I have recently been bitten by the traditional archery bug. I have been a compound hunter for about six years. Well I have recently purchased a modest starter bow in the form of a Martin Longbow. 50# @ 28"...I haven't pulled with a scale yet so this may be more or less...
I am not sure what kind of arrow I need to let out of this thing. I have a draw of 31" so I am estimating that the 50# @ 28" will be 59# or 60# at 31", right?
I am interested in arrow building and plan on getting into selfbows in the near future, but right now I would just like to sling a few arrows out of my new bow...Can any of you wise folks out there send me in the right direction?
I will be hunting with this bow as soon as I am proficient with it and would like to shoot 125 gr broadheads (I know I may have to change this) on a wood shaft with feathers...Thanks for your help!!!
31 inches is a long draw.Double check your draw length a few times and make sure you got it right.
Typically your bow would pull around 59#s at 31 inch draw if it gained 3 Pounds per inch.now if it stacks which is an inordinate amount of poundage gained per inch its gonna be more than 59.With a 31 inch draw its possible it would stack that last inch or 2.i have had bows that gained 6 or 7 pounds in 1 inch of draw when they hit the wall so to speak. You might go to a proshop and see if they have a scale and check the poundage.
If your draws 31 inches you will probably want a 32 inch arrow especially when shooting broadheads.i think a 2117 or 2216 or 2315 would get you inthe ballpark if you want to shoot aluminum.
I'm guessing you will loose some of your draw length with trad gear unless you have already varified that is what you pull.
Once you have your #'s down you will match you wood arrows to the pounds the bow is pulling.
Of course there are aluminum and carbon as stated above I think he gave you good advice for aluminum. Carbons I have found shoot vary well for me but its a personal thing. Have fun and good luck.
