If you're drawing it to 45#, it's perfectly fine for whitetails, with the usual disclaimers:  very sharp broadheads and properly tuned arrows so that they're flying straight.  Many elk have been killed with bows in the mid-40's range.

Too light? No way Schnitzy. I hunted with 45#'s for years. Good sharp broadhead and decently heavy weight arrows are all you need.
It's not about how much weight you can shoot. It's how much weight you can shoot accurately.
Have fun!

45# will do the deed quite well so long as you do your part.

I hunt whitetail, turkey and small game with a 45# recurve. I used 125 grain b'heads on 2117 shafts, in the past, but also mess around with woodies as well.

IMHO the biggest factors to successful hunting are:

Be still.  You'd be surprised at how close an animal will get to you if you are patient.  Getting busted because the wind changed direction happens, but that's part of the fun.

Accuracy.  You need to be able to hit the spot.  With my set up, I am confident that out to 20 yards, I will hit what I'm pointing at.  I practise longer shots (up to 100 yards) for fun.  But every shot I've taken in a hunting situation has been 20 yards or less.

Took my deer this year using a 40#@28 62" J D Berry longbow, it was the third deer I have taken with this bow. So 45#, oh yea plenty. I use this bow becuase I'm able to draw it back smoothly, hold, and hit the spot. Meat in the freezer.

45lbs is a pretty wimpy bow.Your arrows will probably bounce off the side of a deer.I hunt with man weight bows myself.I shoot 46lb bows so no one calls mine a girly bow.  :bigsmyl:  I like arrows in the 450 to 500gn weight range and shoot Simmons broadheads. No problems as far as I can hit them.

How Long is your draw? If the bow is 45 at 28 and you draw 27 or more you should have no problems with a 10grn. or more per lb arrow.

I am shooting a 47#er now. Ain't killed anything with it and am still tuning it but it sure is fun to shot.
I think 40# and up is enough for most whitetails. Just look at a few copies of TBM they have women and kids all the time in there killing stuff with that weight and alot shorter draw lengths.
BERRY LONGBOWS RULE!! My favorite bow up until recently was a used LH PIT Viper I bought second hand. But it's developed a crack down the back of the riser and I'm afraid to shot it now. But it was great while it lasted. Really love the nocks and the way it drawed.

Hey I hunted with a 45lb recurve last year.  I used a CX150 arrow, total weight 480 grains. I killed deer with the following heads.

Muzzy 3 blade 125gr
Muzzy 4 blade 125gr
Wasp Hammer 3 blade 125gr
Stinger 2 blade 125gr
Stinger 4 blade 125gr

I killed 10 deer in, I poked holes in both sides except 4 deer. Of those four - 3 were lodged in the opposite shoulder, and 1 in the spine.

The shots ranged from 3 yards out to 29 yards and everything in between.

And all the heads flew just fine.

45# @ 29" ACS my wife lets me hunt with.
Yep, it's her girlie bow.
But it shoots some 30 1/4" 2018s with 125 gr. broadhead just right.

MY, MACHO bow is about 49#s

The 400s should be way stiff out of that bow with 125 grain head, even the 500 you should need 225 grain point weight for good flight. 45#s will do good on most anything we hunt in North America as long as ya shot'em 20 and under and use around 10gpp. with a sharp head. Shawn

I have had good luck with taking whitetails with bows in the 45# range.  Five of the last six I have tagged also had exit holes.  These were taken using a 46# takedown longbow.  At my draw length, I probably only pull about 42#.  These were all shot with 1816 aluminums and using 90 grain First Cut 2 blade broadheads.  These are some pretty good little broadheads in my opinion.

Any experiences here with a 45# bow and Elk?

I have shot 4 elk with a 50# recurve but it's old and shoots slower than most of todays 45# bows. It shot a 590gr. arrow at 155 fps when I checked it but that combination has put BHs all the way through my elk. All of my shots have been between 25 and 40 yds. (I didn't know it was that far until I stepped it off :^). The key for elk is: 2 blade cut-on-contact heads and (more importantly in my opinion), you need HEAVY arrows.  The heavier (that you can shoot accurately) the better.  I like 600 gr.+ for elk.  I know...that's 13 grains per pound with a 45# bow, but if you keep your shots close...closer than my crazy 40 yd shot, you don't really notice the weight difference and I know it will out penetrate a 350 gr. arrow going 300 fps, esp. if you hit a rib.  Hope this helps.

Great post. I have a "new to me" 49# Hoyt Pro Medalist Hunter recurve that I am going to try and kill a deer with this September. I've wanted/hunted/looked for a good condition PMH for over five years. This bow was made the year I was born (1967) and is in like new condition. At my draw I pull right at 45#. I have not shoot it outside yet due to nasty weather; but inside it seems to like a 27 1/2" 2018 with 175grn field point. Arrow total weight is 550 grains.
Man, did Earl Hoyt know how to make a bow !!!

Keep in mind, those Wards,Sears, ect bows are contract bows. They were built by established archery company's and the stores names were silk screened to them. Often, they will resemble a poular model in that company's line with minor changes. They shoot well.

I have a #47 1965 Kodiak that I'm making it a point to take deer with this year. I shoot 2016's out of it with 125gr steel force heads. May shoot 35/55's out of it also if I can quiet it down with those arrows.

It would hard to imagine just how many deer have fallen to a 45 pound bow.

It's not about the bow, it's about the shooter behind the string. Keep your heads sharp and arrows flying true. That bow will take care of business.

Here's my wife Laura and her two year  successes. The deer was shot with 43# and the arrow got two holes. The bear was 46# bow and was a pass thru.

Shot a 110# hog last year with a 45# longbow. The arrow went in behind the shoulder and the animal must have turned violently because the arrow point ended up between the back legs?????   Also had a pass through on a javelina.
