Title: %$@%#@$#@!!!!! in Georgia, arrgggh!
Post by: Rick McGowan on September 29, 2008, 05:34:00 PM
I got drawn for the coveted gator tag in GA, got all the expensive gear together and then had to wait until I could get time away from work, which is this week, the season ends this weekend and NOW, I am stuck at home 150 miles from where I need to be and I can't buy any GASOLINE. I checked at lunchtime and the five stations nearest my house had none, I just went back and the one nearest my house must have got a delivery, because now there is a huge traffic jam around the place and no doubt some of them won't be getting gas. I am sure the police are there by now to clear the intersection. I really don't understand how this is going on, two and a half weeks after the hurricanes and now its getting worse? I wouldn't have minded to much back when I first moved here, I could have at least walked out my back door and hunted deer, but I'm surrounded in people now and I don't have enough gas to get ANYWHERE I can hunt, I just want to scream.

Yep I counted the stations this weekend that I passed. Out of 28 stations only one had gas and it had, no joke, about 120 cars lined up for gas. I just found gas about 15 miles from my house today, but they only allowed you 10 gallons.

We are filling up at the state line and coming back on fumes.  This is the first time that gas has ever been cheaper in FL than Ga that I can remember.  What the heck are y'al doing up there?

I don't know whats going on and nobody will give a straight answer, ten days ago, they said the problem would be over in 3-4 days, then when that was up they said a week, now that deadline has passed and they are saying TWO MORE WEEKS!, Alligator season will be long over by then and so will bow season in most places. I'll be out of state working again, assuming I can get enough gas to make it to the airport. This is the EIGHTEETH day of gas shortages around here, why does the rest of the country have plenty and falling prices? Does God not want me to hunt alligators? ARRRRGGGHHH!

I really dont get it. Gas here has been dropping everyday since the price gouging they did a couple days before and after the hurricane. 3.49-3.69 a gallon, depending on how close the stations are to interstate 40. I live just outside of Memphis

Yeah, I went to Arkansas this weekend to Fly fish and right when you go into Alabama its fine, on the way back I came in from Tennessee, it was fine until right when you crossed into GA. And you are right about the price. I just paid 4.19 a gallon today, when I was in Arkansas I saw it as low as 3.30 a gallon!!

What I dont understand is why nobody is reporting it. I havent seen it in any of the National news. I think being without gas for almost two weeks now is pretty big news.

Well they had a PYSCHIATRIST on TV in Atlanta today, because lots of people are about to or are in the process of snapping(me included). It is going to have major economic impact around here as this week a lot of people are not going to make it to work AND more importantly I CAN'T GET TO THE GATORS or anything else worthwhile, even if I could get into one of those stations limiting people to $10 or $20 worth of gas, that isn't worth the sitting in line in my truck. Biggie is right, they do have diesel here, but a lot of good that is doing me.

They said on the news it will be another 1-2 weeks to get things right in Georgia especially in the Atlanta Metro areas.

Doesn't make any sense at all.  Prices are dropping in MS.  I've been seeing $3.10/gallon in some places, $3.39 elsewhere.  Heck, seems we could send some 18-wheelers to GA, charge what you're paying there now and still make a profit.  Something's not right, but we'll probably never know what.  If I had any time off I'd fill some cans and head your way.  Hope you find a way to those gators.

we saw the same thing here in fl in 2004 during our record hurricaine year. diesel was always avalable and gas was no where.

I now own a diesel  :)

Ray's got a good idea.  Rent a truck, gas or diesel and have 'em deliver to your house full of fuel.  There's gas furter south in GA.

I did think about renting a diesel pickup, very hard to think about paying that rental fee when I have two perfectly good tow vehicles sitting in the drive. Still gibberish on the explanations, the Lt. Govenor was on the TV last night and when they asked him what the problem was, he just hesitated and said, "lets just hope its over soon"!

Terry Green nailed it I think. The lower sulpher levels required by Georgia in the gas.

This is an econimic game boys. A restructuring of Americans mindset. Look all around you. Lets create a false panic.

So People who bought overinflated houses that couldn't afford them are going to lose them, Oh well the houses havn't dissapeared.

A bank was closed by FDIC but hours after bought by a major institution. I am scared now.

Oh wait the govt. wants to print 700 billion dollars to pay itself back. Surprise surprise.

At least the bs they are giving you guys in GA is real they won't bring you any fuel. Why in states bordering you do they have fuel?

Look into our past this has all played out before. We just go in waves. Slightly askewed waves but still very similar.

We get complacent and "greedy" and this is what always happens. People tend to complain the rich get richer nowaday and so on but that has always been the case.

For me their was a major shift in wealth in my mind anyway when a house costs more than a Ferrari or what every luxury vehicle you desire.
When I was younger I was like damn that car cost as much as 3 houses lol.. Now it isn't hardly anything at least here in Kalifornia.

What is really going to be scary is if we do run out of oil. Our wholes existence is based on non renewable resources. I guess the selfbow guys will be OK. lol

This isn't some great conspiracy just standard political practice.

Stevo, I made my usually round of the half dozen stations within a few miles and only one had gas at $4.20 a gal and a massive traffic jam blocking the traffic in all directions, I was just sick and ready to give it up as a lost cause, so I went to the super market to get some food, since I wasn't going anywhere and was talking to the clerk about the situation when the old guy behind me volunteered that he had just filled up in a station that I had forgotten about and drove just a couple blocks away, so I went back up and they still had gas and no traffic jam(it was starting by the time I got out), I was going to leave right away, but I was just to stressed out and it was a bit late in the day, so I will get out tomorrow morning and should be on the water tomorrow evening, barring any further disasters, KNOCKING ON WOOD, I'll be back when I get a gator or the season is over(monday)!

And folks wonder why I have an 80 gallon aux tank mounted in the bed of my truck. Nice to have a 1500 mile cruising range.

Good luck Rick. Jay sent me a pic of Mrs. Karens gator. Gotta be fun chasing a big lizzard around in the dark.

There was a pipeline fire on the system that pumps gas from the refineries here on the Texas coast. Our gasoline ship dock in Texas City was damaged by hurricane Ike,so no shipments are going out until the repairs are done and we can get a Coast Guard inspection.Hopefully we'll have it up and running soon.

No gettin, either way. Very deprssing really. I did learn a bit though. The zone I applied for, because I assumed that I wouldn't get drawn has no lakes or impoundments, just ponds, creeks and a couple rivers. Since we are YEARS into a major drought and up until yesterday it hadn't rained at all in 25 days. This meant that the water was extremely low everywhere and I only found two places where I could get my boat into the water and it was no easy deal at either one of those. It was apparent that the rivers were out, they were so shallow and had so many exposed logs that it was nearly impossible to travel them in the daytime, let alone at night and the one trip I did take, I didn't see any gators at all and all of the creek entrances and marshy areas off the river were dry or impassible. The one lake I had high hopes for I saw nothing and then talked to a local and he said they went there at the beginning of the season and there had been about 20 gators in that lake. He also said he had lines out baited with whole chickens(set lines are illegal). All of the ponds are on private property and NOBODY wants big gators in their fishing or swimming ponds, I thought that might make it easy to find a place to help someone out, but apparently there are LOTS of volunteers, as everyone that I talked to for a while starting talking about all the gators they shot or at least left no doubt that they had no gators in their pond ANYMORE. I did finally get into one private pond the last night and the water was very low, but I did see about a dozen gators although they were mostly little. Several about three feet long that I could have caught by hand(I really wanted to, but I didn't want to make a commotion). One that may have been almost legal(48") and one I think was about five feet, which is still pretty small and even at that he was so spooky I doubt I could have got a shot, the only decent look I got at him was just his head, they have a way of floating with their head at the surface and their body hanging almost straight down into the dark water and they just backslide out of sight very quickly. I was pretty disappointed in the whole thing. If I do decide to apply again and wait the years to get enough points, I'll apply for a zone with large lakes or impoundments, I think they are less likely to be poached out and you could stay out there all night if necessary, the places I could go, after an hour or so I had seen everything there was to see.
