Joe and I are going to be hunting with our 70's Bear grizzlies this season, and with all the nice pics on the Bear bow thread, I was just wondering how many folks here will be hunting with these old beauties.
Me..............bowdoc
Ill be hunting with a black bear recurve. this will be my first season hunting with a traditional bow too.
Hi All,
Until two years ago I hunted with a Bear Kodiak Magnum (50# @28") that I bought new about 1972. This was the only bow I hunted with during this time period. My bow was damaged during a move, a gouge through the glass left to right on the back of the limb about six inches from the upper tip. Sadly, I retired it.
The bows we have available today are both works of art, and nearly indistructable. Our problem is "soooo many toys and soooooo little time to play!"
me too! Jim, go over to the Trad History /
Collecting forum and find tne vintage set ups for '08 thread there are some cool pics.
The only bow I have and shoot is a Bear Grizzly
They are all I hunt with. Grant
I will be hunting with either a 1959 or 1962 Bear Grizzly. I love those old bows. Ken
I hunt with a 70's Grizzly, 90's Kodiak and my favorite "go to bow" a 2001 B Handle t/d.
I've got a 1962 Grizzly and a 1962 Cub I plan on doing a little hunting with this year.
I'll spend the bulk of my season with Bowdoc's old 1960 Kodiak 60" 52#, a modified 4 arrow leathertop quiver and bear razorheads.
The bow will perform flawlessly if I do my part.

Mine will see a few days in the woods. To much mojo not to hunt with
Kodiak mag not sure what year 50#@28, cedar arrows, bear broad head. Best part is I will be hunting on my own property and out of a ground blind.Cant wait till morning. I cant remember when I was this excited about the first day of deer season.
My '65 Zebrawood Grizzly will be going afield w/ me on more than a few hunts, similarly set-up like Trap's with a 4 arrow leathertop quiver and vintage Bear arrows tipped with 1960 Bear Razorheads.

1970 grizzly, 56in 45#, I shoot it as well as anything custom. Mike
Nice set up Trap!
Mag A riser 52# #3 limbs. Modified 4 arrow quiver. AO 2018's with '64 Bear Razorheads up front.. I'll have one Bubblehead in the quiver just for mojo
1970s bear kodiak 52@28...once belonged to Sammy Hagar
1970 K-Mag 50#'s and 52 inches. Got this one a couple of weeks ago and in pristine condition! Brought back a lot of memories of the bows of my youth. Would be a shame not to hunt with it.
I'll be hunting with my '67 Grizzly that I killed my spikehorn with last year. It's LUCKY!!!!!
My 55 Kodiak gets more than a few trips afield each season. Shooting auction site vintage arrows with greenies.
I've been shooting my A magnesium riser with No. 2 53# limbs, think I'll use that.
I have a couple but I'm taking this one next Saturday when season opens. It's a 1972 Bear Mag (as in magnesium) Takedown. 60", B Riser.

I'll be hunting with a 70's bear grizzly
Jim, already got one down with my '68 Cub (my first with traditional gear). Probably gonna' get some field time with my "A" mag take-down that I picked up at Denton Hill as well.
Best of luck to you and Joe.
(George, I dig that "B" mag. One of those is next on my "list")

Was going out this morning here in MD but I would have ended up with a wet a$$(and everything else). When its real wet out do you guys worry about moisture entering stress cracks or any unseen openings. I'm hunting with a "64" Zebrawood Grizzly this year and I'm concerned about moisture getting in and swelling the wood. What do you guys use to coat your bows that is scent free. Alot of the waxes have a lingering odor.
Thanx, Shep

Dad owned an archery shop in the 50's and 60's. I went into the Marines in 67 and got back from Viet Nam in 69. Dad closed the store when I was gone but saved me a brand new Kodiak Hunter. Shot many deer with it and still hunt with to this day. Thanks Dad !!!
I use clear poly spray....it doesn't smell like humans 8^).
Congratulations Jim, that is a fine deer taken with an old Bear
well I was hell bent to hunt this evening so I wiped down the grizz with a very light coat of Vasoline then wiped it clean with a rag. Got in the tree about 5:05. Saw 9 deer, 1 good buck, 3 year and a 1/2 bucks and 4 does. Nothing was closer then 60 or so yds. but I dodged the rain and the world is one feral cat short. Big ol tom came sneaking thru just before dark. I didn't see him coming but the squirrels let me know he was there. A 15 yard neck poke ended his rabbit/quail eating days and no I'm not eating it.
I'll be hunting with a 1957 Kodiak Special. Love this old bow.

Trap that is a nice looking setup ;) The arrows are great by the way.......thank you  Craig :archer:
Thank You Craig, The shafts are some of Don Stokes' Light Hardwoods (supercedars).
Barrel tapered and fly like darts.
Trap
Trap,, Not to certain but i think I passed up a deal on the same bow about 3 or 4 years ago.. At that time WP had the bow and it was in need of a good cleaning..
Seeing it now, makes me want to hurt myself.
Ye Ken I dont know, I bought this one from a fella in Idaho. He got it in a trade he made with Bowdoc and said he'd had it for 8-9 years I believe. I'm sure we could ask Doc and he'd know for sure.
Bowdoc refinnished it at some point in the past and it looks like a new bow. The man's talents are amazing.
Sounds like maybe the one you had a chance at may still be out there. That's what keeps us scrounging around looking for them isnt it. ;)
Trap
Hey Trap, Could we get a better pic of how you attached the rubber straps to that quiver????? AWSOME Idea!!!!!
Everytime I see a thread on old Grizzlies I pine for my Grizzly I bought in '67. I'll use a '70 Kodiak Hunter this year though. This was my Grizzly, a yearling 5 pt in 1968 or 1969 can't remember but my first deer ever, my first bow kill ever. The deer wasn't that big but I had a big smile.

Great Northern straps and a couple of small brass bolts.
Trap
Great idea Trap,Thanks for the pictures!!!!!
I had a leather top quiver that I "donated" to the '56 K Special "Joan Leonard Memorial Bunny Hunt" bow. I wish I'd have seen this earlier,I'd have used the straps instead of electrical tape LOL
Ill be hunting with my 62 K-mag
What is considered a vintage Bear bow? I know the thread is old, but anyway....
I am using a Bear Grizzly that was bought in 1978 (not sure of the actual year made, I figure the year before or maybe that year). Looks brand new. No scratches or anything.
My partner and I will both be using '56 Kodiak's at 54# as usual! Dick
!970 Super Kodiak 50#
What is a vintage Bear bow?
The correct usage of the word "vintage" is when identifying the year when a wine was made.
Since the term has been hijacked and used for other items like Bear bows, it's rather meaningless and can pretty much be used the way anyone wishes.
Personally, I just refer to this as "Grayling Era" Bear bows or "Pre-Gainesville".
Now antique is another term often used and abused also, but I would not use this term unless referring to a really old, old, Bear bow that's best hung on a wall or displayed.
I guess your never too old to learn something, asked for or not.
When I hunt from a tree, I'll have my ( antique ) 50# Bear Kodiak Mag. When still hunting and stalking from the ground I'm going to try my ( new ) R/D long bow.
Good luck to all this year.
Ken
I will be hunting with a 76 Super k this year, it will be my first season hunting with trad gear. I will try to post a pic.
I will be using my 76 Bear Super Kodiak Grayling 55# pictured behind my quiver, that is full of original Bear Archery Faberglass arrows that 6 are tipped with razor heads and 6 with field points I know, people have told me not to use these arrows, BUT I still might as a tribute to Pappa Bear.
The other two Bears on the left is a Kodiak Hunter 35# and on the right a Kodiak Magnum 45#

I've got a 67 zebrawood tigercat 47@28, it will see some time in the woods this season, got a few old greenies to shoot as well. Todd
just refinished a kodiak mag 57#@28" don't know the year.finihed puting the strike plate on last night.today i am giving it to my cousin mike.he used to shoot a crossbow, but i got him interested in shooting my traditional bows.now he is hooked.he sold the crossbow.thank the lord!so today he gets his new to him kodiak mag.when i save some money,i make him his own dozen cedars.
I've used nothing but my longbows for the last 10 or 15 years, but this year im going to use my 1968 super Kodiak. To nice not to use :D
Sure that my '62 Grizzly will take a walk or two this fall. Have to figure a way to dull up those white limbs though.Be good to find some of those period limb covers, will be keeping the eyes open.
I will be using my '59 Kodiak again this year.
My 69 Grizzly will see some hunt time this year!
Great pic Doug.
I will be going afield with a Bear TD and some homemade wooden arrows tipped with Razorheads.
Good luck to all!!
58in 45# Griz here, I use it for my now daily practice to get the muscles back in shape. I really would love to paint the black faxed limbs camo, but can't make myself do it. And the stick on tape now looks terrible. I see Doug above has the old slip covers, might have to recon that instead.
I will be hunting with my 1960 Grizzly until my 1959 Kodiak Replica being built by Vintage Works gets done sometime this fall. Ken
I plan on brinin the 1954' Compass KII KODIAK 60" 56# er I picked up earlier this year with Original bow sleeve and paperwork. She is clean as as whistle & all Original.Looking forward to the Maiden Voyage with her.
It's a toss-up for me this year. Either my green stripe take down or my '68 Super Kodiak. At the moment my '64 Kodiak is a longshot but who knows?...I really enjoy all the old Bears and that '64 is a shooter.
grizzley all the way for me this year rabbit, phesant, pigs
Not final yet, but it is either this Grizzly 50x @28" or a Martin Savannah 55 @ 28".

I have a 1967 super kodiak that I hope to make meat with this year.
Sorry for my misuse of terms :D
I will be hunting with my bear Mag A Handle 52#lbs @ 28. I think the bow is as old if not older than I am. I can remember my dad hunting with one just like it when I was young.
I have two - 1967 58" Kodiak Hunters, both are 45#s @ 28. My draw is 29 1/4. Shooting 30" 2016 with 125 snuffers. No problems with pass throughs on Whitetails. Only use a 12 string femish and just got B55 strings from Josh Sowerby. Seems to be real good strings so far.
I recently picked up a 70's Grizzly (50#) primarily for bowfishing but if I can get it fixed up and tuned up I'm sure it will see some tree stand time this fall. It's a great old work horse.
I have an older Grizzly that is really fun to shoot, but I bought a Bear Super K last year. It's new, but I hunt with it pretty regularly.
