Title: Phonebook Penetration Test
Post by: khardrunner on September 29, 2008, 05:39:00 PM
So, how far into (or out of) a phone book will your arrow with sharpened broadhead penetrate?

This is by no means a scientific or official test, but I'm curious to see what everyone else does.
Here are the conditions I shot under...
- Newly sharpend Ace and Ribtek heads (160 grn)
- heavy, fairly well tuned arrow (730 grn total)
- 8-10 yrd shots
- Approx 50-55 lb R/D Longbow drawn to that weight
- 1.5 in standard Verizon phone book

I got a bit more than the tip through with the Ace. The Ribtek was barely poking through. Anyone?

I want to try the test. But first about how thick is your phone book? I have bell south and it is fairly thick. I want to make sure we are about the same in in thickness.

I watched a video years ago where he shot a .270 and then a wheelie bow into a bucket of sand... The bullet didn't pass through. The arrows did.

There is a man with a fun Idea I once tested trad bows in the 50 to 55lb range shooting through 3/4 " plywood I got good penatration with 2 blade and also 3 blade tryed a compound and got no better penatration than trad gear that was 15lbs less than the coumpound Think i will find a phone book and try it out      :archer:

My phone book was about 1.5 inches thick...and yes, I just canceled my verizon land line because thier service and billing in my area was terrible!

To be more specific, I had about 3/8 inches of broadhead sticking out of the back.

Give it a try...it's theraputic!

It all depends on which resturant you kill.

Sure makes it easy to decide where to eat!

FWIW....

Full house 44 magnum loads make it through about 5 & 1/2 editions of the yellow pages.

Gordon, Your compound must have been way underpowered. Most high end modern 60# compounds will still shoot a 600grn arrow around 250fps, no 60# trad bow on earth will shoot a 600grn arrow much over 190fps. Now tell me how that trad bow going atleast 50fps less will penetrate equal to the compound? I'm not buying it. By the way cinderblocks are a good test material for penetration, just make sure you shoot straight into it.

I wish I could hit a phone book from 10 yards!

mikecc.....I stood and watched three different compound shooters using a chronograph at the Pa. Bowhunter's Festival this year.  They were using 65 to 70 pound compound bows and 450 to 470 grain arrows.  They were averaging 245 to 257 fps.  Two of those bows were Matthews and one a Reflex.  They each shot six arrows and were very consistent...using releases.

Maybe it was arrow flight rather than a particular bow....maybe it was pilot error.  But I wouldn't call a man the "fibber" without knowing the facts.

Just like any bow draw length matters greatly with the compound as well.Unless you have a very long draw I doubt if you can get 250 from the fastest out there.Sure they do out perform any stickbow and useing the same arrow weight and broadhead should out penitrate them however.

Before I went trad I chronied my compound at 308 fps with a 5grn per # arrow and my 28" draw length.

I shot a land shark 165gr 2 blade 48@28 545 gr arrow total from 10 yds. about 1" out the other side. shot the same arrow and bow but with a 160gr Zwickey ESKIMO also 2 blade. went through the phone book 1 foot and stuck in the ground.I only have one zwickey it was old. anyway been shooting it man they shoot great. I just ordered a pack. Thanks for the test idea. Now lets see how much blood they can put on the ground.

I'm speaking from personal experience as I like wheely bows and trad bows. My Mathews Ovation set at 60# was shooting a 650grn grizzlystick alaskan at 241fps and I have 2 witnesses to back me up.

Can't speak to the heavier arrows, but my Mathews Drenalin with 29.5 draw length and 64# reliably on two different chronographs shot 450 grain arrows at 296 fps.  This bow is fast, but far from the fastest out there.

Shooting a 62# @29" Crooked Stic three piece takedown longbow shooting Goldtip 3555 shafts with 225(125 + 100 grain adapter) grain Wensel Woodsman broadheads I got pentration of the broadhead all the way out the back of a 4 inch thick paperback book I had soaked in water overnight. This book had thicker, tougher paper than a phonebook. I have also shot 260 grain Snuffers(160 + 100 adapter) into the same medium from the same bow and got penetration of 1/2 an inch out of the back. 260 grain Ace 2 blades got the same penetration as the Snuffers. 300 Grain Ribtek broadhead got same pentration in the same medium as the WW.

What an idea. I can shoot them up before taking them directly to the recycle bin.  Thanks.

mikecc....don't doubt your word, but a feller' can take three cronographs and get all kinds of different numbers.

Rangeball...at 5 grains per lb, you could get over 250 from a good recurve.   If you have to go that light, to get over 300 fps, the speed doesn't mean much.  By the way....250 isn't slow 8^).

Yep tried yesterday.

I tied up 3 local phonebooks for the test.

First I tried with the PLV 62#@29", I got through the first and into the second phonebook, 1053+367 pages.

Second test was with the Cheyenne also 62#@29. Here I got through the first and second, and into the third, 1053+386+27 pages.

Total arrow weight is 680 gr. hexshaft, tipped with a not scary sharp Magnus snuffer.

Great fun.
