Title: precision ground woodsmans
Post by: jonsimoneau on September 30, 2008, 11:48:00 PM
These things are the best thing since sliced bread.  It is easier than ever to get these things sharp.  My hats off to 3 rivers to making an excellent product even better.  Even a novice new to the sport should be able to get these sharp with just a simple file.

Hmmm...  I actually had the opposite impression.  I got some new ones and had to wonder if they were using a little harder steel in them.  Seemed like the old ones sharpened easier to me.

Either way, I still love em!

have they got the ground sorted out now so that there is not a low spot about 2/3 of the way up the blade?

Tradtusker, I know what your talking about. It takes a little work, but once done they are one of the best IMO. I sharpend my brothers and mine about 10 in little over an hour, all are razor sharp and ready to hunt with. I use the 10" file first than a stone. To start lay flat on file and give slight pressure and stroke once on each side. You should have metal shavings. The flat spots will be gone after a little work. Once done, touch ups are easy to keep them scary sharp.

I don't have a problem with harder steel in the head as long as the low spot is gone.  The last batch were the worst ground heads I've ever seen.  Had to remove lots of metal to get the blade sharpening properly.

the batch I received and sharpened 2 weeks ago were much easier than the older ones. I skipped the file and went straight to a coarse stone than a hard, then strop

I just got some of the new ones, 2 strokes with a file then on to a diamond stone. After I did two of them I realized the file wasn't needed. Much nicer than the previous ones.
