I got this from a friend and I don't know the people involved, but this is a pretty harrowing story. I got a big PDF file with pictures, but I don't know how I would post them. These guys were very fortunate that the guy who was mauled wasn't killed. The pictures of the bear were quite impressive. If anybody knows how or if we can post a PDF file, I would be happy to.
Ron, was attacked by a grizzly bear last weekend in Wyoming, while bow hunting elk with his dad.
Ron amazingly came through with non life threatening injuries.
Ron, who is an experienced hunter and used to be a guide, was calling an elk for his dad, who was down hill 40 yards. The elk suddenly spooked and then Ron heard a noise behind him. He turned around and a grizzly was 15 feet behind him. He tried to shoo it away but it proceeded toward him. He went behind a tree and the bear kept coming, so he took off on his 'death run' down hill towards his dad.
With the grizzly just feet behind his son, and running full speed, Ron's dad shot one arrow. Ron saw the arrow fly by his leg, unsure of whether it hit the bear, and within a few more steps, Ron was on his back with the grizzly on top of him. With is arms shielding his head, Ron kicked and punched the bear with all he had. Ron said it all went too fast and he was so full of adrenaline, he could not feel any pain at the time of the attack. When the bear continued to attack, Ron's dad, could see that the bear was bleeding badly from the arrow, and he went over and started beating on the bear with his bow(You can not carry guns during bow hunting, so he had nothing to shoot it). The bear continued to attack Ron, biting clear through his left hand and glove, and down to the bone of his right arm just below the elbow. Then the bear, stopped, looking at Ron's dad, walked away several yards, and rolled over dead.
The bear was autopsied and showed that it was well over 500 lbs(the grizzlies in that area average 350lbs) and 11 years old(which is in its prime). Following the path of the arrow, the autopsy showed that the arrow went in, hit a main artery, then bent, and hit the heart! A one in a thousand shot they said.
Another important fact to mention and that gave me chills is that Ron's dad had had surgery on his arm, because he had injured his arm and was not even able to pull the bow last season. This was to be his big hunt, and before the day of the attack, he had already missed two elk that were standing still. The morning of the attack, Ron's dad (also named Ron), prayed 'God please guide my arrow today'. Little did Ron Sr. and Ron know how God would guide his arrow that day!
These are the pictures of the bear and the area that everything took place in. Please enjoy at my expense. Ha ha.

WOW! A hunter's nightmare for sure.
A story of God and a fathers love, mixed with the human will to survive....Thanks for sharing.

That's awesome. God at work there...

Somebody was looking out for those fellas!!
That is crazy. Hence the new law that allows firearms now during the archery season.
News story from local newspaper: Father\\'s bow shot kills grizzly attacking his son (http://www.codyenterprise.com/articles/2008/09/22/news/news3.txt)
WOW!!!
CRAP!!!!! that makes me want to stay here in good old New Zealand :scared: (http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh305/jeffburg/runforhills.gif)
Thats quite a story. I am glad he was able to live to tell it. As far as not carrying a sidearm while hunting in griz country, "Better to be judged by tweleve than carried by six!"
They were "lucky" all the way around...
I'm as honest as they come,,,but... I would have a sidearm in Grizzly country. I would be happy to pay a fine instead of watching my Dad or son get killed.
JDS III
thats a miracle of a shot right there!!
What a story!! I'll do that one vicariously-thank you! :scared:
WOW!!!
Know that feeling...glad everyone is still alive and kicking.

Wow I can't believe all of the anti hunting garbage and comments posted below that article. I wonder if the tune of the people who posted those comments would be different if this was a story about a bear being shot by a game warden after a search for lost hikers found the bear feeding on its unfortunate victims.
Amazing story, I can't imagine the dismay of the father to watch such an incident unfold in front of his eyes. Truly a miracle that both of them escaped without serious injury.
Yikes!
The bottom part of that statement brought tears to my eye's. God is in Control.
"Wow I can believe all of the anti hunting garbage and comments posted below that article."
Ain't that the truth! There are even antihunting morons in Cody. The word "clueless" comes to mind.
Pilgrim are you sure you can skin griz?
AnointedArcher-thats funny!
So does the dad get to keep the bear? That is a trophy for the wall if there ever was one!!!!
I am shocked that the man who was mauled chose to run from the bear, especially given the fact that he was a guide who was probably familiar with griz and their habits.
(http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa285/Inhimwelive/news3.jpg) Hera ya go..
That's a helluva story. You would hope you would have the backbone to stand your ground and make the shot like the dad. Alot of people would probably react too slow. It's things like this that made me take a concealed weapons course so I can legally pack a sidearm if I feel the need.
What amazes me, is that in my book they did everything right, and look at the results. Things turned out great. I want to see the results of the person who played dead or stood their ground not making eye contact. My rule is and always has been, the bear may get me but it ain't no free lunch. This father and son are on my real men list.

I'm with ya on that, brother. That's another great example of a law that really needs to be disobeyed.
From the article:
"Trying to pull the trigger release string on his bow, Leming realized there was no time to shoot the bear himself, so he moved behind a tree and began running around it to buy time. Then he ran down hill, figuring he could move faster in that direction."
Perhaps the making of a trad hunter right there.

Why not tell the story about you and your buddy and guide being attackred by a grizzly? I think that a lot of people would like to hear the story.

I have *heard of* this story before but never been able to find it on the forums. I am new, and certainly would enjoy hearing the story in full
God's guidance on that arrow for sure. Them durn humpback bears can ruin a fellers day even without chomping on him. The areas I bowhunt seem to be infested with the buggers.
As to the feller running...ya do what ya do when them things are moving at you. He was going to get chewed on no matter what.
Bows are great hunting tools but not the best defensive tool, even with The Father guiding the arrow. I believe in the God given right to pack iron.
Out with the story Joe.
