used those funny guns. Weren't any production guns or anything like that... we just had old family guns and wouldn't stop using them till they wore out... which they never did.
Anyway, if you look real close on the first one below, you'll see a little tit on the bottom of the guard. That was for seating a bullet in the barrel before you cut off the patch. I'd like to say the blade was mottled because it's damascus, but that's just 40 years of blackpowder specs and living in a sheath on the strap of a pouch.

Ok Tippit I agree. Here is one I made for this swap. Not sure what the woods are? I know there is maple and the cap is made from Dahl Sheep horn with spacer.<>< <>< (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v83/fishrofmen1/DSCN1333.jpg)
-
well... since i'm sitting here wating for a blade to get out of the oven (i just quenched it in my fireplace) I guess i HAVE to be in!
-RHiNo
-
Nice looking knives guys! Dick, the mottled blade in the top pic is called character! I like when tools can tell a story...
Rhino, the more the merrier!
-
Jeremy, I'm in for 2. I've got a nice 3-4" flint blade that I'll finish up and a neck knife with sheath. I'll get to work on both. THX DON
-
Great idea,Put me in the hat.
Bob T.
-
alrighty then! i'm in, got one in mind already ;-)
-
Jeremy & Rob
Fun challenge! I'll make mine from some material picked up at Texas Sweat. Ofcourse not quite fair since I'm there the week befor you guys :) Doc
-
Heck by the end of the week it could even be from a fossilized T-shirt for the handle :)
-
Count me in!
-
While I've got to many things started to start yet another I wouldn,t mind doing this perhaps next yr or next time around anyway LOL I do actually have a started blade from a file that wouldn,t take trhat much to finish but I,ve got to finish a project for another fella before I can get back at my own stuff.Heck I haven't finished my other 3 BH's yet and it's been a full 2 yrs since I started.... somethin about paying customers get to use the machine time before me LOL
more pics would be cool hint hint
-
Do stone knives count? If so I'm in for a couple!
Thanks
Matt
-
I think stone knives would be at the top of the food chain, I mean list :) That is a beautiful knife, pounding hot steel is easy compared to that...Doc
-
my dad makes knives by stock removal, but because of sports and homework, my rate of knives is about 2 a year from scratch, so do kit knives count?
-
hey matt that is awesome you clever bugger. :notworthy:
-
Have to get Mr.Vic's big honkin' coffin bowie done first and then I'll be in.

I'm In.
I haven't made any since before hunting season, and this is a good excuse to start up again.
Bryan
-
This is really great guys. Kudos to Jeremy for thinking it up!
I've finished another one, by the way :D
I'm hoping to have 6 done & ready by the end of July
-
Count me in! I'll try to post a pic when I decide which one is coming out of the bull pen.
-
I'm in for at least two. It would be neat to have a place where pics of all could go. Thanks. Larry
-
This is REALLY taking off! As for pics, we may want to just keep posting them on this thread... no need to turn TradGang into a knife forum! Sorry Terry! :D
-
I believe I'll sign up for this one!
-
Just got my first blade of two today for this trade, thought a nice boot knife was in order for this project. Have no idea the steel, bought it off a friend and tore it down and reshaped the handle. (http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f29/mrviclisco/IMG_1747.jpg)
-
Put my name in,thanks,Leon
-
Is it too late for me to be in?
If not I want in too
Jake
-
When do we have to be signed up I wont know until closer to the deadline. Since the swap date is set for the end of july is that when the sign up is or do we need to be signed up before then?
-
Sign me up also, I have a few I just finished to trade.
-
There's no deadline for signing up, just for finishing the knives. I have a list of names going and as July approaches I'll send out an email requesting your info (address and # of knives) then start drawing names and sending the info back to everyone.
This is getting bigger than I thought it would! Should be one heck of a batch of knives. I kind of wish it'd be feasible for everyone send them to me first so we could get one pic with all of 'em, but that wouldn't work out too well.
-
Count me in for a couple, here's a pic of a knife I'm finishing up for Marblesonac, He furnished the Damascus steel blade, and told me to make it look real old, just have to cut off the eye guard and seal it and it's done and off to shell for some beadwork and a sheath. I'll probably make the trade knives from file steel though as this Damascus is very, very expensive.

I had the time & the weather cooperated on Sunday afternoon so it was a perfect time to start forging the Knife Swap blade. Here's a few pics. of the process. It's gonna be a hammer/forge finish hunter w/wrought iron fittings . . . Here's a quick forge along.
(http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/9997/1000491lj8.th.jpg) (http://img140.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000491lj8.jpg)
Bring a bar of 1084 tool steel up to forging heat

Start the point tapers, no clips here forge 'em!
(http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/2213/1000477mq6.th.jpg) (http://img263.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000477mq6.jpg)
Put in the counter bend.

Back in, get it hot! Ya can't forge cold steel!
(http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/4971/1000482vy9.th.jpg) (http://img171.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000482vy9.jpg)
Working in the edge bevels.
(http://img124.imageshack.us/img124/4427/1000494ws6.th.jpg) (http://img124.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000494ws6.jpg)
Gettin' there now, time to go to the hot cutter.
(http://img124.imageshack.us/img124/3686/1000499vy5.th.jpg) (http://img124.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000499vy5.jpg)
Roughed blade cut off the main bar. Need to draw out (stretch) the tang now.
(http://img53.imageshack.us/img53/4732/1000503fn0.th.jpg) (http://img53.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000503fn0.jpg)
Here it is after some 2 hours at the forge & 7 hours in the annealing medium (pulverized lime).
Now it's off to profiling, sanding, fitting the wrought iron guard, butt cap & handle etc. Still plenty hot! New makers remember, black iron doesn't mean it's cold!!!!!
Click on a pic to enlarge.
Guys, if this post is too large delete it, & I'll figure out how to re post it w/ links.
Larry

Excellent stuff Larry!!
I started in on a knife for this trade while the finish was drying on a few handles. I'm taking pics along the way and will post 'em when I get farther along... AFTER I get back from Texas Sweat! :bigsmyl:
-
See ya in a couple a days Jeremy! Bring some goodies to ogle :D
-
I'll just have one with me Rob... I end up giving them away quicker than I make them. STILL don't have one for ME! The one I'm bringing is for Doc (tippit) though he don't know it yet! :jumper:
How many are you bringing? :D
-
Erm....5
Only 3 are my own though (one's my own, one for Curtis & one for Gary. They don't know 'bout 'em yet though :D )
One Gerber Fatty, folding skinner as a backup & a tiny swiss army knife that I've made a neck-pouch for, for Vance as a thanks for sorting out hotels & generally being great :D :D
-
Hey I'd like in on this also.Sounds like fun.Eddie
-
Good luck out there Jeremy. Put it on 'em!! :archer:
Larry
-
I`ll do a small hunter or skinner in damascus with a elk antler handle for the trade..
-
What a learning thing for a beginner.. here's the second handle i did up on this knife . This one is osage. It still needs a lot of work to finish. Antler finger guard, inlays, and shealth.. What fun learning. (http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f29/mrviclisco/IMG_1751.jpg)
-
Be careful Vic, you're gonna get hooked!!! :goldtooth:
Larry
-
It is a SICKNESS! REALLY IT IS!<><
-
That sure is some puurrtty yella wood there Mr. Vic.
-
Can us Canucks play..if so I'd like to get it on this, sound like fun. I have a few already but this is the incentive I need to make some new ones.

Nice job, Mr. Vic!! Cool damascus, RickD.
If I could figure out how to post pics, I'd put some up. Old dogs, new tricks-? Larry
-
Vic that looks great. ya did a great job matching up the antler to the osage. Rick you really like the D blades don't ya? They are nice and like what ya did with the antler.<><
-
I get to work hammering a blade or two since I just quit my job.
-
I spent some time Sunday (Saturday?) out in the shop and took a bunch of pics while messing around with three knives
Legal Disclaimer: :readit: This is how I do it. It's by no means the best way and probably not the safest way, but it works for me. Proper safety equipment is a must for anything involving hot steel, sparks, grinding... pretty much everything involved in making a knife!
Build Along (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v212/fliksr/Knife%20build%20along/)
I tried to keep them in order and except for the two picturtes showing me darkening the edge and scribing a line I did. Start and the end and work your way back.
When I want to make a new knife design I normally sketch it out and then make a wooden template to see if I like how it feels. That's the first pic - what I'm going for here. I don't trust myself to forge real thin blades or complicated ones (like the guthook) so these will be stock reduction blades. Both will be clay-cloated and etched and I'll show how I do that as well.
I trace the template out on the bar stock and cut it out with an abrasive cut-off blade in an OLD tablesaw (don't use one you actually like!!) Then use a grinder and files to get it to shape.
To file the shoulders I bought a file jig recently, but before that I used a homemade one consisting of two pieces of hardened scrap steel.
I leave the edge about the thickness of a dime before hardening and tempering. The extra will be removed during the final grind and is useful to have: helps prevent cracking/warping during the quench, enough 'sacrificial' steel that if you burn off some carbon during the heat you'll get down to good steel, thin steel cools very quickly - leaving it thicker gives you a little more time to get it from the forge to the quench medium.
Something people need to keep in mind: sharp corners and quencing hot steel in oil is a sure way to crack a blade. Make sure all corners are rounded.
After cleaning them up after hardening I put 'em in the oven at 400F for an hour to draw back the temper.
This was done in the morning. I would have done the final grind in the afternoon, but had to not make any noise b/c my wife was sleeping. I'll get some more done this weekend and give an update.
Oh, the guthook blade is for a TradGanger who works two floors down from me. I had his daughter in one of my bow hunter ed classes a few years back. One is for the trade and then third blade I decided to do as an after thought. I need a new neck knife, but it will probably go to the father of a friend who's being treated for cancer.
-
This will be fun. Count me in. Chad
-
Time for the next bit. After the blades come out of the oven (see the link in my last post) I go back to the 1x30" belt grinder and start doing the final grind. Go slow and don't wear gloves. Now isn't the time to overheat the blade and ruin the temper. I start with 80 grit and move my way up to 600 grit, taking the time to get rid of all the grind marks from the previous grit.
After that I hand rub the blades out to 600 grit (normally I start with 400). Here's the set up I use:
The sandpaper is wrapped around a piece of stiff phenolic. I use a little bit of honing oil to keep the 600 grit paper from clogging and only rub in one direction.
Here's what it looks like when I'm done:
This gives a nice satin finish to the blade and is as far as I go with most knives, but if you went through the other pix you know I'm going to put a little lipstick on this pig. The back of the blade was coated in fireplace mortar (rated to 3000 degrees) before I hardened it. So the blade has a hard edge and a softer spine. Now time to show the temperline off.
I etch the blades in a dilute acid mix (3 parts water to 1 part acid) The acid is just from the local Radio Shack.
I do about a 30 second etch, then rinse it in water and wash it off real well with some soap and water (Irish Spring if you must know). The key here is to neutralize the acid.
At this point you'll notice the blade looks exactly to opposite of what I'm going after - the edge is much darker than the spine:
I use a metal polishing paste (Flitz or Semichrome will work) to clean up the blade. The harder metal at the edge will release the oxides faster than the softer steel. Rub blade with your fingers in a circular motion, being careful not to spend too much time in one area.
This is what you end up with:
That's it! That's my secret, now you all know! I do have to thank Terry Primos for explaining to me how to do the etch and polish to really show the temper line (hamon) off. He's a phenominal bladesmith.
-
Terry's one of the best! I hear he's stopped bladesmithing right now. It's a tough way to earn a living.
That rubbing out part is the bit I hate!!! Seems like it's never gonna end!
All kinds of techniques & "tricks" to finishing & adding patinas to the steel, iron etc. . .
Nice tute Jeremy!!
Where'd you get your filing jig? Mine's like your original, 2 pieces of hardened (brine quenched) steel w/ 2 bolts & lock nuts to hold everything tight.
Larry
-
Filing jig???? No one told me anything about no filing jig. I always wondered how you guys did that stuff. OK how do ya make one cheap? C'mon give it up guys. <><
-
Frank, it's just a gizmo to help keep both sides of the step downs on a ricasso or tang even as you're filing them to shape.
Mine's just two pieces of 1/4" X 1 1/2" steel approx. 2 1/2" long. I drilled one & tapped the other to make a simple 2 piece flat clamp type thing that I put the annealed blade in & file anything that has to be the same on both sides of the blade, i.e the ricasso & tang shoulders. To harden it & make it "file proof" I brought it up to critical (non magnetic) heat & quenched it in a solution called super quench. It's made up of water, salt, industrial strength soap (floor stripping strength)& Dawn dish liquid.
They're hard as all get out, files barely even scratch them.
I also use lock nuts to make sure the thing doesn't loosen up as I'm using it. Probably overkill here but I don't want to have to correct any filing or cutting boo - boo's at this stage of the process.
Simple stuff like that makes the work just a little easier.
Larry
-
Larry don't suppose ya can send a pic or two? But please only if and when you have time.<><
-
Sure thing Frank, but I'll have to take 'em first! :goldtooth: Gimme a day or two.
Larry
-
Frank, this is the one I made:
it's just two pieces of hardened scrap steel that slide on two pins. I clamp the whole thing in the vise and go to town. Larry's version is a much better DIY design. Another thing I find handy is to scribe a line on the edge of the blade so you have a reference as to how far to grind the bevels. Here's my cheap scribe - just a screw in scrap with the head sharpened a bit
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v212/fliksr/Knife%20build%20along/scribe.jpg)
Larry, I bought the new jig from Jantz. I'm not sure if it's on their website, but it's definitely in their print catalog... seems to be a lot more stuff in the catalog than on the site.
I hadn't heard that about Terry, but I haven't emailed him in about a year. That's a shame. His work really is top notch.
I don't mind the rubbing out unless it's a big blade. I switched over from buying the cheap paper at the local hardware store to the better stuff. It's amazing how much quicker decent paper cuts!
-
This is one of three knives that I'm going to swap. I did not make the blade. I mearly hafted it to the piece of antler. I did however make the sheath. It's all hand cut and sewn double stitched
with hand made cats eye glass beads from the Oneida Indian reservation.
-
heres one that shows a better pic of the blade
(http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y215/JOHN4Mystikbow/100_2370.jpg)
-
I'll post another one when I finish it up in a day or two
-
I decided to finish up the next one after I posted the first one. Here it is.
The same style sheath will go with this one too.
-
Man you guys are killin me , now lets see how many knives do I have to make get one of them stone knives ??? Drew gotta figure the odds :0)
-
I was kind of thinking the same thing Drew! ;)
I spent a few hours out in the shop today. I decided I'd rough out the rest of the blades on my to-do list instead of doing handles... it's easier to get some handle work in during the week than it is firing up the forge after dinner.
I did get this year's St Jude knife all heat treated
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v212/fliksr/More%20Knives/StJudeTeaser.jpg)
Heehee :bigsmyl:
-
Numero uno for me is done.... I might get around to doing two this year, but I still got to make a sheath for this one... inspired (errrr....copied the idea) from our own "Over & Under" I am going to call this one Idaho Mojo, and I hope whoever ends up with it has some luck. Cold Steel "bird and Trout, Idaho Mule Deer Antler and some scrap bocote I had around the shop.

Nice job!
I've gotten a couple of questions about the swap over the last few weeks, so here are a few reminders:
1. The "end date" is the end of July. At that point email me your address and if you made more than one knife. All names go into a hat and I'll send out who to send a knife to.
2. Everyone can play. Stone blades, bought blades, hand forged, reclaimed... the goal here was just to get people out doing something hunting related during the off season :)
3. I said it before, but just as a reminder, please post any and all pics ON THIS THREAD.
Oops, I forgot to give you my email addy (thanks for the reminder Doug): [email protected]

Here's a better pic, for perspective

:biglaugh: :biglaugh: ;)

-
Jake I think that is your best one yet. You've gotten real good brother.
-
Jake, it's not nice to tease people like that! Nice looking pig sticker btw!
-
Jeremy this whole thread is a tease to us without talent. Keep it up! lol
-
That's a beauty!!
-
hey thanks for teh compliments. David, i honestly feel I get better with every knife... Jeremy this was my first time using Tulipwood...it smells darn good when sanding.
-
That's good to hear! Frank (sticshooter) just sent me some tulipwood (Thanks Frank!) and I was trying to figure out what to put it on.
-
Man...see what happens when you duck out on the board for a while....man you guys making some great knives....
not sure if tis too late to get in on a swap...and not sure if I'll have any of these finished up.....
some that I been working on (couple utilities, skinners and a seax)....
PS...the bottom little caper is cable damascus...can't wait to etch it :)
-
Hickstick, Your not too late at all. Nice lookin blades there. The swap isn't gonna start untill
July. I gotta get crackin too. I haven't done anything else since I put together thoses two stone knives posted early on. I still have a steel blade or two to make. BTW, what is cable damascus?
-
thanks john...
Cable damascus is steel cable (wire rope) thats been forge-welded together to make one solid (hopefully) chunk of steel that you then forge out into something.
it comes up with a neat snake skin type pattern to it...like this one a friend made...
oops...edited to remove the pic...was a little too wide.... made it a like so I don't have to resize it cable damascus knife (http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c172/RandyS_/sanmaicable2.jpg)
-
Hickstick, that cable damascus knife pic, was awesome.........wow  :notworthy:
-
WOW! NOW THATS A GREAT KNIFE.<><
-
Well since it's not too late I'd like to jump in here also on the knife swap. All these knife threads awhile back reknidled the bug in me for along time to make knifes so I bugged the heck out of a local muzzleloader knife maker in to teaching me. I ain't the caliper of him but I'm really happy with my progress. Count me in!
-
Marc, Nice to see you back here with your blades. Your forge-a-long tutorial on blade blade making was a classic...Doc
-
OOH I like That! Thats a great looking pattern Marc. Man theres gonna be a ton of nice knives swaping hand come July.
JOHN
-
thanks Jeff. The blade in the link was done by a friend some of you may recall from the old LW days back before this site was born....his name is Randy Skidmore. Great bladesmith and great bowyer too.
been away from the forge (and from this site too)...torn my rotator cuff and labrum (cartilidge that makes the shoulder socket) playing ice hockey....trying to get it to mend without surgery...but unsure....
so I'm focusing on finishing these few (in the first pic) up and letting my shoulder rest for a while. picked up a bunch of 01 (oil hardening tool steel...great for knives) from a guy who bought the kit and kaboodle of a machine shop going outta business...lots of it smaller stuff so I'm gonna try my hand at some folders too...that should keep me from swingin a hammer for a while....heres a pic that might make some of you knife makers out there drool...all bought for a buck a pound :)
and another:
-
I never would have thought that I would get all giddy over a pic of just plain old steel.LOL. Prayers for your shoulder.<><
-
Aw Heck, it's just some scrap iron. We gotta free dump here in Carlisle if that stuff is getting in your way ;)
My forge gets a little lonely. We should done a dueling forge marathon some time...Doc
-
will do jeff....nothing like flingin a few arrows waiting for the steel to heat too :)
thanks sticshooter (for the prayers). got a cortizone injection a little over a week ago and its feeling much better (until it subluxes again (slight dislocation)...but the pain only lasts for a few seconds.....more of a hassle than anything right now...)
hey...if any beginners want to try there hand a forging a knife for the swap...shoot me a pm...as you can see, I got plenty of 01 to spare.... :)
-
I'll take about 25# of 01...Ahhhh it's for my next door neighbor who wants to learn forging :) Doc
-
Just started making a handle for a Russell Green River blade today. Should be done in a couple days. Will post some pics when I get it finished. Have also started a blade from a file. It will be my first one and I hope I can figure out the correct heat treating process so that it will be worth something when finished. If it turns out I will have 2 and possibly 3 for the swap. Have a good day and keep 'em in the middle, TMG.
-
Sounds great TMG! Can't wait for the pics.
I still can't get over that pile of steel....
-
Hey all
I also make my own knives where do I sign up I'll post a picture of them later. :goldtooth:
-
007 - ya just did! This will run through the end of next month and then everyone needs to email me their information. After that I'm hoping there'll be tons of pix on this thread.

JOHN
-
Very nice looking knife Lee!
-
cool Lee, very nice:0)
-
Count me in for one. I have a pretty decent obsidian blade that I made a few months ago.I hope I can do justice it with a nice handle. My stuff usually looks very primitive.I will be hafting with homemade pine pitch and artificial sinew.
I don't know if I'll have time to come up with any more knives before July as I have a busy calendar for the rest of this month.
-
I have one knife made up and may be able to get another 2 or 3 done. Blades were already made,I just never got around to making handles.
-
Thanks everyone.
-
I was able to get 3 made up today.Top two are obsidian and the bottom is novaculite.

I gotta friend that gets me some pieces of tool steel from time to time. Any way...they are very functional little skinning / caping blades. They make great neck knives !

C'mon guys there is a hande full of ya's that we haven't heard from in awhile. LETS GET THIS PARTY STARTED!!
-
I am a little worried I will embarrass myself when this is all over. My skills are anywhere near some of you guys...Doug- Simply beautiful, and Jeremy, very impressive. I will be swaping a small neck knife I made and a custom knife made from a file and some african antler ( i did not make this one, but do have another from the same knife maker and he did a fine job on both.)
Jake
-
I updated the list. Now there's 39 knives!!

It's getting close now.<><

Somebody's gotta stay in camp & do the cookin' :D Here's mine...Doc

Wow , man some of you guys sure do have tallent , can't see how a body could go wrong with any draw in this lot :0) Drew
-
What is the next step? Wait till we get the info and mail out the blade?
This rocks - I hope we do it again because I want to upgrade my skills seeing some of the great knives available?
Bob Urban
-
I've got all 3 of mine packed, ready to mail. One is ATS-34 and the other two are 1095 steel. Handles include osage, oak, and the one w/ the brass bolster is cocobola. All have 1/8 pins--two have brass and the other is steel. They are heat treated, quenched, and tempered. Larry
-
OK guys,
I'll be drawing names either tonight or tomorrow and then send out two emails to each of you. The first will the master list of who each of you will send your knives to and will be sent via a distribution list. Depending on your mail browser it may be filed under "junk" or "spam" so check those folders.
The second will be an email to each of you with the addresses and contact info for the guys you'll be sending your knives to. I'm not missing any info from anyone, so this shouldn't be a problem. If you don't have two emails from me by the end of the weekend give me a shout (or give me a break, b/c I should have a new baby by then ;) )
It's my hope that we'll do this once a year, just like we do the arrow swap and wingbone/turkeycall swap etc. So if you want to get started on next year's, feel free to and know that I plan on starting after the hunting seasons are over.
OH, and as a reminder if you're posting pictures (and I hope you do) please post them in this thread so we don't end up with 30+ knife threads on a hunting forum!
-
This is Awesome!!!!!!!!!! I will definatly be in for next year!!!
Way to go everybody!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for your work Jeremy!!!
jake
-
Jeremy - Congrats on the soon to be baby!!
I will be patient with that as an escuse -

Here's an update from last night's picture.....

Very nice Rob:0)
-
OK, everyone should have the first email! I'll start sending the individual emails after dinner.
-
Wow Jeremy! You got the short end of the stick on this deal. You put back Doug and drew me instead? It is a cool knife, but, it is a cheatr none the less. I admire your honesty, Sir.
-
Yeoowzer.. Rob those are a couple of sweet lookin

E-Mail received.
Gee.
Thanks Jeremy!! :scared: :scared: :scared:
-
Jeremy, First off let me say congrats on your new baby. Second, thanks for putting this thing together. You've done a first rate job! :clapper:
Third, I sent you a PM.
JOHN
-
OK, everyone should have all the addresses now... It's amazing what you can get done when your wife goes to take a nap.
Rob, it ain't that bad! Take it like a man ;) The knives look great, but pace yourself brother! 7 knives in a day!
Kenny, I just couldn't get that knife - wouldn't have seemed right. Besides, I've been hinting to my wife and father about Doug's knives for a year now... maybe they'll finally catch on in time for my birthday!
Now it's time to just sit back and watch as the pictures get posted :)
Thanks to everyone who put a knife in this time around! And if for some reason (timing, my fault, etc) someone wasn't included in this who wanted to be, don't worry, we'll be doing this again next year, so you'll have time to make more! I'll probably start it up again right after the major hunting seasons are over.

Nah, not bothered at all! :D Doug's already hd one of mine, made a while back. My QC is far better than it was back then! Thank mate, 7 in a day ain't that unusual, a man's gotta make a living! (Maybe I ought to hike my prices a bit.... :D ) Tim Roberts keeps on selling these armguards of his & somebody's gotta make the knives for 'em!
-
Thanks to all that took part in this great swap. Thanks Jeremy for all your hard work :0) Since I have five knives going out and couldn't decide how to pick for whom they would go I had my wife put names on them at random as she knows none of the people involved :0) I hope ya'll like them thanks Drew
-
Drew, Looks like you will be getting a knapped knife.I was glad to see that on an earlier post that you were hoping for one. :bigsmyl:

Thank you - It is a Green River style w/ osage. Flexible Carbon Blade and Coat hanger Pins.
A bit more primative than some of the great knife makers ar producing on here but a very functional blade. I have filleted fish and butchered deer with it.
I really hope you enjoy it RobTattoo
Bob Urban

Just mailed knives to sticshooter, robatoo, and drewsbow. Had to fill out a customs thingy for Rob. Jeremy, thanks for running this swap and for being so honest about Doug's knife. Good luck w/ your new baby. I hope he/she sleeps well at night--some do, some don't. My wife breast fed the kids so I didn't have to get up either way-- Thanks again.
Bobby-- I like your kn
ife--functional and a using knife as opposed to a display or too-pretty-to-use knife. Larry

Spent all day today, sheathmaking. Here's my last two pics before they're all mailed off to y'all.

Well, it was bound to happen. It seems I forgot BearPaw in the swap! He sent me a PM saying he wanted in the week before the swap, but I never got an email with his address and the PM was below the radar when I put together the final list...
I know there's bound to be someone else who I missed or has another one ready, so keep BearPaw in mind.
I'll be out of touch for a few days starting tomorrow, but keep the pix coming! :scared: :knothead: :bigsmyl:

Keep up the good work......looks like some others got a great knife from ya also!
It would interesting to know the history behind the materials for all these knives.
Where'd the antler come from...was the osage on a family farm.....where the blades were from...etc...

Thanks again for the compliments guys :0) I'm glad everyone likes their knives , can't wait to do it again next year.
Stobber , I get my antler from a deer processor in my area , I make him knives in trade. The bone on Larry's knife came from the woods I hunted turkey in this spring. Drew
